Re: Ask Quick Questions, Get Quick Answers [Re: AspectOfTheCreator]

Quick Question: So I'm learning to grow and have done a fair amount of research from this site and from other sources. All of them seem to say the same thing... after fully colonizing grain to bulk in a monotub (which takes ~10 days to 2 weeks pending species, size, etc) everyone says "Now put it into fruiting conditions."

So from all my research ALL this means is mist the top of the cake, side walls/lid, and add (filtered) air flow... right? There's literally nothing else that seems to change, or am I missing something? Should I increase/decrease temp if I was colonizing at ~75 degrees F, or just keep it the same? Assume Golden Teachers since I know diff species can mean diff things.

For me it feels like "fruiting conditions" would hint at a different temp, but I think I'm just over thinking it...

With cubes, putting it into "fruiting conditions" usually just means a slight increase in FAE.  In many instances you won't even need to do that.  It depends on the surface conditions of your substrate.  Misting is also something you only do if the surface conditions require it (no beads of water on the surface).  Misting the walls is NEVER something you need to do.  There's also no need to put filters over tub holes.  Temperature doesn't need to change either.  If you're comfortable, the shrooms are comfortable.

BTW Golden Teachers is a variety, not a species.  Cubensis is the species.

:whathesaid:

Most people just mix the spawn with substrate and give it enough air to fruit from the start.  Once the spawn/sub is mixed in a dialed in tub, you literally just wait for fruits so you can harvest them.  No airflow differences, no misting, no temp changes, no anything...just sit back and LITFA then watch them fruit.

If you haven't decided on a tub tek, I highly recommend PastyWhyte's EZDials for set and forget fruiting.

QQ for the bag crew: I'm trying to stretch my process with the rudimentary equipment I have: for the first time running a bag 4qts of grain in a 6qt PC and inoculating it in a SAB
I want to avoid the bag-in-the-sink-with-the-SAB-on-top-shenanigans so I'm gonna punch it with a LC syringe bellow the filter and put micropore to cover the hole. My question is: When pulling the bag from the PC, the bag is in vacuum, I folded the rim 3 or 4 times and used 6 clips to close it... but can't seem to get rid of the vacuum  (not enough air passing through the filter?)... will I run into issues if I inoculate it as is? of course leaving the filter unobstructed...

(sorry, was not a quick question after all )

Thanks for the reassurance on my research, I do really appreciate it.

And yes, I'm aware of the species scientific names =).

Tip I picked up from shevanels bag tek is to wrap the top of the bag around the bottom of a clothes hanger, tape it and hang it overnight. Has worked really well for me 👍

Still new here. I keep having people tell me it depends on how clean my spawn is. What constitutes clean spawn? Does that just mean it's completely free of contaminants?

I got a few bags that I inoculated with LC. And I did not test the LC as I did it before I found out about this website.

The bags seem to be doing fine. however I know it's impossible to tell until I open it up and get into it. So my question is if the bag fully colonizes and nothing is contaminated. Does this mean I have really clean spawn?

Does this mean that the untested LC is clean and good to use? Are there any other factors other than contamination that make a spawn clean?

Is is accurate to say a PC is not truly Vented until there is only steam coming out of the vent? That seems logical to me but I consistently see people just saying they set a timer.

Yeah that’s the goal. I think most people just go by a timer because it’s usually well past done venting by 10-15 minutes.

Mold is usually pretty easy to see, but bacteria can be much harder.  You can't really see it directly so you have to infer it from what you can see, mainly the condition of the mycelium you're growing.  If you were testing your LC on agar you would see the bacteria form little pools.  You should do that so you know if the LC itself is clean.

If you post some pics when your bags are fully colonized we can help you to determine that, though it can be hard to get clear pics of what's happening in the bag.  Don't assume it's really clean just because it didn't turn 6 different colors.  New people always assume everything is perfect so long as it's white.  That's not always the case.  You can still get mushrooms from bacterial spawn, so it's not the end of the world if your spawn isn't "really clean."

That is true but you can't see when it's all steam no air coming out.  You can see if there is some steam coming out, or not, but that's about it.  That's why you should just set a timer.

Let’s try this again, except with adding the picture. Any thing good here? It’s from a mss but I’m used to LC which seeks to be more obvious to my rookie eyes. GT

when pcing pint jars does it matter how i stack them? also are the lids on loose or tight? i do foil over lids either way but wanna make sure im doing it right

If there not modified lids make sure they're backed off at least finger loose. I still loosen them even if they're modded lids. I just pooped a quart jar the other day having the lid cranked down and didn't double check I guess

I stack them so one jar from the top row sits on 2 bands of the jars on the first row.

Quarts (of grain) I stack the top row on their sides.

From 6 - 8 o'clock is a little whippy but organized from a visible starting point.

Maybe around 2 o'clock? The whole top portion is crazy. Did you just squirt spores in there?

You actually can see if it's all steam coming out and you can kind of hear it as well.

I turn my main kitchen light on and no range light. I can see the shadow of the steam on the wall behind the stove. I can see it from a few feet away. I can watch thee shadow come and go as it gets close and the after the last few spurts of air the shadow is steady.

You can also see the steam but using the light and shadow is easier for me

Thank you for that! I’ll give it a go and try to clean it up on agar. I typically try to squeeze 1 drop out and then gently roll the solution around to evenly distribute it trying to not touch the edges obviously. Tell me there is a better way because I don’t feel this is it!

Drip a drop of your MS/LC onto an inoculation loop then use the loop to streak the plate in a zigzag pattern.  This will help seperate the colonies and make it much easier to pick out healthy growth and see which colonies are growing faster.

Read the HHG. A lot of important info is in there including a proper way to streak a plate with spores or LC.

I have limited experience and conflicting information, but my APE spore syringe is on the way, along with two Boomr bags, one grain spawn bag, and coco coir.

I plan to use a 64 qt tub with polyfill-covered holes, a black plastic liner, and tape over the filters during colonization. I’ll inoculate the grain spawn in a SAB, store it in my closet at 70°F with minimal light, and break up the mycelium after it spreads a few inches. After full colonization, I’m unsure of next steps.

I have a 10cc spore syringe (using half), a 3 lb grain bag, and 10 lbs of substrate. I plan to try both Boomr bags and coco coir, despite warnings against manure.

Once the grain spawn is mixed with the substrate, I’ll let it colonize, remove the tape, and use a humidistat and humidifier to maintain humidity. After that, I’ll expose it to 12:12 indirect light and lower temps. I know APEs take longer to fruit, but I’m unsure about the best time to harvest.

Any advice on potential issues would be appreciated. Thank you.
