These are taking their sweet ass time and then some. Could I case this or do I need to wait even more? Bottom left corner is where condensation dripped down and puddled. I soaked it up like a week ago and it’s still not filling in. Case with vermiculite or continue to wait? Tomorrow will be a month now lol

How does that wet corner look below the surface/ from the side? Nothing that causes concern?

At a month/ with that general coverage, I'd just go for it.

Any great ressource / tek to read abt semp to have an idea abt how to grow those?

Would you say before going with semp i should master shoebox / mono with cubes?
I ve yet to do a shoebox / mono bjt i ll try in 2 weeks to prep + inoc grain for first time.

It helps with everything to master it with cubes first. But it's not a sine qua non.

Subtrops work great from cakes, but most people go agar -> clean culture (these are too slow to fuck with so-so cultures) -> grain -> slightly under capacity coir. Wait for 100% colonization, case. They do well with a pure verm casing, so for the first run that might be your best bet.

After that you wait and wait and check and wait. When they start pinning, wait until the pinset has filled out a little, then spray them daily, or several times daily. They like it wet. Takes about four weeks from pins to harvest.

I did a little test with an excess jar of spawn and threw barely 1qt of spawn in around 10qts coir in a 47qt ez dial tub so the ratio is around 1:10. Looks like this after 24h of recovery and I'm genuinely impressed with how fast healthy semp mycelium grows and recovers.

The most room I've given my semps is 11L boxes, generally @ 1:3.
Been tempted by running bigger, thicker subs with higher ratios to see how it affects morphology though...
I feel like thick sub+ maximum air is where I'm aiming eventually, maybe still 11L boxes but phatter & dubbed from the getgo, or in a 32L tub in tub.
Lurking on shroomery when like, 66Q tubs were absolutely everywhere really skews stuff haha I used to think everyone aspired to that but I can fit 6-8 11L where I could only store a few proper bigguns. I like the form factor.

Furthermore, when you say 1:10 ratio, I wonder how that will affect the flush, I done 1:10 on Ochra once and it was probably my least weird/stressy Ochra grow, most cubes happy @ 1:7 but with semp, I just never tried messing with ratios since my first packed boxes.

Of course, you've got bigger water reservoir and less 'grain energy', should we predict less coverage but meatier fruits do you reckon? Or do you think it'll still try and pin like mad knowing how much water it has to play with?

That's something that is still something of a mystery to me, because somewhere I've dumped (cube) subs this year after 3 flushes, as early as feb, there are popcorn grains knockin about that still look like they have a lotta life. Perhaps the real test is to run a tub with a single colonised grain spawned into the middle...

:edit: for example, does the overall mycelial network measure its own dimensions (the farthest reach of a mature cord) then assess the most effective current rate it can break down the contained energy source before attenuating its functions accordingly?

Does anyone have any insight or pointers in this direction?
It's something I've never come across in reading or made any solid observations about and now I realise I have no fuckin idea what really goes on with just WHY myc chooses to eat & grow how it does.

: doubledit:  Having a look in 21st century guidebook to fungi now...chapter 4 "hyphal cell biology and growth on solid substrates" might be the place! :bongload:

Well I don’t have much experience as I just started growing semps late last year, but I treated them the same as cubes and they performed well.

14 l boxes, coir + a little verm only, 1:6 ratio but since my jars of spawn are smaller, the actual ratio is closer to 1:8 or maybe more.

The results were:










This was a bigger tub with 2 jars of spawn

Honestly I've got no clue what'll happen but I've been curious for a while so when I realized I had more jars than shoeboxes I took an old tote and turned it into an ez dial.

I have absolutely no idea how this will effect the grow but I'm eager to see how it works and thought "why not" since I've got plenty of stuff going so I don't need to succeed with this really:awesomenod:

Stay tuned for more random semp trials kids. I've got plenty of good bad ideas.

Aye, I seen when you were filling those tubs out, hearty amounts & there are nice presentations to many of the fruits for definite.
Did you ever close in on what it was causing the ruffleneck looking blowout on the stipes in picture 3, an overall bacterial reaction like in vert?

