You say you use multiple teks for grain prep... Do you smash them all together or stick with one from start to finish?

You say you went... LC --> Agar --> LC --> grain. Did you go to the same LC after Agar or did you start a new batch of LC from agar?

One would be a test of LC, the other is the creation of a new LC.

It's not the grain itself. It's what you're doing with it and what you are putting in there. What makes you so sure your agar game is on par? Or even your LC game? LC is usually done by way more advanced cultivators who have a serious agar game. Not first timers for the convenience.

Are you properly venting your PC and washing the grains with soap @cranberry?  Corn and Milo both are much denser grains than brown rice.  Feed grains are also more likely to have a fungicide sprayed on them.  So washing is important for the fungicide, and venting ensures proper sterilization of the denser grains.

But yeah, those grains sound nasty. You shouldn't be picking rocks out of animal feed.

Since you readily admit how new you are to this, have you considered that maybe your Agar game needs work? I hope you aren't shooting spores to grain.

Another possibility is the seals on your jars or bags could be in question. Have you modded your lids at all?

Let's walk it back further... What exactly is your step by step up until you see contams?

I didn't notice anything on the agar. I went LC - Agar - LC - Grain.

I use bags for grain. I use a fresh syringe and needle every session, and use an induction coil to sterilize the needle in between bags. I even use my SAB for injecting the bags.

I don't think there's anything wrong with my grain prep. As I said, 2 1/2 to 3 hours at 15psi and I've tried multiple teks for hydrating. My feed grain is dirty and I don't know how old it is. I had to kill all the mites in the corn using my oven, and the milo has rocks, dust, stems, and the occasional beetle.
Myco philia had the same issue, I honestly just think the quality of feed grain where I am is shit. I can't ignore the fact that every tub with feed grain contamed and only the rice survived.

Ditch the LC and inoculate with agar.  LC is absolutely not a beginner friendly medium, it's where I'm seeing a significant portion of problems come from these days (newbies with vendor LC). Bags are also not beginner friendly.

Also, fresh syringe and needle every session?!  Are you trying to make your own syringes?  Cause if so we found the problem right there.

I really think you should be doing agar > jars > spawn.  You've bit off a lot for a newbie and I think it's causing you problems.

Nothing a proper PC cycle shouldn't kill deader than a doornail.  I maintain that properly prepared feed grain is no different from any other grain source.

My brother...I would urge you to walk before you try to run. Tossing 10 of 13 tubs is nauseating and a lot of wasted work. You'll be chasing the dragon after your first harvest, but it's important to get to that point and not burn out beforehand. Good luck, amigo.

No, just bruising from misting and fanning

Meaning don’t do that anymore. Your environment should be good enough that you don’t need to mist and especially that you don’t need to fan. Too many cycles of this behavior can hurt your tub.

I was told to mist because there was no water on the surface. I had the lid flipped upside down, no misting, or fanning, and for 10 days the pins were stagnant. I decided to crack the lid open and inch and they took off growing, but then I noticed the water  rads disappeared so I started misting and this happened. Should I just leave the lid cracked open and don’t mist or fan then?

Never fan, ever.  It can't make things better, but it sure can make them worse.

Any clue what this would be in the middle? I had dropped a spore cluster, then moved it to the side with a needle by picking it up. The yeast looking contam was where it originally dropped.

Already transferred good growth, but it seems to be overtaking the contam (cubensis btw)

Is this cobweb? There is a distinct difference between the light whispey gray and the solid white stuff growing.

I think that is not good. Mold of some kind, if not cobweb. :frown:

I inoculated 18 jars, 9 with TidalWave and 9 with Penis Envy.  All done at the same time from clean agar.  All the Penis Envy Jars have this darkening on the oat grains.  All the Tidal Wave jars look good.  Can anyone tell me if this is contamination or is it some kind of bruising?

Thanks for the quick reply.  I wonder why it only showed up in the PE jars.  What do you think, should I pitch them or try and fruit and see what I get?
