This tub was cased with peat and it got fully colonised within just a couple days.

The fully colonised casing did fine.

If your tub is dialed in for lots of FAE and you rely on the casing for its microclimate you will see poorer results.  If your casing becomes completely colonized before the pinset is in you will need to dial the tub or FC in accordingly.

I thought a reason people did casings to get away with higher FAE

It holds higher RH at the surface allowing you to give your sub more FAE without drying it out.

then why poorer results pasty?

Because if you getting a lot more FAE than a standard set and forget mono would provide, your surface RH will be lower if the casing is fully colonized. No microclimate at the surface means fewer pins. If your fruiting in a chamber, mono or GH that is already dialed in to hold a higher RH then there is no reason to case (unless your doing PE).

ah it sounded like you were saying too much fae is what was causing the casing to become fully colonized.

 however I have noticed that some cultures will colonize more aggressively with high FAE believe it or not. The trick is to ensure absolute full colonization before you even think of casing. You want that veg state to have shifted to fruiting.

I have found some cultures like my PE clone are ravenous and will tear threw anything you throw at them no matter what.

So, if the casing doesn't colonize, then higher FAE is allowed because the casing will provide that micro-climate that we want. If the casing becomes colonized, then it's technically not doing what a casing is supposed to do anymore, so we treat it like there's no casing at all. Is that right?

I don't think I do tho....:crazy2:
Is this the basic gist of casing: Casing is a way to help maintain optimal rh at the surface of the substrate during fruiting conditions? Also helps prevent the substrate from drying out from evap too, right? But this all goes away if the FC is properly dialed in/maintained?

A casing holds moisture and creates a humid micro climate at the surface of the substrate but if it gets colonised it just becomes part of the substrate making it more important to have your tub dialed in properly.

What they're saying is if you have a casing layer it creates the same micro-climate that the rolled verm on a cake produces, helping to keep the subs moisture. In order to evaporate this you'd need to allow for more FAE but with so much moisture already in the tub you don't need to mist or fan. If you don't have a casing it's like not rolling your cake, not necessary but it helps keep some of the moisture in.

Unless I'm wrong too?

So, if the goal is to create a micro climate, how come bubble wrap isn't used or recommended more often? I could search but... :stoned2: damn I'm tired too.

Can you or anyone answer me this then... How does the microclimate help control pinsets of PE or KSSS then? What does the microclimate do to help the fruits look normal of those "strains"?

edit: if I'm being one big noob pain in the ass and you are tired of these noobish q's, it's cool. I'll have to find out on my own.

I really think the reduction in mutants has more to do with the extra consolidation time associated with casing.

I had read that mutants were also caused buy an over-nutritious substrate.

That's where the consolidation time helps. It allows the mycelium to digest more nutrients before it gets put in to fruiting conditions.
