The Divinity of the Mushroom
    #2908595 - 07/20/04 03:18 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

God seems to be a very fundamental theme that people experience on higher doses of mushrooms. Considering that mushrooms basically lets the subconscious bleed to the conscious it cannot be denied that God is something very fundamental within the human psyche and the possibility of certain mushroom trips having divine influence cannot be ignored when said trip changes said person's beliefs from atheism to a belief in a higher power. Thoughts?

Opinion, not fact.

it cannot be denied that God is something very fundamental within the human psyche
Poor discussion technique as it certainly can be denied and I am doing it.

and the possibility of certain mushroom trips having divine influence cannot be ignored
Same as before. It can be ignored as sometimes these influences lead to madness and death.

when said trip changes said person's beliefs from atheism to a belief in a higher power.
*same tired old ground* There is no measurable difference between shroom takers and non-shroom takers that was not there before ingestion; i.e. certain searching personalities are more likely to take psychedelics.

The only study done on this was of 28 seminary students in the Good Friday Experiment some 40 years ago and they were already believers in God.

Some people encounter "demons" of various types, while under the influence of mushrooms (and other psychedelics).

Does that mean that mushrooms are satanic?

Also: some people encounter "God" on any number of substances. Trying to say that mushrooms are special in some spiritual sense, "more special" than the other psychedelics, doesn't make much sense when the other psychedelics can produce substantially similar effects!

If it can be denied then it can be discussed. Why do you deny it? Explain. Take for instance the atheists that start believing in god through near death experiences. Explain that, is it because they just needed something to hold onto before they died? Or because there is some sort of hidden knowledge of the existance of god.

As I said, if you can deny it you can discuss because you obviously have reason to believe otherwise.

i was referring to a resent trip report a buddhist now believes in god because of her experience

Also, I realize the post is "divinity of the mushroom", as my last post, I didn't mean that the mushroom is actually divine.. i was just trying to get people to be interested by the post

For fuck's sake Swami! When was it ever understood that to be divinely inspired meant to let go of those ever popular words that children, for some reason, can't hear.. for some reason i dont remember saying that i was divinely inspired by the mushroom

Dont worry, from what Ive seen so far, swammi doesnt really beleive anything, he just likes to offer another side to each opinion, even though it doesnt really matter to the origional poster.

Have you done the mushroom? If you have and have not experienced something divine, then why would you make a case for it and its undeniablity?

The only thing I claimed was undeniable was that the knowledge of God was part of the human psyche ... I never claimed its divinity was undeniable. I was merely posing the question, can god influence one on a psychedelic trip?

Well, mushrooms simply open up your mind to higher levels of consciousness and allow you to see things which people label as spiritual.  Just because you can see either God or the devil on them does not make them either Satanic, Godly or whatever.  They are nuetral.
They are Magic Mushrooms which may be used like a tool to contact spiritual forces (as they are labelled).  Remember, people have always used mushrooms in rituals to make spiritual connections between people and divine conscious.  And there are many substances used like this, I don't think anyone was saying mushrooms are more divine than other so-called divine plants and drugs.

The title of the thread "The Divinity of the Mushroom" led me to think that the poster was singling out mushrooms as a "divine tool" of some sort.

There is really no "proof" that mushrooms (or any other psychedelic, for that matter) causes "higher" consciousness in humans. It may be that it causes nothing other than altered consciousness...and perhaps this alteration is even to a lower form of consciousness!

You will be divinely inspired only if you look for divinity. The mushrooms are a mirror of one's own beliefs. That does not invalidate the experience, but if you are a true atheist mushrooms aren't likely to change you.
