Adding to the invitro tek?
    #637990 - 05/20/02 04:28 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

In the invitro tek thing i read, you take this pvc pipe thats 2 inches diameter and 2 inches high. Well, you put this in between your cake and your lid, with 4 holes poked around this... now, why not epoxy that pvc pipe to the lid, cut a few breathing holes in the side of the pipe, and then fill the center with water+H202 and perlite?

from the document

http://www.mycotopia.net/discus/messages/5/7618.html?

Risers & Surface: The Risers we will be using to keep the cake from covering the holes will be 2" long pieces of PVC, cut from a 2" wide PVC pipe. The result will be a 2" long by 2" wide riser that will sit between the cake and the upside down lid of your mini terrarium. As well as keeping proper air flow throughout the jar, the riser will also be keeping the cake suspended from the water that will eventually pool inside the lid because of high humidity(you may also get some dripping from the top of your terrarium, but I have never seen any significant negative results from this). Do not worry if your PVC risers look as if they are covering your holes, the jagged edges from where you punched your holes will keep the riser from sitting flush on the lid and effectively blocking airflow (this is why I prefer nails over drilling for making holes). Having your jar lid sitting flush against a smooth shelf is equally as bad as having your cake sitting on the inside of the lid. Some sort of platform must be devised in order to allow airflow under your terrarium. You can get creative here, but as you can see from the picture below, the bottom part of a standard screen door works great when sitting on some horizontal 1/2" PVC pipe.

It seems like in this setup the jars are just like small terrariums, and is still called invitro. Doesn't the invitro "tek" consist of leaving a colonized cake in the jar and exposing it to light, not even birthing it into a larger jar? I was concerned that the mushrooms wouldn't have any space to grow in between the jar and the cake in the invitro tek I read..also there is virtually no C02 exchange; except from the 4 small holes poked in the jar lid for innocculation. Curious as to how this works am I.

I'm just theorizing. And yeah, i was wondering that to, but when i tought about how CO2 sinks, it would prolly naturally come out of the holes (at the bottom) and the displacement would bring in more air...
Then again, your supposed to put it on a rack...

I didn't underdstand the other invitrotek either, it just doesn't seem like there is enough room...

they can fruit right in the small jars, best to remove the verm. barrier at 100% colonization to give a bit more room for faster growth.
but it does work.
