I ran out of aluminum foil, is it a dumb idea to PC my pp5 containers for no pour inside of a quart mason jar with a cracked lid?

It’s actually a great idea

The jar might fall over if you don’t weigh it down with something.

sounds like you might be onto something. you want the steam to be able to enter the vessel (jar) and purge all latent gases from the inside, without having something melt or explode. allowing just the steam alone to sterilize every surface is crucial for proper cycles.

Sweet! I didn't even think about it tipping, I'll wedge some jelly jars in there. I was thinking cracking the jar like unmodded lids would allow for sufficient steam sterilization. Fingers crossed. Thanks!

The only concern here is making sure they are backed off enough in the first place. If you are going the unmodded route, you need to back off slightly more than 1/4” or more. I have run into this problem multiple times where the lids weren’t backed off enough and they pulled a vacuum.
Once it pulls a vacuum it’s there. It will suck in all the surrounding air when loosened.
Be rigidly OCD about every last detail in this hobby. Paying attention to them in tandem with diligent research and a wealth of cultivation experience is key.

I didn't think about a vacuum; that's a really good point. Thanks!

i actually do this with all my no pours. i’ve even used modded lids all the way tightened. seems like the gas exchange hole is good enough for sterilization, maybe bc of the liquid being easier to sterilize than solids, but i haven’t seen any issues.

Fiddy knows what he's talking about. He compresses with fully body weight and I do too. Eliminates most side pins and myc seems to love it too.

Damn, full body weight? I haven't put to bulk yet but going off beefs tub write up he says firmly but not with all your might.

I stick an empty tub on top and put as much weight on it as I can. The better it's packed the less side pins you'll get. I have NEVER used a liner</font></font></font>

welllllll i said that becuase guerilla literally broke his tub lol .

Nats bag has finally finished colonizing. Also I’ve learned my lesson, never using one of these pieces of shit again hah. Anyways, can I get some help on what I’m looking at here on the top? I opened it to some yellow water drops and black dots.

Looks like its a goner, sorry. The white, spikey erratic puffball growth is a surefire sign of infection. the yellow water is metabolites released from the mycelium to fight off its main environmental stressor, the bacteria. Likely the mold set in not too long after. I'm guessing those dots suddenly appeared without opening the bag?

Yea black dots were there when I opened it. I kinda figured this one was fucked but I still wanted to learn something from it. I thought the puffball growths were because of lack of FAE tho?

no that type of growth is indicative of the presence of bacteria. fluffy growth can be fine, but spikey and erratic is usually toast.
Looks to me like tghe myc is dying off and allowing the aspergillis to gain a foothold.
Tie that thing up and put it in the trash outside.

Could this be aspergillis too? This one’s been open two weeks with seemingly no pins

My purchased bags looked like that too.  I futzed around with them for a while, but they only got uglier from that point on.  Trash or compost, sadly.

I'm almost doing a little double take here.
Your surface moisture looks ideal but I really think those black flecks are some sort of aspergillis, maybe.
