Gopher it dude. I saw your thread and loved the ingenuity. I just had no input because I'm a smooth brain :ughidiot:

Adding a little bowl inside a normal glass petri to make a divided petri with glass no pour is also pretty shweet

I might make another thread later with the decent ideas instead of proof of concept shit

Has anyone owned a really cheap autoclave? I seen some that don't have a dial so you can't change the temperature. They really inexpensive compared to the ones with the ability to change heat settings. I found some from $100-$300 without heat settings but most with heat settings over $600.

I was probably just going to get a 8 quart insta pot though. I only want the autoclave to do large half gallon mason jars so its not really necessary definitely to expensive for something that will only colonize slower.

This brings up a (noob) question I've had percolating...when is an insta pot okay to use?  Do they generate enough pressure?  I have one already and have been wondering if it'll be adequate for small runs of (small) grain jars. I'm not looking to do much large-scale cultivation.

Waiting for this to colonize (was inoculated with mss), but now I have pins. Question is, can break and shake and the fruit be reabsorbed? Or will it turn nasty. Not even 50% colonized so not sure what to do. Was going to spawn to bulk (cvg).
Thanks

Yeah, you might as well be asking "So, what's the deal with Northern Ireland?"

There are many pages of debate devoted to this topic.

We focus on pressure because higher pressure actually means higher temperatures. At atmospheric pressure, our maximum sterilization temperature is the boiling point of water- the steam escapes from a pot of boiling water. When we seal that steam in a vessel, it's able to retain additional heat and then transfer it to whatever we're trying to sterilize. Of course a vessel with NO escape plan for the steam is just a bomb waiting to happen, so then there's venting added which will release the steam once it hits a target pressure. Regardless, it's actually about the temperature we can hit inside the vessel, which corresponds exactly with the pressure it hits.

So, different things will be killed at different temperatures, but you have to get your medium up to that temperature first. You also may need to hold it at that temperature for a certain period of time. Or, a lower temperature might work if you can hold your material at it for longer. Generally speaking, these relationships are exponential. For example there is actually steam sterilization conducted at atmospheric pressure, e.g. for large-scale culinary mushroom production. But it may take days instead of hours. I think IP's run at like 12.5 psi or something like that, whereas many of us run modified Prestos at 17.

In addition to going with longer sterilization runs, the other thing to think about is the material and containers you're working with. Almost everyone agrees that an IP is fine for agar- the containers are small, and the medium is liquid, so the steam will easily penetrate and transfer heat everywhere. If you want to try prepping grains in an IP, then you should think about the size of your grains and the size of your vessels. Small jars of millet are going to be easier to pull off than a quart jar of rye.

Thanks for this GREAT reply!  I'm a gear head so I'm probably fated to get a PC anyway, but it's good to know more of the science behind the method.  Very much appreciated.

Now...what IS the deal with Northern Ireland, anyway?

unless the volume is insufficient, an instant pot is all you need at home for sterilization of this sort.

From what I've been told.. but have no actual experience with. (But I do trust the TCS that have told me)

Half gallon jars of grain are going to give you a really hard time. Because of the glass jar and the amount of grain. Getting the middle to sterilize can be pretty difficult.

I've Been Told in regards to jars just stick with qts or less.

If you want to do big amounts of grain like that. I would consider using bags.

However
If Anyone out there does use bigger jars like 64 Oz + for sterilizing  grain  successfully. Please speak up. Cause im definitely interested in knowing.

The only instance I can think of somebody using a gallon jar. was treefrog w/her all in one pan jars. But that's not all grain so:shrug:

Was on hiatus for months, going back in it. Still have a bunch of straw so I have been using that.

I used some older jars that I never spawned, put them to a 1:3 ratio, which might be pushing it for pure straw (barely compacted). They are colonizing, and I have seen that straw is slow, but is it possible that there weren't enough grains for 1:3, 1:4 to induce pinning? I do see primordia so I guess it's not a concern, but wandering over here.

On a similar note, I put the leftover fallen grains from g2g transfer into a small straw container for shits and gigs, but it is growing quite nicely. I also have leftover straw in my cooler (which is contaminant free after pasteurization so far, been a few weeks).

Could I expand colonized straw to more straw and get a flush? Or without the nutrients from grains they really don't have enough energy to fruit?

Im going off fuzzy memory here but I believe autoclaves get hotter than an at home pc - please double check for me?

That being said, if you wanna do a half gallon of spawn for shits n gigs id pc at a min of 3.5h  i might go closer to 5 just in case, but I see it as more of a hassle than its worth

^ agreed. IP for agar is fine, and for pf tek as well.

Grains have always been a fail for me. Maybe if you stick to half pints, but even then.
