P. Mexicana / P. Cubensis Mexican
    #3274712 - 10/25/04 11:10 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

These appear to be the same species from what I can make out but yet theres very different pictures floating around the net.

1 Type looking like standard cubes, the other looks like P. Semilanceata (liberty caps).

I'm growing a block of mycelium I purchased as P. Mexicana.  I am hoping for the Liberty cap looking variety.

Hopefully someone can enlighten me on this confusion?

I read Mushroom John saying that they look like libs and that 1 gram of mexicana is equivilent to 3 grams of cubes!!!  If this is true I will need to be careful as I rarely do more than 1.5g of cubes nowadays!

Sorry for my poor spelling and I hope its in the right place! :rasta:

The two are different species.

Psilocybe cubensis Strain mexican,B+,EQ,GT,etc...
Psilocybe mexicana Strain A, Strain B, Strain Jalisco.

P. mexicana produces sclerotia and fruits. The fruits resemble liberty caps, the sclerotia look like brains(soft rocks). P. mexicana sclerotia are less potent then the fruits when dried.

Dry sclerotia is less potent then dry cubensis. Dry mexicana fruits are more potent then dry cubensis fruits.

If you eat an eighth of cubensis dry, start with a gram of mexicana dry. Potencies are strange. Sensitivities to exotic species are HIGH sometimes. Even though the potency is supposed to be only slightly stronger, experiences can be percieved as ALOT STRONGER.

2 grams dry of any of the indoor exotics in circulation is a very strong dose. Mexicana, samuiensis, tampanensis. Experiences will vary depending on the individual consuming the mushrooms.

Always start low and work your way up the dosage latter.

With exotics you can start as low as 1/2 gram dry. Increase in half gram increments.

Mexicana are also harder to get to fruit. Not to form stones, but to fruit mushrooms.

Also, wet sclerotia is twice as potent as wet cubie shrooms. Eating 30 grams wet or 3 dry of the cubies would be equal to eating only 15 grams wet of sclerotia. Though the dry wet is less potent, stones contain less water (I believe 60% instead of 90%) then cubie fruits. I'm not sure about fresh weights of Mexicana fruits if they are 90% water or not. Dry sclerotia is 2/3 the potency of dry cubies..so if you usually eat 2 grams dry (20 fresh) cubies, eat 10g fresh sclerotia, eat 3 dry sclerotia, or .5-1 gram of Mexicana fruits (mushrooms). Good luck! The fruits won't be like libs, smaller and thin..species other then cubes are fun though!

Mine just started fruiting. 3 months in the jars to form sclerotia then cased and fruited as normal.

NOTE: It fruits from the sclerotia!

Oh and a pic

Awesome cyber.. always a great thing to see. mexicana A is it? What did you use for casing, did you cold shock? How long did you wait before casing? I've heard 4 months for sclerotia production to be at max before fruiting.

Nice.

Yes it is.

From Sporeworks, I won it here http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...rue#Post2904943

What did you use for casing,

50% Coco-coir 50% vermiculite

No, I just cased it, and put it directly into the fruiting chamber.

3 months, That is what I had read you were supposed to wait.

I just do not know what they are supposed to look like when they are ready to print. I picked a few today that looked to be dropping spores. I assume they do not open up flat like Ps. Cubensis.

Hehe.. i've been wandering around for mexi spores for a few weeks now. I would normally beg you for a print, but I've just ordered from sporeworks. Who needs 42.50 anyway :smile:Whatever the price, after hearing these tough fruiting stories I know how much they deserve it.

Not sure about what to look for in terms of printing time, but I'm sure Anno or workman or una would know.

Mexicana is the best. It costs more, so stretch your spores, it is hard to print... but it is worth its weight in gold.

Mexicana is AMAZING.

Every cubensis cultivator should try it.

The Bulk sclerotia you get is well worth it... and if you get prints, they are worth their weight in gold.

About 7 days from the casing to fruiting.

Older mycelium fruits faster then young mycelium. Young mycelium can take 14 days or more to fruit from casing. Typically they go through a rapid sclerotia formation stage when cased, until fruiting occurs. Sometimes they don't fruit at all. Sometimes they fruit and form very little sclerotia, sometimes they form both.

Older jars can be fruited quickly when cased WITH or WITHOUT sclerotia.

Cold shocks are optional.

But, typically, the older the jar, the more likely sclerotia will be present, right?

I think what he means is you can remove the sclerotia as you case it, only using the mycelium.

You do risk contam if you do. I suggest harvesting the easy to grab stones... and letting the others get cased. You can always harvest them later.

Sounds like a plan, that is what I shall do then. I have some jars that have been knocked up for about 3 1/2 months now..a little over 2 months into making stones. Think I'll give casing them and a few freshly colonized jars a shot.

Well I am working with Tampanensis though..I may not get as good results! I do plan on cold shocking for a few weeks though as suggested for these species.

I've read that you want to keep the sclerotia and mycellium as intact as possible. Obviously if you're going from jar to casing its not completely possible, but best not to go picking through it perhaps.

I think that when I give it a try I'll pick out only a couple of easy stones as Cervantes said. Perhaps for g2g, or might work it out on agar, depending on how safe I feel about the stones  as I'm sure after the long time it takes for this to grow I'll have nothing left to inoculate with and I'd like to save these expensive spores.

The thing is, a lot of sclerotia forms near the tops of jars. I see no harm in harvesting these stones, before casing the substrate.
