reminds me of the time my dad tried to replaced a tire on an old VW beetle and it had some clip that was left over after changing the tire.

my dad shrugged and said good enough ill figure it out.. whelp he sat in the car put it in gear and the moment it moves the wheel falls off.

the small details are important:cop2:

I have a feeling that something is a bit icky with my pf cakes.

First image is about 12h before other two (at least they are growing). The stems look a bit too brown to me. My search efforts have resulted in Verticillium, excess moisture, too humid, it’s okay, etc. I popped a few more days wholes in a bag and will see if anything improves.

Can someone pinpoint easily what might be going on?

How long do I keep patching my casing layer on PE tubs? I'm using 50:50 verm/peat with gypsum and lime. The casing is about a little over an inch thick at this point and I have been covering any mycelium that comes through with more casing for about the last 5 days... I can see a few primordia/pins on the side so I'm hoping there are many more under the casing...

This is true af, and I have to admit it may have been something I've struggled with. Not bc of consciously picking and choosing, but bc I read something, went to execute the plan maybe a day or so later, but I did so without going back to the write up so I just carelessly did the parts that I thought I had the experience in and then...oh wow. That didnt really work. I urge anyone doing something new to be conscious of falling into the trap of thinking you understand the broad strokes and then neglecting to go reread before implementing that new approach.

I'll embarrass myself if it means helping someone avoid getting in their own way. Ive been running shoeboxes for the last 4 months or so, but made some cakes for fun. Back in the day, it was the SGFC, so this is my first water tub. I clearly fucked up balancing conditions here, and there's a 99% chance that continued reading would have saved me. Obviously not a big deal, but I was looking forward to using these as a leap off point for some other varieties. Be thorough when taking a new approach is all I'm sayin.

Can you take some pics that aren't through the plastic and humidity? It's totally fine to open your fruiting chamber for a quick picture or 2. Your passed where it needs to be sterile and we can't hardly see through that plastic with condensation on it.

I've been experiencing parafilm cracking and tearing on my agar plates lately for some reason. I just got done inoculating all my plates and decided to double wrap my plates with parafilm to stop the tearing.
Is that okay? Would the mycelium be able to breathe with the parafilm being doubled?

I always use two layers (for that exact reason). If you're using the 2 inch parafilm, it's convenient to cut just enough to wrap around once with some overlap, and fold in half before wrapping to get two layers.

I'm having a hard time sourcing quality mason jars where I live. Only brand name jars is from Le Parfait. They have a 2-piece lid, but no ring. Is there any way to even use this jars?

Drill 2 holes in the normal lid; make 1 hole an injection port, and the other for gas exchange(?)

One can use any kind (well not really ANY) of jars.

But maybe I get your question wrong.

Those Le Parfait looks OK. A bit too expensive for my taste though. I reuse used mayonaise, peanutbutter, pickles jars, etc.

How come you don't use the ez unmodified lid tek for your lids?

I see nothing wrong with those fruits.

Pro tip:  If your mushrooms are fruiting, LEAVE IT THE FUCK ALONE.  Do not interrupt your mushrooms with your burning insecurity and need to take action.  I know it feels better to do SOMETHING, but most of the time what you need to do is nothing.

If you’re not sure what to do, then ask here before altering what you are doing.  Wait for advice from a TC.

There are not pins under the casing, pins form on top of the casing.  It is side pinning because it has been ready for a while but you keep messing with the surface conditions.  You are making them take longer by continuously introducing material that needs to be colonized.

Thanks for the reassurance! And for reminding me to not fiddle with things too much. Slight case of hyperfixation, probably will get easier, or finds something else. 🙃

When pressure cooking jars, does the temperature on the stove top matter in terms of optimal jars?

Like, when I am bringing it up to pressure, is it ok for it to be at a higher temperature? Or is that going to cause for overcooked grains?

Normally I raise get it to venting/15-16psi at around a 7 or 8, and then once it reaches pressure I bring it down to medium.

Just wondering if there have been good tests on this.

The temp reached inside the PC is what matters, and that is going to directly correspond to the pressure level.  Your burner setting isn't going to affect how "cooked" they get.  Most all of us start on the high end and drop it to around med-low to maintain pressure without burning off a bunch of the water level.

As long as your jars are up on the trivet and not in direct contact with the bottom, shouldn't matter at all.
