Dang it looks so close I was wondering when its ready to spawn do you carefully remove the jar lid and wipe the uper part of the jar with 70% alcohol wipe? I can't see in your picture but I been noticing grains sticking to the lids of my jars and its definitely not going to colonize it all the way up there. I been worried about tiny amounts of grian from the break and shake getting exposed to air when its opened.

I don’t have any stuck to the lids anymore. A couple shakes on these got them off. I spanked the lid after inoculating and they fell off.

Sometimes they stick to sfd fibers.

I always remove uncolonized grain prior to spawn

Re coir: getting close to time to hydrate my coir. I bet I won't make the right amount, but I don't want to go way over or under. Based on my set up, it's been recommended I shoot for about 9 cups of hydrated coir. Any idea how much dry coir I would need to break off a brick to make 9 cups?

Fwiw: grain jars have about 2.5-3 cups (300grams) grain spawn, and I will be fruiting in 7 qt tubs

Can I still break and shake this as its got pins (but not even 50%)?

Thanks in advance.

If you have a bucket you are doing your coir in just make a bricks worth. You can take the unused coir, cover the bucket tightly with a lid and leave it for when you need it next time. It’ll be fine to use. You’ll want to use a 1:2 or 1:3 ratio which fits nicely in a 7qt shoebox size tote. 3 cups spawn to 6-9 cups FC coir.

You can do whatever you wish...

Something is concerning though that it is pinning.

Was that injection port added before pc or after... how was it maintained sterile after the fact?
Did you test the lc first?

But the break and shake is probably a good idea as it will confirm if there is a reason.  The pinns will just just help inoculation, but if you need the to preserve the culture it'd be better to clone tissue from em

If that is pinning already with the size pins I see, and the rest of the bag hasn’t seen a bit of mycelial growth, there’s gotta be a reason. How long has the bag been going?

Was on hiatus for months, going back in it. Still have a bunch of straw so I have been using that.

I used some older jars that I never spawned, put them to a 1:3 ratio, which might be pushing it for pure straw (barely compacted). They are colonizing, and I have seen that straw is slow, but is it possible that there weren't enough grains for 1:3, 1:4 to induce pinning? I do see primordia so I guess it's not a concern, but wandering over here.

On a similar note, I put the leftover fallen grains from g2g transfer into a small straw container for shits and gigs, but it is growing quite nicely. I also have leftover straw in my cooler (which is contaminant free after pasteurization so far, been a few weeks).

Could I expand colonized straw to more straw and get a flush? Or without the nutrients from grains they really don't have enough energy to fruit?

I've done this with oysters, though the returns are diminished.

Thanks.

The bag was bought pre sterilised with port already attached. It was inoculated with a mss (I now know thats not a sterile technique but it was a free gift so fugured I'd try it, strain is a mystery - only legal to buy spores here and agar is the next thing I'll learn).

It was inoculated about 6 weeks ago.

My last batch of ACC colonized the sub beautifully and gave me a nice flush, but triched out right as I was about to harvest. This batch is giving me blobs and before full colonization. Same substrate of straight coir, same ratio 1:2, same type of shoebox, same lineage of plates. What gives?

Still looking for some info on this, but here’s an update:

Looks like some of my blobs are turning into fruits. Some of the blobs are turning blue. Does this mean anything? And are the blobs edible and when do you know when to harvest the blobs? Also don’t mind the pooled water in one photo. I took the lid and tilted it in that area to get the water off it and it hadn’t soaked into the sub yet.

Ive never regretted throwing more coir at a project

No just an unmodded shoebox. Same way I grew them last time. I have the lid just sat down and not clipped at the ends.

So the blueing is just the actives then I guess?

Has anyone owned a really cheap autoclave? I seen some that don't have a dial so you can't change the temperature. They really inexpensive compared to the ones with the ability to change heat settings. I found some from $100-$300 without heat settings but most with heat settings over $600.

I was probably just going to get a 8 quart insta pot though. I only want the autoclave to do large half gallon mason jars so its not really necessary definitely to expensive for something that will only colonize slower.

From what I've been told.. but have no actual experience with. (But I do trust the TCS that have told me)

Half gallon jars of grain are going to give you a really hard time. Because of the glass jar and the amount of grain. Getting the middle to sterilize can be pretty difficult.

I've Been Told in regards to jars just stick with qts or less.

If you want to do big amounts of grain like that. I would consider using bags.

However
If Anyone out there does use bigger jars like 64 Oz + for sterilizing  grain  successfully. Please speak up. Cause im definitely interested in knowing.

The only instance I can think of somebody using a gallon jar. was treefrog w/her all in one pan jars. But that's not all grain so:shrug:

Im going off fuzzy memory here but I believe autoclaves get hotter than an at home pc - please double check for me?

That being said, if you wanna do a half gallon of spawn for shits n gigs id pc at a min of 3.5h  i might go closer to 5 just in case, but I see it as more of a hassle than its worth

Yeah that's pretty much how I feel about it. Plus I don't like to run my PC for that long if I don't have to. I mean I'll be okay if I had a really high trivet and a lot of extra water. But I'm always getting low on water at the two to two and a half hour mark. so I wouldn't want to even risk it.
