Ain't that the truth. I can fit 4 monotubs worth of bags in my presto cooker.
1 jar can colonise 4 bags in under 2 weeks. It's like a cheat code.

Hi folks. Would appreciate your expert insights. I found the following FFU on eBay (I’m in Canada). It’s quite a decent price for what we can get over here (the yjingrui ffu goes for 666 cad) and the specs they’ve provided seem to match the requirements, though couldn’t care less for the frame. Anyone familiar with the manufacturer intbuying?

Looks like the same unit as the yjingrui. I suspect that they are all manufactured in the same place in china. Then resellers buy in bulk, slap on some labels and maybe a few light mods. Nothing wrong with that if you can get decent customer service if you have any issues, ime. The filters break easily in shipping, so that is where customer service may be important.

Check out their reviews and it they look solid, probably worth trying.

Thanks for the advice. I checked it out some more and since this is a horizontal unit it doesn’t have any clasps to use it vertically. Not a fan of having to Macguiver aluminum strapping on this unit, so will go with something like the yjingrui.

Thank you mushboy & everyone else that has contributed to this thread.

I read the entire thing & decided to grab the yjingrui.

It arrived in excellent condition. Passed the simple lighter/incense tests & no visible signs of damage on the filter so I taped a 16"x16" merv 8 pre-filter to the back did a few agar runs with it.

So far so good. :awesome:

I am back at it again after a 2 year break from the hobby & I'm looking forward to working with some exotics for the first time.

Just put subtropicalis, tampanensis, & ochraceocentrata to agar this morning.

I swear the nocbox SAB I was using came pre-contaminated from the factory.  I got the 22x22 FFU mentioned so many times in this thread and found my yellow brick road.  Built myself a Corsi-Rosenthal Box as well because, fuck yeah.

Flexible SAB's hardly ever work out. You can just buy an air purifier for less than it costs to build a Corsi-Rosenthal Box.

Or you can just run your ffu, which is just a big square air purifier when you think about it.

hello everyone. I had to ditch my last FFU (long story) but I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on a replacement when im able to afford it? I just finally got some work so im going to start saving for one and curious what kind of price range im looking at. I got my last one for around $600 and it was great, but im really hoping to find one for less. Would also be curious about buying used if anyone is trying to sell theirs.

What do yall think of this one?

And how is it different from this one?

https://www.amazon.com/HEPA-Filter-22-6x22-6-Cleanliness-Mycology-Mushroom/dp/B07YY637PV?crid=2GQA3LHZ2D4TV&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.LhKyppFFmFLonoPcDsuGmg.7lVNVhER2BIXJKTmKuTKXhAbaOFPMXZJKUjBkxD1VMc&dib_tag=se&keywords=YJINGRUI+filter+fan+unit&qid=1772934652&s=industrial&sprefix=yjingrui+filter+fan+u%2Cindustrial%2C267&sr=1-2

Theyre $300 different, but both made by the same supplier and look to be essentially the same product. what am I missing?

They do seem to be the same product. The cheaper one is shipped from Amazon.

My guess is they sent a bunch to Amazon for fulfillment and they're also shipping some directly (maybe intended mostly for non-US customers?). The cheaper (shipped by Amazon) one has more recent (and more positive) reviews. I think they improved their packaging and quality a lot since 2022.

Hi everyone, this is my first post on the forum, but I’ve been reading it for over two decades. I’ve always wanted to get into mushroom cultivation, but until recently I didn’t have the time to take it seriously. I still have a few things to sort out before I can comfortably settle into new life situation, but it’s only a matter of a few months, so I decided to start gathering the necessary equipment.

While I don’t have much trouble understanding most of the topics discussed here, the issue of laminar flow hoods is a bit overwhelming for me.

I found a local retailer in my area that offers the Mac10XL units and spare parts; the price is astronomical, but considering that I’ll only be buying this piece of equipment once, I decided to make sure I’m getting the best I can, and that’s where my confidence wavered a bit when I started reading about the differences between HEPA and ULPA filters.

While doing research, I’ve come across a lot of conflicting information about which of the above filters is best suited for mushroom cultivation. On the one hand, most hobbyists seem to use HEPA filters successfully; on the other hand, ULPA filters are recommended for microbiological research. I’m a bit confused about this because I plan to use the FFU for tissue culture experiments with cacti, cannabis, and maybe salvia in the near future, and despite my limited knowledge, I know that the sterility of my workspace depends on this component.

My local seller offers:
Ultra Low Penetration Air (ULPA) Filter: 99.9995% efficient @ 0.12 micron (U15 - meets ISO Classes 4-5)
and
High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) Filter: 99.99% efficient @ 0.3 microns (H13 - meets ISO Class 6)

The ULPA is even about 15% cheaper.

Could someone who knows more about this please explain to me which one to choose and why? I’m having trouble understanding the advantages of HEPA over ULPA for the applications I described. Is it about durability, noise level, or are there other reasons to buy HEPA instead of ULPA?

Thank you

max

Welcome to the Shroomery!:cool::mushroom2:

Cost considered you may want to start with a still air box. At least until you are sure this hobby is something you want to do long term. I thought I needed a flow hood at first too, started with a SAB and never looked back. Still got clean spawn and more mushrooms than I could ever eat

you want hepa. can the uepa work? yah it can but remember how the decimal points work. those .xxx5 is a compounding amount that WILL allow contams to flow thru.

hepa at 99.99 is what you want when you are spending the money. otherwise you are loosing money on a half assed measure.

ULPA is better at filtration than HEPA (check where that decimal place is - that's a factor of 100, and for smaller particle size too).

If they both do laminar flow and are similarly priced, I don't know why you'd want HEPA over ULPA. Maybe ULPA filters don't last as long. Does the supplier have any info on that? Either way, a pre-filter will help extend the life of the front filter.

But yeah, depending on what you're doing, a still air box will be a hell of a lot more cost effective. Certainly worth starting with if only to make sure you enjoy the hobby before sinking a lot of money into it.

ULPA seems to be a safer option, why are we not using them besides cost? Does the fan take a hit? Are the China FFU's to weak? Are there bigger chance of leaks?

I would like to know more as well :strokebeard:
