I did my first batch of Agar using Bods Tek, same bottle and everything.

When I opened my PC I noticed I could smell malt, and the water used to steam had become cloudy.

This seems to indicate that some of the agar solution came out of the bottle and into the water.

Does this mean my lid was too loose? Did that compromise the sterilization?

Edit: Guy's need a LC Jar lid a Air Exchange Hole ore is a Syringe Filter enough?

Thx

Any size is good for LC.  It just depends how much you want to make.  I like to only fill mine half way or less, so I usually use larger jars on the rare occasion I do LC.  A syringe filter is sufficient for LC.

Guys, I cant figure out what I'm doing wrong here, but its always this little gray POS...if this was riding on the plate that I used, then I might as well just quit, bc that plate looked pristine to my eyes. Work done in verified laminar flow, never hovered above my work...I just told my gf the other day that if these jars contaminated, I was in trouble, bc I cant find anymore holes to plug in my technique. The quart jars have unmodded lids and I must've fucked the dog and not loosened enough during sterilization, bc theyre a bit warped and difficult to turn. Any chance my lids are at fault? Im 99% sure I can discard my copium idea of that being weak myc, though would be funny if it was bc I've tossed a lot of shit with that slightly grey shit on it. I've Never seen pics of that being passed off as myc though, so I won't kid myself.

It's unlikely that it was your PC cycle, since mold spores die pretty quick in the heat.  It's probably getting in when you inoculate.  It could be an issue with your lids.  I don't have much experience with unmodified lids, but if things are warped and the lid isn't getting close to a full seal all around, it could lead to contamination.  Even having it unscrewed a little too much could potentially be a problem.

One thing I wanted to point out is that you talked about not hovering over your work.  That's perfect for SAB work, but in front of a flow hood you need to be thinking about "first air."  You don't want anything getting in between the flow and your work.  It's basically the same thing turned 90 degrees.  I don't know if that's your issue, but it's something to keep in mind.

Hi, and what is the reason for a syringe filter at all???

The syringe filter is mainly for some minimum amount of air flow.  It also makes it so you can close the jar lid all the way when you PC and it can equalize.  I think you can get away with using an unmodified lid, though it may need to be one that doesn't seal too perfectly.  Of course if you do that you likely still need to loosen the lids before you PC them.

Not in my experience. Every PC cycle I've ever run has ended up smelling like whatever was in the PC.

Great! I poured plates with it so I'm happy to hear that.

Was it an obvious amount less?

Overflow usually caused by  cooling/de-pressurizing too quickly.

Lid just barely needs loosened...

@callmehippie
It looks like bruising to me...especially if your were finger fkin it a bunch.

If it starts to recover in day or two it's good👍

The aromatics are carbon based and infuse into the water. When media boils over and out it is obvious and you can see the snail trail and everything is very gunky.

The water becomes cloudy because the ph changes from heating up and tends to crash out all the calcium and sodium and other metals.

What you describe is perfectly normal and you did nothing wrong. Good to go.

I have used media that did spill out during the cycle to no ill effect. Take that as you will... Again, you would see spillage. It looks gross and is a mess.

Would you say these are bacterial? I noticed a few funky spots today. Tried agar to grain for the first time. First 3 pics are jar 1, last 2 pics are jar 2.

Hey all, despite a vigorous shake of my LC, when Inoc’d grain with 5ccs to grain, I noticed the syringe has no visible mycelium in the remaining 5ccs.  Is this LC now completely useless, or might there be any use whatsoever for it other than the trash bin?
Thanks🙏

There's still Microscopic strands that you can't see.

Flick hard (harder than a dog's nose kinda flick) next time as well as shaking the ever living fk out of it will help break up the the matted clump.

The amount of condensation is a little concerning. It is a little foamy on top and although fully colonized there are a couple bald spots.

I would send it. I'm sure you'll get at least a first flush. The myc might even wipe out any contam once it hits bulk sub and air.

Cubensis mycelium won't wipe shit out, that's just false info.

Getting a flush is not related to the mycelium winning some mythological fight against evil.

Contaminated is contaminated.

Fully or mostly colonized sub will prevent some bacteria from continuing to grow.

I've seen you make the same statement a dozen times probably in the Natalensis thread.

Here's a quote about cubes tho:

Bacterial spawn, you'll probably get a flush but you should use agar next time and clean up the culture before going to grain.

Cool thanks for the advice. I was worried about the condensation as well. I've got a mini inflatable monotub (about 44qt) and I've got a bunch of shoe boxes.  I'm sure it's probably personal preference. But I could have higher chance of success rate if I break it up into shoe boxes as opposed to Throwing It All in One tub right?

I would put it in smaller tubs at high spawn ratios. 1.5 pints spawn and 3 pints sub in each shoebox.

Mix the spawn and 1 quart sub together and top with 1 pint just sub and level and pack down.

How are we looking 👀 7 days into 100% colonization? I cut slit in sides 7 days ago and just cut all the way through to do hoodie tek.
