Many of us were raised on piss beer. Mich Golden Light and Special Ex were my go-tos. I wouldn't touch that shit with a 10' pole now

Hey guys, I'm struggling to get spores to germinate on agar, and was wondering what issues the condensation in plates causes, if any. Most of my plates ended up with at least some, and some were bad enough to create wet spots on the agar. Ive got 9 streaked plates left, 4 of which were done on 7/12, the remainder on 7/20 and I've got no growth. The print isn't even 2 years old yet, so age wouldn't be an issue, right? Someone said they've had old spores take a long time to germinate, when I asked a related question before, but I feel really unsure of what's going on right now. I ordered more spores today from a vendor, but I dont want the same outcome with those, so I wanted to know if the condensation screwed me, I guess. The second time I poured, the bottle measured 125f, so I thought that would be cool enough, but apparently not. I feel like I'm screwing up here...

Edit - I think Ive figured out part of the problem anyway - it looks like the plate should be stored upside down if theres a lot of condensation, and then the water can be poured out once the plates are being opened when you do your work with them. I haven't found yet what exactly the negative effects of the water on the agar would be, but I have to assume its going to interfere with the intended outcome. Leaving this up for others to find - I had a hard time finding the info while searching, but I'm not great with search filters either.

I ALWAYS have condensation in my dishes, so yeah. I store em upside down. It's a pain in the balls admiring them all inverted and whatnot, but not enough to make me change my agar prep I guess

No, he fucked up. Fucking Beefy.

Shouldn't really be any difference between grains tbh. Millet, wheat, rye its all been the same over here. On their own or AIO Muda bottles. Same with agar recipes, although I did notice just dextrose on its own always produced really thin myc but it grew just as fast as grain water+dextrose, MEA, MYA

Also, crack's no prep millet is my jam. Always perfect. Been meaning to try flash prep what with Stipe having a thing on it and Pasty going on about it on Munch's Q&A but no prep is just too easy

The main thing I’ve heard that seems to throw people off is when they are first getting into millet. There seems to be an arduous process for people to find the right brand. A lot of it uses an antifungal coating that they don’t even tell you about.

That’s why I think the wild birdseed works great because they don’t coat wild birdseed because they’re gonna feed it to birds.

I inoculated a 5 lbs all in one grow bag and I think I want to transfer it to a tub once it has colonized. I’ve never done this before so can anyone tell me what kind of substrate I need to buy, and how much. I have a 66 quart monotub I can use unless you think that’s too big.  Thanks in advance

No. If they are cubes you don’t need an actual casing.

Coir will do just fine

Question about coir's nutritional value, as I'm picking up two different views.

On one hand people say it has virtually not nutritional value, which is why it's used as a casing layer in the hobby/industry.

Other people are treating it as a bulk substrate, which implies the mycelium feeds off it, which it's happy to do because it's all lignin at the end of the day.

Grain & coir seems provide such great results that the current consensus is not to bother with straw and hpoo etc (partly out of practicality, which you can't really argue with).

So the "quick" question is, is the following take correct?

Coir has no almost nutritional value, and using it like a bulk sub gives great results because of its other qualities (water retention, structure, air flow) and this works because the bottleneck to yields is not nutrient availability but another factor (either water availability, or some other aspect of subsurface environment which affects the mycelium's ability to produce fruit). The confusion about the mycelium "feeding" off coir likely comes from the fact it colonises it, whereas it's really just growing  to extract the moisture.

If coir outperforms straw or hpoo, that's because those work the same way, in that their contribution was never nutrients but structure and moisture, and coir simply does a better job at that.

So in summary, a bulk substrate is not and never was about adding nutrients, but creating better structure while the nutrients come from the grain.

And lastly, the reason you don't really need a casing layer is because coir is already doing the casing layer's main job of improving water retention. The reason you do need a casing layer with straw is because that's a lot less dense than coir, and will lose water too quickly.

And after lastly (just to push my luck on a quick question): a coir pseudo-casing layer on top of spawned coir contributes by ensuring there's no grain too close to the surface, which helps, possibly because the mycelial growth in that layer is of the "reaching to the surface" type, rather than "suck the life out of these grains" type?
