I just harvested the last of my ATL7 fruits in coco coir 32 quart tub. I was wondering if the truffles have formed even while the mushrooms were growing or do I flip the lid and have them form or is it even possible to get truffles from a fruited substrate?

Just wait till your grow is finished and then break the substrate up by hand. There’s no reason to harvest the stones now if they can grow another month and become more potent.
But I normally don’t find very many when I grow them. It’s only before I mix them up in the substrate.

Interesting. So you suggest waiting another month? And do I have to leave the lid closed?

If you’re not going to harvest anymore mushrooms, go ahead and get the stones out of it but normally when the substrate is done producing mushrooms, everything is spent and it’s best to harvest any stones that are left

It seems like the more mushrooms grow the less stones are formed.

Ime if there aren’t stones busting through the surface there’s usually only a few small ones in there.

Can someone give me an opinion on these two jars. I was away for two weeks and have been home a week. I dropped agar into them on 6/18, gave them a good shake on 7/4 a few days before I went away. They recovered nicely in about 36 hours. Am I seeing stones? If they are the are multiplying and the smaller ones got larger in the week I’ve been home. I’m about to leave for another week on Friday. I don’t have time to send them to bulk until I get back. Looking for some guidance, advice and opinion on these two jars as to what I’m seeing?

I'm no expert, but from the research I've done those jars look like they contain healthy sclerotia. They can remain and grow in jars for several months gaining size and potency.

Well if true then this is good news! To me they look like healthy jars besides what would be the sclerotia if that is what it is. If it is then the jars are healthy through and through.  So what if in 10 0r 11 days I decided to spawn these to bulk? Do I remove the stones or send them to bulk as well?

Those are sclerotia, and look really good for such a short amount of time. Again, just going by what I've seen from others, the stones can be harvested if desired and it seems to help things regarding fruiting if a few small stones are left in the substrate. It will most likely continue to form stones as well as begin to fruit if conditions are right. They seem to need a proper casing to fruit well.  I've just discovered sclerotia myself and hope to get a few jars looking like yours!

Thanks for your answers! So what is the casing you are referring to?  My usual operating plan is straight FC coir. I spawn at 1:2, mix well, level & compact the sub, then top with a thin 1/4 inch coating of coir and level and compact that.

Most people recommend a peat moss/vermiculite casing that's pasteurized and possibly ph adjusted. A pseudo casing as you described is just a top layer that will most likely get colonized as well. That seems to work just fine for cubes, but exotics such as ATL7 don't do as well.  A proper casing doesn't get colonized, but is trickier to make.  BUT...if you just do a top layer and fruiting suffers, at least you'll know what doesn't work:shrug:

True story! If it doesn’t work then case it I guess after colonization like as I’ve been having another conversation Pans to case after colonization. I’ll have to look up a peet/verm recipe.

Stonesun has a great tutorial all about these sclerotia producing strains. Rose has a thread called 'easier than cubes' that's a wealth of information. Also member 99.99 has some amazing fruiting grows. If you have some extra time there's a lot to learn. Good luck!

Dont use coir the mycelium will just grow into that and digest that just like the rest of your substrate what you want to use is Pete Moss
About a eighth of an inch to a quarter of an inch thick
Use it wet ore i use it bone dry because the Martha greenhouse and humidifier I use add all the moisture needed

I agree, coir isn't the best casing material.

Peat moss or seedling mix is what you want.

Ya'll know me, I prefer stones so I rarely fruit.

That being said, I make (pasteurize) any casing material with seedling mix/peat moss mixed with CALCI-SAND... once a year. It has yet to contaminate in the bag or as a casing. It's glorious. 😎🫶🏻
