My Exercise, Motivation, Ass-Kicking-As-Required Thread
    #2685577 - 05/16/04 03:37 AM (19 years, 10 months ago)

I've decided I'm going to start exercising and I'll be using this thread as a way to keep myself motivated since I visit Support here at the Shroomery alot.  Ass kickings to get my butt in gear by other Shroomerites appreciated.

Exercising History:

I used to exercise all the time when I was a teenager.  Back then, it was just about losing weight and being skinny to meet the social standard.  Now it's about being healthy and feeling good about my body.  Also I always feel better on the inside when I feel great on the outside.

Goals:

My goal is to be consistant with my exercising.  I have a tendency to make excuses as to why I "can't" or "shouldn't" do something, and it does nothing but hold me back.  By making this thread public, I'm holding myself accountable now to get what I need to do done.  My goal is to exercise every single night doing: crunches, lunges, push ups, and jogging.  If anyone has any other suggestions as to how to exercise in the home, feel free to mention!

I think that's it.  I'll be returning to this thread periodically to post updates of my motivation and progress.

Ok I have some pointers you might already know but here they are.

Well, I started doing what your doing about a couple months ago. I'm still doing it but I was over-exercising myself. Now i'm hurt so I have to wait a couple more days before I can start again. Really this isn't an excuse. If my body tells me something I listen and react to it. If my back or knees start to hurt I have wait a day or two until the pain is no longer there. I'm in no hurry because I know my goal is long term and I'm not expecting to see drastic results. The only thing I do see is me accomplishing my longterm goals. For some reason I can't think "forever".. so I psychologically trick myself into saying this goal will last 6 months and I will renew it until then. LoL, don't ask.

Well, what is your motivation? My motivation is my willingness to succeed. I promise myself that I will succeed in any goals I set. I have been taking everything I say seriously and now I have been completing goals right and left. Whether it be doing homework before a certain day or taking a certification before a certain month.

What helped me motivate myself to make exercise goals? Well, I like yourself want to be healthy and lose some weight.

And for the exercising. I would suggest that you begin one thing at a time. Since you want to achieve a long commitment goal you shouldn't be overstressing yourself. So maybe you should start out by just running for two weeks to a month and then start slowly incorporating a new workout "goal". And remember you want to make this a new lifestyle.

Ok now for the "excuses" part. I solved this problem by setting a minimum standard as to how long I run. I told myself That I need to run atleast 3 minutes a day in place or outside. I said that because I knew no matter what I could accomplish that goal. I didn't stop at 3 minutes unless in need of time but often I was going much longer. After everytime that I completed my daily goal I got such a great feeling and knew that was one more day closer to completing a goal.

Ok, you should set up a journal and document your goals. Make goals one goal at a time and when your ready step up to a new goal. You don't need to write in your journal everyday either. Just write in it when you feel you need to or when your going to make a new change in your life. Sometimes I write in it when i'm feeling moody.

When I write my goals down it feels more concrete and "yes, this is what I want changed in my life". So I told myself that I really wanted it. So whenever I write a goal down i'm my journal I take it Very Very seriously. And really when I don't want to do something I always think of how miserable I would feel if I didn't accomplish my daily goal.

Just remember that because they are longterm goals you should take your steps at a comfortable rate. Nothing should be "hard" about this. This shouldn't have to kick your ass and make you whimper away to your husband. Just think long and slooooow process. And, after a while you won't have to psyche yourself into thinking positively. =)

Thanks guys!

Today I walked for over a mile and did 60 slow crunches with my ab-roller in various areas of my stomach.

I would have completely forgotten to exercise at all if it wasn't for seeing this thread.  I feel refreshed now, and happy, despite the fact that I only did crunches.  Tomorrow, I will be adding leg-lunges to the routine.  The day after that, push ups, the day after that, leg-lifts, etc etc.

Later in the month, my husband and I are purchasing a treadmill too, which I will use religiously.  I can't wait, because I've always thought treadmills were fun.

damn, you're doing good, Elle! Keep it up then. Remember to keep to your routine too.

A treadmill would be cool but I always used the road. That way I had an excuse to sleep in when it rained. Maybe I need me a motivationical thread.

Well, I almost didn't exercise today, but then I thought, "The only thing stopping me is me," and then I knew that I had to do it.

So I just got finished!  I'm pretty breathless...lots of crunches and leg-lunges.  Lunges are a bitch!  But the burn feels great.

It's only Wednesday, don't start slacking now, ok?

So how's the exercising coming, Elle?

We didn't hear from you yesterday. Are you backing off?

You can't let yourself get soft because the older you get, the harder it is to get back in shape! If you don't stay at it, you may lose that girlish figure!

And what about energy? You've got to keep your energy up by staying in shape. Please don't get all slackish now. We're counting on you to set an example for us to start working out.

Don't let us down!

OUCH!  *rubs her ass*  Not so hard, guys!

Yep, I've been keeping up with the exercising!  Except I didn't do it yesterday because I had to carry things up and down three flights of stairs for two whole hours and afterwards I was exhausted.

Oh, and today, we're buying our treadmill!!!  I'm excited...I can't wait to take a run on that thing.

Wow, my treadmill rocks!!  I'm exhausted, but in a good healthy way.  I did 30 minutes of intense walking on various inclines and even that tired me out.  Then I did 65 crunches with my abroller.

In short, I'm very encouraged and satisfied right now.

Awesome work!  Starting is always the hardest but it gets much more fun as you get into it and start to see results.  For my excercise contribution I have been walking about 5 hours a day for my job and climbing a bunch of stairs.  My buttocks are firming up from their former tofu status.

Can exercising kill you? I did the "cardio" program on my treadmill this morning and I feel sickly and feeble now. I'm still breathng hard. Maybe eventually I'll get better at doing the "cardio" and I won't feel so dead afterwards.

UPDATE:

I've been doing my exercises steadily now.  The only days I've missed doing them was when I went to go see my family for a few days.

I'm so happy we got that treadmill.  Kevin has been doing them with me, every day which is awesome because we can encourage one another.
