Shipping grains is way too expensive unless you're buying literal truck loads.  Just buy whats available from the local feed/grain supply store.  Hydrate it properly and PC it according to the container size and it will be fine.  The type of grain typically won't effect contamination rates as long as it doesn't have fungicides on it - having contaminated cultures is what causes that.

Use whatever is cheap and available locally.

There's too much focus on grain type here vs actual correct prep.

I guess that's why corn kernels and brown rice is frowned upon because of the fungicide issue?

I'm surprised shipping grains is that expensive, found a few places selling it for 2 dollars a lb not including shipping. I can be supremely lazy when we it comes to hunting down things down locally because I never seem to have luck.

Like when I first started this hobby I went everywhere up and down this stupid mountain trying to find coco coir. People said it's in pet stores, in Lowes, in Walmart. In your local gardening store. I looked everywhere in every store and couldn't find it. So I just ended up buying some organic coco coir brick from Amazon. 😶‍🌫️

Quick question. So my first 'series' of grows I used as grain Wild Bird Seed, Brown Rice Flour in some jars, and oats for a few jars and yes corn kernels for a few jars too. I'm experimenting for myself to see what's fastest to colonization, what's most likely to contaminate, etc.

The one I haven't tried yet was Rye grains or Rye berries. Does anyone have a go to brand if Rye grain they order online, or do you all source it locally? Thank you! 🍄🤩

What colonizes the fastest is a strong clean culture on well prepared grain.  How you do it has a lot more sway than what you do it with.

Corn and rice are generally not used because the prep is much more difficult. Rice clumps up, and corn is hard to get fully hydrated and not be soppy wet. Rice being primarily the staple of humans worldwide, is pretty spendy compared to other grains. Also the sugars in corn are a bit fast without much chew.

That being said, all grass seeds work for spawn, millet, corn, rye, kamut, oats, all of it. Cubes aren't that picky. Some seeds like red millet for example have more enzyme inhibitors in their hulls/skins and various levels of silicon in different arrangements which can retard or even halt altogether the growth of the myc.

Available, easy to use, and cheap. With proper technique all grain types are equal and there is no grain that will contaminate easily compared to another. That boils down to technique 100%. Sterile is sterile.

Here is a cube culture fruiting off of uncut rye simmer water. It's a good example of both wetness and nutrient being out of the norm.

Feed oats are usually really cheap and easy to use. I find oats easier than most to prep.

Poured some agar. Did a pretty good job. No condensation. Inoculated, got growth, lots of condensation now. Enough that when I put them on their sides they form a small pool. Any thoughts or suggestions?

First you'll need a clean clone culture to run this experiment and then you'll find out it doesn't really make a difference it comes down to your prep and as stated above some are trickier than others.
You may notice pop corn colonize a jar faster than millet , but that's simply surface area , you will have far more mycelium in a jar of millet and far more inoculation points.

Yeah I'm ready I haven't got to that point yet as this is still my first grow in my entire life and my monotub hasn't fruited yet.  The alternative was waiting 90 days to access the marketplace or trying to find a cube out in the wild (not around here I'm not).

I'm T+2 days now since full colonization of my tub and trying to patiently wait for pinning. But I got the stuff to do it when it's time, I've read the appropriate Shroomery topics and wrote the right stuff down in my mushroom journal.

For my first time the best I could do was order from a Shroomery sponsor that has been around the longest, and I also as an indulgence ordered one dreaded liquid culture from a separate Shroomery sponsor. They both have seemed to work out, fortunately. We will see if I can get over this last hump to see my monotub and shoeboxes start pinning any day now.

I did not think of that, re: inoculation points. Makes sense though. I'm glad to see I didn't do anything too stupid testing out all these grains. Few times I mentioned I tried corn too in any capacity people are like slapping their palms to their foreheads lol.

I swear I have done the reading about everything good and bad, I'm just a natural tester. I like to see for myself and add to the data points.

So far I think everything worked out (yes, even the three jars of drippy corn experiment) since the jars all colonized without any noticeable contam and they also fully colonized the monotubs and shoeboxes without any contam so far.

I had of the 18 jars and 6 bags [don't kill me also two UB bags on the side] only one contaminated outright, one of the UB bags. This single bag caused a big accident in my grow room which involved lots of blood splattering all over my SAB and grain jars and somehow nothing else got contaminated with the trich that spilled EVERYWHERE.

So yeah I think I'm person 599000900 that found out for himself the hard way never to use UB at least. But hey now it's a cute story to tell! 😶‍🌫️

What would cause side growth like this? Just bad luck? I usually have some side pins but they never get this big. Usually abort way before.
I followed Bod's easy AF cheapest way tek and it has worked really well and never seen anything like this yet. Just wondering I'd there's something I can do to help prevent this. And some guidance on what to do from here. Thinking of digging the coco up around that area and just let them grow from there.

Big farm community here too (my neighbors moo), but Oregon is out of control with inflation and prices on everything.  Prices are increasing so fast I literally cannot budget

Same here, but ironically millet is $43 a bag here.  This area is not known for wheat production, but it's available cheap for some reason so I'll buy it :justdontknow:

if fruiting a clone, how different are spore prints from one fruit to the next in terms of stabilization?

if you fruit a clone and take a tissue sample from any of those fruits it is all the same as any other fruit from that spawn? and/or the same as a transfer.

selecting one fruit to clone from each ms grow, then taking prints from every fruit of the clone grow, mixing them in one solution, growing it out and selecting a clone...

open air non sterile grain inoculation/colonization for outdoor?

I've seen contam spawn and jars grow outside with no worry about contam, wondering if i can take a bucket of grain, soak it outside , introduce some spores, myc or LC/LI and cover it with a lid or towel and let it colonize skipping all pc or pasteurizing etc?
