Re: Marijuana Abstinence Support Thread [Re: Cory Duchesne] * 3

I am not giving it up forever, but cannabis has been extremely maladaptive for me for years. It has felt like it has kept me in a state of relative stagnancy, rather than growth. It even started to increase my depression, something it had never done before - I'd use it as a self-medication for depression and it wasn't doing that job.

So I have quit for the foreseeable. I've only gone one day now. Been trying to quit a while, and recently I really thought through why I wasn't able to do it. I had a talk with myself - saw the negative effects - and realized that the change would happen not from setting some artificial goal, but from making a decision deep within myself. I had to want to quit, to want to change. And now I think I finally do.

I am working on improving my mental health and weed made this very impossible. It held everything still. Maybe one day when I have made great strides I could use it with some benefit, but as it stands all it was to me was a way to compound my problems, an enhancement of the quagmire.

No matter the deleterious effects, my mind insists I should NEVER give up weed or any other intoxicant forever.  It seems to be soothed by the hope that some day I can return to the intoxicant that I know causes me harm.  No, no, never give it up forever!  Maybe someday I can get high and it will be OK!  Maybe!  Oh, I hope so!  Keeping the option of future using open is like only fixing one part of a leaky roof.

I think to quit addictions, they need to be replaced with something, and that will be incompatible.

This is a very good point, and I think it definitely suggests something to be guarded against: allowing a promise of 'future use' to just restart the addiction cycle.

For me personally, I think it helps to not think of drugs as single-minded things, to recognize their complexities. I can recognize that there were times in my life when cannabis has been helpful, times when it is was pleasurable, times when it enhanced my life. It was my abandonment of using it at the appropriate times, of keeping it within limits, that made it turn into just a bad thing for me. But in the future, if all conditions of my mentality was different, how I'd approach the drugs would be different to.

I can allow myself the possibility that, when I repair my mindset, I might be able to use drugs without dosing higher and higher, more and more frequently. At the moment I can't. But I recognize there are some toxic parts of my mindset that lead it to be this way. And I don't blame cannabis for that, it's a drug without any moral quality good or bad. My mindset has been toxic, and the drug has teamed up with my toxic mindset to be self-harm. But my mindset might yet be repaired. And in the future when my mindset is repaired, if I can get there, I can imagine that I wouldn't even really anymore desire to use drugs to such an extent that I push away my own judgement.

I know that some people get sobriety by the AA-type mantras, saying that the drug has made their life unmanageable and that they can never be near the drug again without losing control. I respect this, and I recognize that my life has been unmanageable with drugs too. But I reject their notion that one will always be unmanageable around drugs, that one has to treat it such that one small whiff will send one into a spiral. This seems like a self-fulfilling prophecy to me. I want to be able to use some drugs, especially mushrooms, with moderation. And giving up weed for me is a desire to promote the value of moderation within me - acknowledging that I've lacked self-control with it for a while now, but not trying to appeal to god or something else as a way to say I'm *never* going to have true self-control (which I feel AA does).

Instead of the AA mindset these two ideas are fueling my sobriety: first the idea of debt. Having used cannabis excessively for years, I will continue to deal with deficits months after not using them. I have to restore this debt before thinking about using cannabis again - and that'd likely be many years, to restore the balance caused by years of misuse. Second, I think about the reason for use. For years my reason for using has been to numb pain and cope with life. Right now the idea of using drugs for pleasure is unthinkable for me; and so it is not possible for me to use them in the right mindset, and I'd have to substantially improve psychologically before I even could have a right mindset.

The inner voice of addiction can live on and rest easy if the chance of future intoxication remains a distinct possibility.  One popular AA slogan is "Today, I will not take a drink. I may be tempted to take a drink tomorrow — and perhaps I will."  Which is why people who embrace the self-image of an "alcoholic" can remain terrified for decades, as they constantly work on their issues with alcohol, and see it as a lifetime project instead of a change in their lifestyle choices.

Ain’t smoked in three years and never thought I would ever stop. Lowkey only thing that got me through it was acid and shrooms, so if y’all get second thoughts try a way to look into yourself if you can: safely and intensely. Worked wonders and saved my life

For me psyches never stopped me. They aren't a magical cure.

I stopped smoking weed when I personally wanted it. You have to WANT to stop

Oh I agree absolutely; I don't mean to insinuate they're a cure-all. I can only share my experience with it, which is one out of the many with an addiction problem.

