What are some ways to get the absolute most mileage out of your PF cakes? Is dunking effective? Are straws? How much fruit can be expected from the average half-pint cake, and how much can that be increased with these types of techniques?

I would definately use a rehydration tek for good results. which one is up to you, ppl have different opinions as to which is best. I like dunking, havent tryed drilling a hole and using a straw yet. another thing that i do with every cake is double end caseing them. fill lid full of wet verm and set the cake on top, after flush flip it and case the top of the cake. good luck

One method is when mixing the BRF/Verm/Water in your jars, make an index-finger size "wormhole through the middle all the way to the bottom and then fill with dry vermiculite, Then inject 5-10 cc's of water in the middle. Now you have a core of vermiculite. Now pressure cook the jars as usual. Between flushes, inject the core with a 10 cc syringe or use the straw. There are many methods to rehydrate the cake, just use your imagination. Esta

I love the drill hole method and found it to have excellent results. I highly recommend it.

I have found that you don't really need to drill a hole. Just take the straw(I use a peice about 3" long) and gently push it into the cake. When it's about in the middle, give it a twist, and pull it out. A plug if the cake will come with it. Push that out with a chopstick or something, and put the straw back in the cake. The first day or two, it will leak water around the straw, but the cake will quickly heal up tight and won't leak any more. Also, if you were to pull the straw out, the hole will grow completely closed in a few days. Hope that helps.

WakingUpLate, what a great idea! much easier than a drill i would imagine. Now you keep the straw full of water at all times , correct? I wonder if dunking inbetween flushes would be overkill...