Without trying to anthro everything, my wants in fruiting:
1.)Get ANY fruits.
2.) get "happy" fruits.

Problem sometimes being, we could consider vast pinning as a response to bacteria or unknown unfavourable conditions like "OH fuck it's terrible in here! Let's fruit, sporulate and start elsewhere." but also as maybe "Wow, it's amazing here! Let's make the most of it by fruiting and sporulating!"

So when I think of "Happy fruits" I end up thinking of morphology, I think of a fruit who is able to maintain certain functional paramaters (perhaps cap size, overall ratio of cap to stipe, orientation, ease of spore drop etc) that happen to match up with what I find as being visually appealing (before we consider anything that is an aside to the fruits survival like alkaloid levels) and although I can make prolific semp tubs- I'm not sure I'd call all my tubs "happy".
Or at least, feel like I could be providing better for them.

So I'm definitely interested in closing in a little further, on non genetic causes of variation in appearance & presentation, less spawn, substrate contents/consistency. To that end, I've got some fresh spores germinating so be able to run some along with the clone trials and see what happens.

What do you count as performing well, biological efficiency? Time taken for overall grow?

Well I grabbed a 3 pack of 11ls today, I'm gonna double up the next substrate depths, keep persuing the HWFP avenue and try to see how I can get maximum FAE in my personal setup (closetspace grower)

I got advice that it was vert blowout, read that it can be caused by too much moisture, and hydrated my substrate less + gave them more air from the start. That prettty much fixed it, as I’ve been running the same clone culture I picked up from my first grow so it’s all the same genetics.

Initally I hydrated the sub to 2-4 drops coming out when squeezed, dialed that back to barely a single drop. And more FAE right from the start. I still got just a couple unraveling stems in my latest box but I think they will go away with less misting. Sometimes the fruits feel too soggy so maybe 1-2 mists per day is enough. At a certain point it feels like they can’t take any more moisture and will start to unravel and later disintegrate.

By performing well I mean both, this culture pins at about 3 weeks from spawn and by week 4 they form a full pinset, and they’re done almost a month later. From what I’ve seen that’s on the quicker side. And with BE it’s been pretty stable, about 500 g fresh first flush per shoebox with a single grain jar, 30-34 g dry. Maybe there’s more on the table but considering that this is the first clone I ever took, that’s good enough for now.

I made similar observation about misting, now I play it by ear between misting and often just pour some water onto one of the tubs short walls, let it down into the sub and gently roll the box around. Does good and doesn't leave the fruits exterior as wet, or so I think. I got more blowout looking ones when misting them like crazy.

And yeah, that's plenty good enough for now- you got a producer of a clone there.

The wife and I dove into a good dose of semps for the first time. Wow. Very different. We did a bit more than 1.6g each. We did them in just over 1/4g capsules. We did two caps, then another two, then one and one, all spaced out about 1/2 hour apart. We didn’t go to another galaxy like we did with Pan Cyan Peace River, and they were not as vibrant color wise, but we liked that we were able to close our eyes and drift off visually very focused to a song and then back into reality when the song was over. We would then pause the music after each song, talk about the song, and our visuals. We were experiencing the same visuals. A lot of blacks, grays, whites and blues. Very prismatic. A lot of eyes, elephants, gemstones, and a lot of morphing. In between each song was like an intermission. We would drink some water, stand up, eat a piece of chocolate or gummy bears, bathroom break.

We would then put on another song, lay down, close our eyes and re-immerse ourselves. We were very with it, as with the pans we were just melted into another dimension. A very different trip for sure. My wife did at one point drift off into another reality for a few songs, and her body temperature went up. She cooled down and was back to reality. We watched Pink Floyd’s movie The Wall, ate pizza and called it a night. We enjoyed the semps, but next time would start off with a gram each right from the get go for the come up and go from there. I think we liked the visuals and destination the pans took us too over the semps, but the clarity and much lighter body load of the semps as well as the ability to be a bit more present we did really like over the pans. My wife preferred the pans, and I’m undecided which I prefer. We both do agree both are amazing!
