For a roughly 60 quart tub. Would you guys say ~3 inches is a good sub depth or is that too shallow?

Don't use bags. contaminated air can get in anywhere. or it could be the spores that have bacteria. BUT yea #2 & 3 looks good to me I wouldn't use anything other that coco coir and vermiculite as a bulk sub. that just me personally tho cus, and someone pls correct me if i'm wrong but coco and verm can't necessarily contam your grow.

#1 you can do as you wanted to and just use them as cakes in a chamber cus if you don't break it up they'll probably have a better chance to fruit as long as you don't see mold id rock with it.

also can someone explain that people have an issue with bacterial spawn? like it still grows shrooms.

It can if the spawn is compromised/weakened...

#2 might be able to top fruit but that IS bacterial...if broken up I don't think it would recover (before it blooms).

Spawning grains jars to bulk is stressful for the mycelium since you are basically breaking it apart and it has to grow again. When spawning to bulk we trust our healthy myc to colonize the substrate faster than competing molds etc. If your spawn is bacterial or has other contaminants, the myc is already weak and chances are other molds will colonize the substrate faster than your weak myc can recover from the spawning and colonize the tub.

This is my issue with this conversation. There shouldn’t be anything else. It should be Coco. There should be any Triche or molds in there. And what you’re mixing in with it shouldn’t have that.

If there is coco that is contaminated with Trichoderma, I would like to know what brand it is so we can all avoid it.

How much desiccant per jark, what is the ratio?

And when i'm already here, can i after i dried them put them in a refrigerator?

Give me your storage method that is reliable 100%

I'm asking this because i effed something up in the process, they turned out bendy even though i did all right by paper.

That depends on the size of your jar, but two or three should be fine in a regular size jar.

Hi,

Is there anything I should do if I inoculated with too much spore solution? It's my first time, and I've just done four half-pints with a little over 7 ccs. I know 1cc is recommended per jar, but the syringe was hard to control.

Should I just leave it? I don't see any excess of the solution in the jar.

Thanks

QQ: Where can I get something equal to the discontinued Ziploc twist lock PP5 containers? I'm looking at Pasty's straw tek, so I'd like to get some pint or quart sized ones. They are pretty hard to find on the zon, e bae, etc. and I'm not sure about any of the similar items.

That shouldn’t matter. As long as it isn’t ridiculous. That’s just more contact points. It might colonize a little faster.

Just look for the symbol on any Tupperware at the store. Odds are they are PP5. Just get small ones.

Word, I might need to hit up some restaurant supply places if the grocerey store doesn't pan out.

How do you use syringes instead of scalpels? Also I literally didn't know charcoal was bad to use for agar Knight. I received a petri dish and transfered to charcoal plates should I be worried?

I have a handle I’ve taken from something useless and attached a syringe needle to the tip. Don’t have any picture available but it’s as easy as it sounds. The mentioned bent tip is also a nice touch

I’d like to know why this thought is logical in a non-sterile environment. You have spores and other things flying around you and in the substrate constantly in a non-sterile environment.

If you have clean spawn, straight coir will not contaminate, simply because teichoderma needs nutrients. The nutrients will already have been colonised by the mycelium, thus not enough nutrients available for the trich.

I have a hard time accepting that coir for i.e. reptiles, with added trichoderma, will perform differently than coir without the added trich. There will be trich there either way.

Please correct me if I’m wrong.

Many coirs have foreign materials whether negligence or accidental. Which can be the trigger for bloom...

First,  24hrs 165ish°F.  Remove the second you turn it off. my girl kept turning it off (you know the imagined worries women haven) and would have to start it back up.

The desiccant with indicators are a good investment. If they don't have it I will toss new ones in to dehydrator, to make sure they aren't counter productive.

If you want to get fancy, do like the canna-Bros do, argon purge containers. Keep in dark containers.
The fridge i don't feel like will make any difference unless it's super hot and humid there. But your airtight container should already keep humidity out.

When should you buy a flow hood?

I’ve been taking this little hobby pretty seriously and I have a few uses for a flow hood. But a good ones expensive lol.

How many just run a SAB and are just fine?

I’ve ran like 15-20 plates with a Sab no contams but my last 3 plates  contamed bad. Made me wanna max my credit cards out and get a flow hood 😂

I know 3/23 isn’t a bad number but it made me realize how one tiny mistake can ruin everything. I feel like whatever this green mold spore is is also inside my sab. And I don’t want that so I might just make an entirely new one 😂 I’m sure I can sterilize it and I’m being dramatic but 🤮

Pic of said green mold that plagued my plates:

Is a flow hood required for 100% or close to success rate? Or can you get good with working in a SAB and not deal with contams?

It's not required and I bet there isn't a true 100%

It'll require a different technique. And practice.

But if you have multiple uses you say. ( mycology, electronics, phone repair,  edibles)
It allow easily to up your game with bags.

Don't need to go best of the best at first. Rarely is accruing more debt (especially in this economy) advisable for a little hobby.

Mold spores are everywhere! Take SAB to kitchen or bathtub Antimicrobial soap and warm water with a sponge.  Air dry in the lab...keep arm holes closed when not using.

A flow hood is not going to be a substitute for skill

It's easier to work in flow, and I'm certainly less tense when doing anything

But all best practices still apply and you can still easily introduce contamination working in front of a flow hood

I love mine, but it's definitely not a requirement
And there are some very accomplished cultivators in here that have used a SAB with great success

Tldr: flow hood does not equal 100% success
