No they shouldn't be unless you're referring to the stick on sfd that require doubling or trippling to be effective.

If you're having issues or want to give your cakes a decent watering while they're fruiting try bottom watering. Set them inside of a plastic lid flipped over or a metal lid and ring with some foil in it making kind of a dish. And pour a little bit of water in it and let the bottom of the cakes suck it up and get the water it needs.

Bottom watering tek

A lot of us do it around here it's a good way to keep your cakes and tubs getting the sufficient water they need without worrying about too much or too little about misting.

After a day if there's still water left and it all hasn't been sucked up you can dump it out or let it go another day as long as it doesn't become stagnant.

You could also do this with shoe boxes and tubs as long as you're not using a liner. If they start to shrink and pull away from the sides and you've got gaps. You can pour some water down the sides.

Thanks, Hippie! I might dunk these for a bit today then add them back with a lid.

Why?

Another question: Why does spawn ratio matter? Does a 0.5:4 ratio produce less flushes/less potent fruits than a 1:2 ratio?

It's not about potency. More spawn means faster colonization. Moir coir means more water for the mushrooms to grow. With super clean spawn you can get away with more coir which means more water for mushrooms to grow.

If you are giving them a dunk/soak, when you return them to the fruiting chamber and put them on a lid don't fill the lid with water just yet because they have already absorbed water from the dunk/soak. Wait a few days or until you start to see some pins for the 2nd flush.  When I did PF cakes I use to put my cakes in the pint size soup containers you get with wonton soup from the Chinese takeout. I fill them with water, drop in the cake and pop the lid on this way there was minimal air inside it and the cake would be fully submerged. In the quart containers I could fit two cakes in.

Quick Coconut coir question - I see everyone on here using bricks of coir. Besides price, is there any reason to use compressed coir over loose coir? Just wondering if the loose stuff is more prone to contamination or something...

(The hydroponics guy says it's exactly the same product, just loose)

Cheers

I have heard the some brands of loose coir add Trich intentionally since it’s intended as ready-to-use for gardening.  So, just make sure there is no Trich added.

In this instance the grain also acts as the food/nutrition source for the myc and fruits. Can get away with less grain spawn when using supplemented substrate.

Some compressed bricks have it too. Just an FYI

Idk, i like to keep a bag of loose coir around for top layers or single jars of spawn. But hydrating a brick and using it all at once is much more satisfying

If you bucket tel coir it kills trich , but my bags sit hydrated for months on end without ever germinating anything

The stuff i get isnt hydrated, but i cant imagine it would make using it good enough to forego bricks entirely. I can put like a dozen bricks in the same space as an 8qt bag

If I was doing a few tubs I'd probably go back to bricks ...maybe lol, but space is no issue for me and I'm not gonna put in a days effort to get 20 plus bricks done 😂  I'm just a lazy bastard

One or two bricks usually has me set up for a while.
For some reason I was thinking that the heat and pressure of the brick making process would kill Trich too.
Canna has been consistent for me so far, so I will likely just stick with that.

How the ever-loving fuck do you get these media bottles clear again?  I've only used them for agar prep. After pouring I boil water in them to get any gelled agar scraps out, then I pour that out, fill them 50% with more boiling water and dish soap, and go to town with a bottle brush. Then I run them in the dishwasher upside down.  And all four of them look like this:

It's the shape.  I suggest lab-grade containers. (not flasks)  Mine cleans in the dishwasher.

And I always pour around 50*.  Never get these chunks I hear about.  Do 20-30 plates at a time.  Rinse with hot water.

Looks like hard water stains maybe? Personally I don't worry about it being crystal clear it gets pc'd

AcKchUaLLy hah, its just the alkaline elements in your water.  potassium, calcium and magnesium.  you can put a cap of venegar in your pc and it will helpz.

if you want it off, youll need to use CLR or muriatic acid.

all my jars and bottles look like that.  its "patina."

clear bottles are for parafilm people.  god hates parafim people.
