I have never sterilized sawdust personally, 1 or 2 days for chips.

It ain't much, but it worked!  A solitary azzie from the moss and wood shaving hanging basket.

If you ever want a project to finally fruit, just give up on it and don't look at it for a month

Getting prepped for Spring, probably a little early. Making patch seeds for my first attempt at Xgriseocaerulea. Niveotropicalis did really well here last year. Fed that patch over the holidays with some fresh chips and staked out a spot near it for these guys. Substrate is sterilized well-soaked arborist wood chips and HWFP. Used about a half qt well colonized grain per bag.

I'd like to try some other warm weather woodlovers. The Subaeruginosa swab I have seems to contaminate badly every time I try to cut a piece off and use it.

Moving the pots so I can bury some colonized woodchips underneath. Look at how the mycelium is seeping through the pots into the ground. Included a before and after pic

I made a thread on Ps serbica, the spores Bra sent germinated and in some time I'll have wedges to give away. For everyone who's serious about growing them out, check it. Didn't want to do it in the marketplace as they'd probably end up in some cabinet. Now is the time. In a few months prime outdoor bed building time is upon us.

I'll be following that thread too and would love a wedgie once the plates grow out.

Anyways, the ps cyan mycelium is jumping alright to the pine wood debrie I collected from the woods but there is one problem. IT'S FULL OF BUGS LOL. The wood was soaked for 3 weeks so I guess they either got into the wood when I was drying it out under the sun or something got mixed in. I'm putting the bag outside for observation lmfao.

It's probably bugs that laid their eggs in the water during fermenting. I've had that happen before.

Yeah, just go the extra mile and sterilize your substrate! Fermentation doesnt work for me. I've had bug contam, other fungus contam, and all it is used for is wasting your time and your spawn. I find it funny asf ppl will vouch for full fermentation over just taking 20-30 minutes to sterilize your spawn after like your gas or electric is gonna put you out of house and home if you sterilize the chips after youve been fermenting for 2 days to two weeks; not to mention spawn(that costs energy to make) that has been colonizing for a month or longer.

You can go ahead and only ferment your woodchips/sawdust but there's no doubt in my mind the mycelium will not be nearly as strong as if you sterilized your substrate after fermention. Not sure what the deal is with people's advocation for it so much. Like, if you know how to make spawn and agar, why in the world would you not take your substrate through some type of sterilization/pasturization process. There's no "sweet spot" for pasturization, it seems to fail no matter what. Ive tried it about a dozen times, listened and implemented advice on it, and still found the very best way to get the best growth is to sterilize your substrate after fermentation. I am not hating on anyone's hustle. If it works, great. I think people are trying to protect their customers from feeling overwhelmed about growing WL's, by just presenting a simple Stamets tek. In my experience, all that will do is waste your time and your spawn.
All you really gotta do is fill a colander full of fermented substrate and dip that in a big pot of boiling water for 30 minutes. Let cool and get to feild capacity preferably in front of the flow hood, and from there pack in tubs or, you can pack in jars and sterilize for 2.5-4 hours.

What would be the point of fermenting if you are going to sterilize anyway? I don’t get it.

I'm sorry but that doesn't add up. If I sterilize chips, it's in jars for 1 - 1.5 hrs at 16-17 PSI. But for larger volumes, pasteurization works great, fermenting works great, just plain chips are a bit of a gamble, but they work. Fermenting chips, then canning them for four hours is crazy overkill.

Woodlovers aren't overwhelming; they don't require long consolidation times (edit: in the spawn phase oc), vulnerable N-rich subs, high temps = more trich, casings... Also, I don't think the people roaming this thread have 'customers', we send out prints for free and expect nothing, at most a trade for other free prints, in return.

Once you get your process running, you'll see there isn't much to it. Compare these species to tropical pans and you'll find they are really the next step after cubes, and very forgiving.

People are getting really good results with fermentation only.  I like a quick boil, a long dry and average sterilization times for working with small batches.  If I was doing bulk then it would be fermentation only.

I have asked you several times to show us one of your successful woodlover grows, and you have ignored that request every time.

I went through your entire post history and didn't find a single woodlover fruit.

I don't think you've grown any, especially given your rambling grow advice.

Show your work.

