If it didn’t fruit last year and it has wood chips, you may want to let it ride. Use the other  colonized chips and make another spot. Opinion only.

This is all new info to me.

I was under the impression that the following year it is recommended to break up the top layer, but you guys are saying to only do that if it doesn’t fruit this year? And even then, I should just throw the wood chips on top and not break up the bed?

Are there any posts/references you could point me to so I can research more??

This thread for starters, but besides that I don't know anyone who breaks up old beds and mixes them into new ones, or at least I cannot recall anyone who does.  We all pretty much top things off.  I'll break off a chunk from a patch and move it to woodchips in other places, but I just bury the chunk, I don't mix.

When I am establishing a new patch I will break and mix spawn and uncolonized chips, but I top it off with fresh chips so I can't see any myc sticking out.

If you picked mushrooms from a patch you started than at the end of the season you replenish the wood chips so it fruits the next season again. If you started a patch in june but it didn’t fruit in the fall, it may still be colonizing the original chips? If it’s not straight dirt, i wouldn’t add more wood chips. Also, i am under the impression, adding colonized chips to a patch all ready colonized, is kinda introducing competition?

I’m not familiar with this 1/3 thing you speak of. Maybe i am just confused atm?

I think he's just coming in hot with something not from the shroomery thinking it was universal

And yeah, none of that is necessary at all.  Just wait till fruit, then dump and spread another couple of inches of chips when all done fruiting that year.

No, I do not have any links really.  This thread is hundreds and hundreds of pages of people growing all kinds of woodlovers in all kinds of ways.

Ah, I believe that is where I got confused. You can break up the old patch ONCE ITS BEEN HARVESTED, add new wood chips and new spawn

I wasn’t coming in hot from info not on the Shroomery, or whatever, I was just reading the posts on here differently.

Thanks for the clarification! I’m just to leave it alone.

Hypothetically, if a grower had perfect spawn, perfect conditions, etc. and made these beds last June would they expect to see fruits this Fall (compared to last Fall or next Fall)? Hope that question makes sense, I just want to get an idea if this is the best year for me to see fruits or not

No one is saying break up the old patch, you are adding that into all of this on your own.

I'm not sure why you're insisting on that.

There's too many variables in your question about fruiting cyans.  If you keep messing with them you will never see fruits.  Just leave the patch alone until it fruits, and sometimes they do not fruit.

Hi everybody,

some of my Psilocybe cyanescens jars are ready for further use.
Can you have a look at them, please?
Its rye grain, inoculated with LC.
They have been completely white and dry until full colonization. (about 10 days ago)
After letting them sit for consolidation they got a little bit wet and i am not completely sure if there is a yellowish coloration at the bottom of the jars.

Furthermore i am not sure how to use them to inoculate woodchips.
My goal is an outdoor grow in a big flower pot on my balcony.

Should i sterilize woodchips in a mycobag and inoculate them with grain in front of my flowhood?

or

should i just pasteurize woodchips in jars and mix them together with the grain in a plastic tub, let it colonize and then put it into a flower pot together with more wet woodchips?

Just spawn to woodchips wherever outside and water it.  Done.  No pasteurizing, no boil, just yeet and forgeet (i'm working on a solid five)

That's A LOT of spawn for a flower pot, are you going to try and fill the whole pot with woodchips?  I don't recommend it.  They seem to do best as a 2"-4" layer on top of soil.  I like to spawn to my blueberry pots for example:

I have a shoebox of oats spawned to hwfp and verm that I want to expand to apple smoker chips. Ps. Cyans. How should I hydrate and should I lay them on top or mix it all together. The plan is to fruit in a potter outdoors

ive always had better results with bbq chips by boiling them for an hour give or take i usually toss out the water twice too

i have just soaked them and sometimes i just throw dry chips on top my patches but that wouldnt really work spawning in a planter

boiling them quickly gets them hydrated and kinda soft and they start to break apart easily

Thank you for your feedback, Mr Piggy.  :-)

I have zero experience with woodloving species, so this is my first attempt.
Will follow your recommendation and put the woodchips on top of soil instead of filling the whole pot with it.
Does that mean you even don't cover the chips with a top layer of soil?
Is it necessary to soak the woodchips in water for a day or two before spawning?
Yeah a have made a lot of spawn because i was not sure if all the jars would stay healthy and survive.

It's getting cold here, like consistently 9c overnight. My sub tubs for outside are still colonizing woodchip. Should I put them outside now or when they are fully colonized?

Some people put a top layer of soil, but I don't.  You do not need to soak the woodchips before hand if you are watering them regularly, but it would probably help.  Lots of spawn is good, just make more pots.  I've got all kinds of strawberries and blueberries going with azzies in them.  If you run out of space you can always take that spawn to a park or whatever and dump some in woodchips you find.

A few planters with different woodlovers.

The bottom two-thirds of each pot is filled with soil and the upper 5-6 inches is either wood spawn or pasteurised wood chips with a jar of grain spawn.
