Re: The Official Fan Filter Unit(ffu) thread of power [Re: Agar Wedge]

Hey, thanks for the warm welcome!

I’ll check out the welcome thread later and say hi—thanks for the link.

I read through the whole thread and noticed that everyone’s happy about the switch from SAB to FFU, talking about what a nightmare it was to work with SAB—the awkward position, limited space, not being able to scratch your butt, etc. I’m an old, sick fart, and for my own comfort, a laminar flow hood seems like a better solution to me, but thanks for the suggestions.

Hey, actually, it seems to be the other way around—ULPA filters are cheaper than HEPA filters, at least at my local distributor. I couldn't believe it either; take a look:

Hi, thanks for your reply.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any information on the distributor’s website about differences in lifespan, but I assume that since the pores in the ULPA filter are smaller, its lifespan will be shorter. I plan to use 60 ppi pre-filters to extend the lifespan of the main filter.

The only thing I’m really worried about right now is the increased noise caused by higher resistance in both the main filter and the pre-filter. The distributor lists the noise level of both units at 51 dB, but given the above, I’m not sure if I should trust that information. A long time ago, I worked in a cleanroom, and I remember that damn thing hanging over my head made an unbearable noise without earplugs.
From what I’ve read, the MAC10XL is the quietest unit on the market, so in the worst-case scenario, I’ll have to insulate it somehow with acoustic foam.

I think the best solution for me will be to skip the SAB stage and start with a laminar flow hood. I’m sure I want to pursue this; a laminar flow hood will also help me develop my other interests.

Yeah they have compiled all HEPA, but does it matter?

A HEPA 14 is 99.995% at 0,3μm
A ULPA is 99.999% at 0,12μm

The lifespan of HEPA is 8-10 years
The lifespan of ULPA is 5-8 years

So what I am asking, besides the fact that ULPA often is more expensive and don't have the same lifespan, is there other disadvantages, like will it reduce the lifespan of the fan as well? Would it restrict air so much that an cheap China FFU can't provide enough air ect?

I mean clearly, when it comes to clean air the ULPA seems superior, but I don't know shit about air filtration other then that I can grow drugs in them so that is why I am asking :muppet:

I am probably the exception to the rule but I used a SAB for years and its my belief that gave me a solid grounding in skills that I would not have achieved with a flow hood off the bat. Unless your trying to stack pounds you don't need a flowhood. If you are trying to stack pounds prepare for a steep learning curve. My coolest projects were all done with the SAB. Good luck

Hi all! I am looking into buying my first FFU coming from a sweaty SAB and deciding on 2x2 vs 2x4 units on a table blowing in my face style. I will be doing 3lb-6lb spawn bags and G2G, with plate pouring and transfers, LC Innoculations ect.

I have heard it’s possible to stack two 2x2 side by side in an array. Has anybody here tried that out? Is the center between the units a no go zone or would that provide a true 2x4 workspace?

It seems like a good idea to start with a 2x2 and if I need more room to get a second identical one and aluminum foil tape between the gaps and maybe screw a bracket on to anchor them together. What do you guys think?

Yes you can make an array of FFUs. Yes you will have a small turbulent area where they meet, but only very close to the filter face. As you move away from the filters the airflow will be fine. You don’t need to tape them together or anything, just put them next to each other.

Amazon has FFUs right now for as cheap as I've seen them in a while. Almost $200 less than it was a year and a half ago.

I was just checking Facebook Marketplace and eBay to see what the options were in came across that one.

I always work by myself so there is no reason why I need 8 ft of Clean Air space. But damn do I want it. That thing is sexy as hell

Yeah I totally understand that you didn't even consider getting that monster, I just though the internet telling you that you were poor was funny.

Mine is 2x4 and its really nice having room to do the work :awesomenod:

I do.  I bought one from that company a few years back for $350.  It has worked great for me so far.  I do still dream of a 3x4 fh/ffu, but the 2x2 works well enough.

It was a long wait (years) but eventually lightning struck (and then I almost lost it bc I was a dick to the guy, still feel bad about that to this day, one of my core "wince with regret as you fall asleep" memories). Many hours of night driving across the mountains and a lot of reassembly and repair, but it can happen. This was a bit before the proliferation of cheap FFUs, back when even a DIY 2x2 was probably gonna start around 750. Honestly I sometimes wish I'd waited just a bit longer, it's so much heavier and space-taking than the modern versions. The thought of moving back to the city and having to break down and haul that thing again... oof. Kloakk's type has the same legroom without being a 700lb floor-to-ceiling space hog.

If you do get one, I recommend at least 2x2 if you can swing it. I don't use the full 4ft ever (all the pics of my hood have random crap piling up at the edges, just like a desk). The ideal size IMO is 1.5x3 but nobody sells that.

For height, about 4 fists (1/2 stack 90mm or full stack 60mm + media bottle at pouring angle). Same thing for width, bottle + stack, space to shuffle it and pour another.

With 2x2 FFUs in the $300 range, if you're gonna spend $150 on a lil guy, it's really worth pullin a couple doubles or doin some handyman favors to close the gap. If I wanted to feel cramped and fight with a box I'd have stayed in the SAB.

(edit: bloodssonnew just saw yours and hell yeah, 2x2 ftw)

Can't recommend it enough though. Yes the SAB builds good fundamentals, but I have a complex about trappedness, so SAB also builds seething psychological resentment that make me never wanna do agar.

BTW kloakk that black shelf thing with the light is classy af. and with the wood? lovely.

This is the one I'm thinking of getting:

Should I get a fan controller as well? It looks like the unit only has 3 settings itself.

That seems expensive for the size. You should be able to get that for at least a hundred bucks cheaper.