I feel like its gotta be noted though that 100% abstinence may not work for everyone, and if other drugs are utilized more as tools rather than as cure-alls, maybe more will find peace in sobriety. Does that make sense? I meant to say that I personally wanted to stop but couldn't until I utilized those drugs as tools to help me do so, and now I'm even around weed smokers all the time and don't crave.

It's all relative though, like any other mental health problem, what's a tool to someone is a weapon for another to further harm oneself. Ever read Dopesick? Not weed-based but crazy informational about opioids and addiction as a whole.

It (marijuana-cannabis) will slowly make you more and more incapable of handling life situations. Marijuana slowly makes you incapable of handling many things. After sometime, slowly you are the same person who now gets agitated and irritated by every little thing. You cannot handle anything properly. When life demands something out of you, you will see that you will be totally incapable. (Sadguru)

This is absolutely rubbish, maybe that's your experience so you should preface your statement by saying it's your opinion.

My mind is a lot more clear when I'm (mostly) free of Cannabis.

Nothing wrong with using it once a week or so. I prefer edibles these days. Just need a low dose and you get a nice little buzz all day long.

I'm currently taking a break from it completely, but I'll eventually get back on the weed wagon.

Feel you on the clarity thing TrancedOutBrah- not that I don't appreciate the mental space of vaping my beloved arizer all the time but for I do notice an undeniable loss of clarity when I've dove back into the wake n bake whirlpool. Although, more often than not I see that as a feature not a bug.
Questionable willpower sometimes has me 'misusing' it rather than enjoying it.
That ends up pissing me off, because it's such a blessing when I use it mindfully that on the slim occasion that I DO go dankrupt, I've often found myself reminiscing all the wasted/excessive bowls that do nothing to boost my high other than the habitual enjoyment of tokin  those times bring the less desirable aspects into stark focus for me.
Got to that point again recently blasting concentrates after some family troubles so been on a tbreak since sunday there. Initially was 100% set on blazing on friday but as it approaches I'm considering stretching this one out longer and seeing how I get on. We'll see but TBH this tbreak has been easy as fuck.
Loved weed ever since I first suckled upon her glorious terpinated teat and will never stop entirely. It's always my own attitude, rather than the plant that I understand to be the issue, I think I probably just have to leave off the concentrates except on special occasions or something- my best mate developed CHS years ago and that shit is GNARLY, fucking around with unbalanced cannabanoids seems to increase the risk a lot.
:happyweed:
:peaceout:

:edit 09/08: had about 3 weeks off, was good but really enjoying vaping again :vaped:

You once said that disciplined use of drugs can increase your intelligence.

Timothy Leary:
I didn't say that. I think marijuana, for example, makes you stupid but sensual. I'd certainly be the last one to pass laws against marijuana. I've watched many of my friends and loved ones become more erotic and dumber-just going around with a glazed expression on their faces from their last orgasms to the next-and I found them really quite boring. It was a great tragedy in my life that this happened to me personally. You're trying to get me to endorse drugs, aren't you?

What happened to Bob Marley as a child?

Virtually kidnapped by his absentee father (who had been disinherited by his own prominent family for marrying a Black woman), the preadolescent Marley was taken to live with an elderly woman in Kingston until a family friend rediscovered the boy by chance and returned him to the village of Nine Miles.

Adlerian substance abuse counselors have a good understanding of the prolonged grieving process that marijuana dependent clients' experience. He compared the loss of a loved one to the loss of marijuana for the dependent client. The intensity of the relationship must be validated despite its paradoxical nature.

I haven’t smoked in quite a while I don't want it interfering with my schizophrenia medicine.  Plus I just don't want to be high anymore.  I truly miss it though and want to enjoy it but I just don't like it anymore either so even with out the schizophrenia I wouldn't be smoking. If I still enjoyed it I would have a hard time stopping don't honestly know how I would if it wasn't for my schizophrenia.

It's so interesting how you notice you don't enjoy being high now - yet you wish you could enjoy it, and you miss it, and you still want to get high.  After decades of drug abuse, I am fascinated how my mind distorts reality and I question if I truly ever enjoyed being high or drunk or tweaked on meth or whacked on crack.  My mind tells me I had a lot of "fun" abusing drugs, but I now suspect that is misinformation.  Notice how people who are 500 lbs. talk about how much they love binging on food - yet when you watch them binge, they don't appear to be actually enjoying themselves.  Not at all!

The mind is a spooky strange place
