Thanks for the advice.  Unfortunately, I was not able to read the replies prior to leaving.  The ones I cased with peat/verm chewed through casing.  The one with with jiffy mix and straight verm not as much.  I'll see what things are looking like when I get back and recase if needed.  I've got a bunch of clean jars in the pipeline so gonna keep cracking at it till something gives.  I can be patient.

Plus just got 200g fresh ochras off a shoebox and put in freezer to freeze dry.

If you are getting impatient or struggling with subtrops...having a couple shoeboxes of ochras will make you feel better about your mycology skills.

That will keep ypu busy while you are waiting.....less waiting, more tripping

Yes.  Harvest right.  Great way to preserve stuff.  We got it to store food.  Right now max temp set at 125 on dry cycle and takes maybe 12 hrs    No apparent potency loss.  Vacuum seal in jars after that.  I end up crushing  them up and making tea or lemon tek or capsules.

Ii like to freeze them before going in freeze dryer.  Makes for a shorter cycle.  And doesn’t seem to hurt anything leaving them in the freezer for a week or two prior to freeze dry

I am sure if you just froze the stuff and then thawed that it would be a nasty mess

Alright I figured at some point in their development my mushroom pins would start looking more like subtrops but at this point I'm almost too afraid to ask..

What am I growing here? Print came labeled as subtrop. It could have been mixed up by vendor. Could have been mixed up by me, I'm bad at labeling things, but I have no other genetics that look anything close to this.

All of these are growing in just coir with a verm casing.

These pics are from a bigger mono tub that seems healthy right now, but weird growth

These are shoeboxes that look healthy in the pic but later showed contam. The pin was pulled when cutting out green.

They blue like crazy when aborting, and bruise after a bit when handled.

Did they give a variety of subtropicalis? I'm dealing with the same thing with a Coyopolan culture and I'm pretty sure it's Verticillium. Wouldn't rule out viral either but I do have have it narrowed down to the culture so I'll have to start a new one. Thankfully Supa recently hooked me up with a print so all I need now is TIME :crankey:

Second flush Coyopolan..

Had the same thing with an ms xico culture last year. They got this far and stalled.

Tub started a little sparse, but seems to be filling in now. Most uneven flush ever, probably should have laymixed it.....

Thanks TCO and wavy

No variety given as far as I can remember, I'll ask next time I see him. How did you come up with Verticilium? I did a quick search of that and all I get is plant pathogen stuff.

My g2g master jar didn't recover after innoculating my receiving jars. I saw something about a late shake stalling spawn, but I was sure it was pans, not semps. The receiving jars are hauling ass. Thoughts?

Your master was mature and full of protective metabolite, low in calories, and the decision to bounce back was deemed by the colony as not worth the effort.

I have some Semp jars that I think are good:

I have a couple questions:

Are you guys pasteurizing your coir like Melgo recommends?

When do you start misting? During colonization? After colonization? After pins?

What's the consensus on casing? I have Jiffy Mix and some Peat/Lime.

@Puff

Prep your coir like you normally would

I started misting when pins were about 1/2" tall (my tub pinned quickly so there was no time for the casing to dry out)

I had great success with coarse verm as a casing, jiffy and 50/50+ also work

Good luck buddy

Thanks Nichrome and Dala!

I got some coir soaking in a bucket now. Do you squeeze all the extra moisture out so its just under field capacity? I'm pretty sure I've read that wetter coir slows Semp colonization.

Are we introducing fae at spawn like with cubes or latching the lid closed while it colonizes?

I'm thinking of running at least one tub inside my JCM because my work has me away from the house a lot lately and my wife's back is acting up. I have a reptile misting system rigged to my JCM so I can keep things moist automatically. I just fill a 5 gallon bucket and set the timer. It just sprays a fine mist horizontally over top of the trays.

What kind of spawn ratio are recommended for semps? I'm thinking 2 quarts coir to 1/2 quart spawn so 4:1.

First pins of coyopolan subtrops from wild spores showed up today.
Spawned 5/9
Cased 5/25

*ignore the typo on the label, was T2 not 12 *

@Puff

All the semp gods in this thread seem to run the coir a little drier so that's what I did.  I suppose you could give it a squeeze, or you could add some verm if you have some on hand.  When I did it, I added less water to my coir prep (3.5x instead of 4x).  Seemed to work well.

Introduce fae at spawn just like with cubes.  Basically, run em like cubes but w/ a bit drier sub.  That goes for spawn:sub ratio as well; if it works for cubes it should work for semps.

JCM might work well for for your situation.  I started misting once a day and quickly went up to twice a day for the duration of the grow.  That said, air exchange is still important; mine would revert to vegetative growth when there wasn't enough air.

It's a new species for you and there are no one-size-fits-all answers, but if you make note what you do and use your cult experience to read the situation as it presents itself then you'll do fine.

Excited for your venture into semps!

Good to see you Henry :sunny:
