Put it in a ziplock bag or even just leave it in the bucket. It won't contam.

Add a little water to rehydrate or will that probably be unnecessary?

I just cased 2 PE tubs with CVG a few days ago and the myc is really tearing through it. I'm not sure if I should let it go or what other options there are. Do you mist/fan with these casings?

Did you case and fruit? Or case and leave in colonizing conditons? To case with coir I find you have to pay attention to your culture and how it behaves. Aggressive cultures do better when late cased or at least cased thick (0.5") and fruited. Slower cultures can simply be cased at 1/4" and fruited the next day.

I fruited it 3 days after casing. This is my first time casing a tub with CVG and when I grabbed it out of the bucket (leftover) it was still at field capacity, so no re-hydration. Next time I might use Jiffy or try this again and fruit it earlier. It was pretty thick, at least 1/2 inch. It's probably 80% colonized right now.

Yeah with coir you want to give it about 3 days after full colonization then case and fruit immediatly. Don't leave it in colonizing conditions or it just eats the whole thing.

Shit yeah that's what happened. Do I just let it do it's thing from here then?

Pretty much.  Dial it in as you would an uncased tub and it should still produce.

I was thinking of patching it earlier but it was growing too fast and aggressively, I'm sure it would have eaten right through that as well. Thanks for the help maybe I'll get it right next time!

oh i do too as it isnt' around all year here and i don't' go out of my way for it with cvg whatsoever, just pointing out that it isnt' a useless thing to use in casing layers and helps alot with peat/verm/lime:super:

I use peat, verm, gypsum and lime in my casings.

Also, I knew the gypsum acts as a pH stabilizer, should have mentioned that too and not said that it wont make any difference; I was just pointing out that it isn't required.

me too.  i've been adding oyster flour and perlite recently though, and cutting back on hydrated lime, so Ph never goes above 8

i don't add gypsum to my casings either, just substrates and sometimes grains.

Big difference between PVGL/PVL vs CVG in yields? I have KSSS and heard it could benefit from a casing layer so I was going to do CVG but if PVL is a better casing then I can hit a store around here for that. Got plenty of time while they colonize their jars

Provided the casing does not overcolonize and is able to provide the micro climate there will be little difference in performance. Comes down to preference. Peat casing can also be overcolonized just as easy as coir but often requires buffering. So I prefer coir for most things.

Peat based casing that was cased and fruited immediately. Still got consumed.

I have used both with similar results but coir is easier. There is a higher contam risk with peat moss and it needs to be pasteurised and PH buffered.

Yeah with coir you just take it right out of the bucket of leftovers. No pasteurizing necessary

Dayum. Is there a difference in performance when the casing is colonized?

potting soil casing

pinning but the casing is almost fully colonized at this point

this ended up getting fully colonized and it almost looks like trich but

that's what I got out of the good culture the rest of them just side pinned and were poor performers. but the casing layer even fully colonized seem to work just fine

If your tub is dialed in for lots of FAE and you rely on the casing for its microclimate you will see poorer results.  If your casing becomes completely colonized before the pinset is in you will need to dial the tub or FC in accordingly.
