Fuzzy Cakes and Tipsy Spores
    #1292384 - 02/09/03 05:10 AM (13 years, 9 months ago)

I have a couple of questions; one dealing with my PF cakes and the other with spore syringes.

1) I used the double-ended casing tek on 5 PF cakes on 2-3 (6 days ago) and have observed absolutely no pinning. However, the cakes changed from blue to white (as expected) and have become quite fuzzy... How likely is it that cobweb mold could form on already established, healthy cakes?

2) I stayed up all last night preparing quart jars using bird seed and I made a new spore syringe from a spore print to inoculate them. While doing so I failed to notice a small pool (<1cc) of rubbing alcohol had remained unevaporated at the bottom of my shot glass. Most of the spores I scraped into the glass ended up in alcohol. Should I assume it is no longer viable?

Like a fiend in a cloud
With howling woe,
After night I do croud
And with night will go;
I turn my back to the east,
From whence comforts have increas'd;
For light doth seize my brain
With frantic pain.

not very likely at all, in this isutation the only area I'd even be concerned about would be the casing and it is small enough that should the mycelium fall to cobweb (again, not bloody likely) some h202 would surely work and if that failed you could simply dump that layer and put on a new one! cakes are practically contam proof once fully colonized.

This is what I figured, but you know how minds like to play tricks on themselves... just because I'm paranoid, don't mean they're not after me.

Heh :tongue: Guess the rest of my birdseed will have to wait a couple days for another spore print. Thanks for the reply.
