yep. this is certainly a factor.  I have grown my share of PE and have avoided mutants: avoid overly nutritious substrate, I like horse manure as an ingredient.  Keep the spawn ratios down (more grain is more nutrition). consolidation time ...

this is a good thread

How long would you recommend letting your jars consolidate for?

You want to consolidate your bulk substrate not your spawn jars. I usually let my PE consolidate until they start knotting. I have never had a mutant problem with them.

You have no idea how much you're preparing me for my monotubs.

My jars are grain spawn jars so there is no consolidation ... they go into a bulk substrate or G2G when thy are 100%.

consolidation is: giving the mycelia a little more time to digest the substrate before fruiting.  I give mine about 3 days after 100%.  I don't want to let them sit too long before they get FAE.

I've had two jars sitting at 100 for a few weeks now, just put them in the fridge.
Won't affect my flush right?

I have always consolidated longer than most people. 3 days is kind of the standard. Just find what works for you.

my monotubs are so covered with condensation droplets when they are finished colonizing .... I want to get that excess moisture dried up with FAE ...

so I am nervous to consolidate longer than a few days (fear of stale, moist conditions)

Mine get a lot of condensation and some pooling but it has never caused me any problems. My subs generally knot within 5 days of full colonisation anyway. Like I said its all about finding what works for you.

A casing holds moisture and creates a humid micro climate at the surface of the substrate but if it gets colonised it just becomes part of the substrate making it more important to have your tub dialed in properly.

Is the object to have the casing layer fully colonized before fruiting conditions? Or is it 100% colonization > casing layer > a few bits of mycelium poking through casing layer > fruiting conditions.

I've always read that cubes don't need a CL and that CL's in general aren't necessary so I'm just now researching. This thread is very helpful. Thanks all!

I case at 100% and go strait in to fruiting. That's when I case which isn't very often.

Just FYI, this information is horribly out-of-date. If you look at more recent threads, you'll see that the norm for a lot of people is a substrate of just coir and water, and whatever layer they put on top to cover exposed grains (casing/pseudocasing/whatever you want to call it) gets applied at the time of spawning.

I personally see no point in using gypsum or vermiculite in a substrate. Both are mined substances, and vermiculite is also not good to breathe in and horribly energy-intensive to produce. So in my view, they represent pointless environmental destruction, expense, extra work, and health risks. I eliminated both from my coir substrates years ago, to no ill effect. Vermiculite does help absorb excess moisture, but if you get your moisture content right, then that's unnecessary. I am of the opinion that gypsum does more or less fuck-all in substrates.

If you're using the search function to get explore the forum, you can limit the date range of your searches. I'd recommend starting with the past 4 years or so. If you're looking at random threads that pop up at the bottom of the page, beware and check dates before you put too much stock in anything. 10 years is a LONG time around here.