That is truly silly. I really can't even be bothered to entertain that attack since it wasn't even about how many woodlovers I've fruited out, I have in spawn, or have in bulk substrate. All I'm trying to do is suggest something that can improve all yalls grows, after someone literally just posted about, wuttaya-know, contaminated fermentation-only substrate*surprise, surprise*. Your opinion really doesn't matter, because I am just saying what has and has not worked in my personal experience with woodlovers, and suggesting others do the same. My genetic library likely exceeds yours by at least 3x; in regards to woodlover genetics, so no, youre not gonna bait me into showing fruits(which idk how you weren't able to find if you took the time out of your day to scour my posted pics to straw man an argument to debase my position). It's there if you really look hard enough.
Regardless, you remind me of someone on Facebook who said my tempered chocolate was contaminated because they didnt like the surface it was sitting on, and was gonna get ppl sick and whatnot. Then proceeded to post all their petri dishes to convince me what a masterful cultivators they are. Before we get too far off track, if you want to compare photos, I want to see what a bag/bin of colonized fermented wood substrate verses colonized ferm+sterilized wood sub, as I guarantee the ferm+sterilized will have much more healthy, stronger, and vigorous growth.
Again, your opinion doesn't really matter and so whatever you post I'm gonna take with a grain of salt because anybody can just post a pic of their colonized fermed+sterilized wood sub & say it was only fermented. My apologies if I am inadvertently exposing some type of agenda, whatever that is, I'm just trying to get you guys on game. As I guarantee I wouldn't have even needed to make my first comment if man's fermented substrate didn't contaminate. Though it did, so as someone who has personal experience sees someone struggling, I commented about my preference for sterilized sub after fermentation using the most logical points possible.
Closing point, good luck with your fermented only substrate.

That's a great question. The simplest way to explain this would be to create an analogy. Lets say I took a cucumber and submerged it in a jar of water for a month. That cucumber swells and changes in form, it doesn't stay exactly the same. Same thing with fermenting wood, it swells or allows for water to penetrate the wood, yet still isn't sterile. Contaminats, if not present prior to sending to bulk, could possibly get in and mess up your grow. Sterilizing, ensures that doesn't happen, while at the same time the wood is prepped and at a receivable texture for mycelium during the fermentation process.

Yeah, my bad Churp, I condensed it to futher illustrate my point. I should explain now that I have a chance to elaborate on what I meant by 30 min quick boil to packing in jars and sterilizing for four hours. I agree the four hour sterilization time is a bit overkill, and I would likely not run my 15psi PC for that long. The intantpot though, since it runs at 12.5 psi & has the option for four hours pc time without any fussing with it; is good for just ensuring your wood sub is sterile after fermentation and letting dry to field capacity.

Minus all the emotional attachments, what would be the one interesting thing to test would be if there's gonna be a difference between just soaked and sterilised wood chips (A) vs fermented and then sterilized wood chips (B).
My best guess in advance would be there would be 0 difference in terms of clean colonisation and maybe, just maybe, there's a small chance that B might grow a little faster. But yeah, that's after weeks extra of fermenting so not much benefit there.

I've been saying sterilised chips is safer than fermented for years. No argument there.
My question is: what would be the added benefit of fermenting the wood chips pre-sterilisation vs just soaking them enough? (About 2 days ime).

Yeah, results are results, but I'd rather have a dozen fruits for all my work verses one fruit. I've yet to rationalize how I would sterilize three to six yards of fermented wood substrate. I suppose a 50 gallon drum, maybe. Is that what you mean by bulk, or by bulk do you mean 6 quarts of substrate?
Your quick boil, long dry, and average sterilizing times, is that after you fermented your sub? I used to skip a ferment until I realized it works alot better than either by themselves if you ferment then sterilize the wood.

Well, in regards to that, I am not entirely sure. I have been operating under the presumption that once it's been soaked for two days, :psychsplit: that's fermentation. In my personal journey, I haven't given any thought at all until right now of where soaking ends and fermenting starts.
I've heard people have success with just two days "fermenting/soaking". Success is success, though I would definitely rather have multiple fruits verses just one or two. The thing is, I'm a little burned out on all the many fermentation-only projects that went to crap.
I mean, I just sent a pint jar halfway full of colonized ferm+sterilized subaeruginosa to bulk, maybe a pint and a half of eucalyptus substrate. I prepped the eucalyptus sub after a two day soak in a sous vide @160f° for 12 hours, but I didn't bring up the subaeruginosa to talk about the bulk I sent it to. I brought it up bcuz I've had that jar since March, and it is as healthy as the day of full consolidation.
I can say with pretty reasonable confidence that if the wood in that jar was soley fermented, I would not see that healthy growth last for this long, as there's no two ways around it, submerging in water for however long, does not equal sterilization.
Though I'm glad we can strike a chord of relatability, as I just discovered last year how much more beneficial sterilizing wood sub after the soak/ferment is. I think a simple experiment would be for one two place a bit of fermented/soaked-only sub on agar, and place a piece of fermented/soaked+sterilized sub on a separate agar dish, and see which one contams first, if any. My guess would be the soley soaked/fermented substrate.

Actually my opinion does matter in here, my understanding of woodlovers and repeated success with them is one of the reasons I was made a TC.

So cutting through that four post wall of rambling, the conclusion we have come to is you have never successfully grown woodlovers.  Asking someone giving poor advice to show their work is not an attack, it’s simply asking for proof of concept.

Here’s some woodlovers growing on fermented chips:
