What type, if any, gourmet mushrooms can be grown using the PF tek, and water tub method?

What do you mean water tub?

If you're trying to grow gourmets low tek I'd just buy a bag of spawn and go cold pasteurized straw/sawdust as the substrate or something like that that doesn't need to pressure cooked.

PF Tek's main advantages are in it's low susceptibility to contamination when starting from spores which just isn't really applicable to gourmets, will be a waste of time.

Any tips for stacking 2 FFU's on top of each other? I'm trying to speed up inoculation and the height limitation with XLS bags slows things down quite a bit.

My FFU's have brackets in each corner so it may not be able to sit flush but any suggestions are appreciated. I can't mount them to the wall as I'll be using them in a grow tent.

Otherwise I may just set a single FFU on a 4" block to make it taller but that's not ideal.

Thanks!

So I'm getting into edible mushrooms and thinking of growing blue oyster and I hear that oyster mushrooms grow fast and fruit alot. I also hear they are very less prone to contaminated vs. magic mushrooms. What's your experience In This? Is there any teks? I tryed the search bar but it seems there is not a good tek or much info compared to magic mushrooms. Any help would be great.

Oyster mushrooms are very easy to get to fruit. And very difficult to get to fruit well. They want lots of fresh air exchange and lots of humidity.

Otherwise you're often going to end up with tiny caps and big stipes and the stipes aren't very good.

I generally do them outside, even though I have a tent.

During cooler weather you can do Black Pearl though, the stripes on them are good so you can do them in environments with low fresh air exchange.

But they like to fruit around 50°

My oyster cultures are more aggressive than most cubes I’ve grown, but I’m just starting with Natalensis and it may be a contender.

Being that I spawn my supplemented 5lb grow bags in a small SAB which leads to not having the best sterile procedure and never having any noticeable contams other than some metabolites every now and then I’d say there’s some truth to them being more contam resistant.

I buy commercial cultures in the form of LC syringes and then back them up and expand them on agar. Whatever grain you’re using for your cubes will be fine for the common gourmets.

Then all you need to pick up is some wood pellets and you’re off to the races, which you can hydrate with the bucket tek and then use extra spawn to act as the nutrition to avoid PCing. Some people grow in buckets but I like fruiting bags in a Martha tent.

Pics? Please!! I'm building a pans tent soon and planning on using a few shelf's as for the oysters and might grow some outside since we stay around 90-100 humidity around here.

This is right when I set it up and before I had it loaded with bags. It’s just a “mushroom grow tent” you can get from Amazon for like $35 then I threw a humidifier and exhaust fan in it. I like the fans and humidifiers with adjustable output controllers on them because it makes dialing the tent in a bit easier. Since then I’ve added a repeat timer into the mix along with the humidistat controller. It’s also just exhausted right into my garage so I’ve also since added a cheap filter to catch spores which is just 4” PVC stuffed with polyfil.

As things warm up I’m thinking about piping the humidifier into the top of the tent so that it isn’t fighting gravity and the whole unit isn’t sitting in the moisture. Will probably mount the exhaust fan on the outside for the same reason. This was just a quick setup since I had some bags ready to go.

Here’s some pics to show ya what’s possible with it. Not that these are insane flushes or anything but I’m proud of them. Grown on masters mix substrate

Those look great!!! How does oysters taste and lions mane? Im excited to start doing it because I want to add it into my cooking. Since I'm doing pans I want to actually do something productive for once 😂. Plus the way the grocery store be charging I'm about to go move to a farm and grow my own.

I’ve never been a big fan of raw or steamed mushrooms but when I cook em down real good with some butter and seasoning I really enjoy em. Great for stirfrys and I actually dig em in sandwiches or burgers. I think I like the taste of the lions mane a lil better but prefer the texture of the oyster caps.

And I feel you on the price of good mushies at the grocery store! Right now I’ve got my price per 5lb fruiting block at around $2 not including energy for running the tent but I’m working on getting that price closer to a dollar. First flush is bringing in about 1-1.25 pounds and the second flush about half that on the oysters but my lions mane culture actually does really good on the second flush. Harvested one the other day that was 12oz. They tend to hold more water weight than the oysters tho.

Gourmets are a lot of fun, I think you’ll enjoy it even if it’s a couple bonus bags in your pan setup 👍

Oh yeah I forgot I saw you in the pan thread!

They do need a lot of fresh air exchange and a lot of humidity but if you're setting up a tent for pans you could grow them in that.

Be aware that the sporeload inside is an issue.

Lol I see you had that issue. So which ones is the issue with spore? The pans are the bad ones or the oysters? I was planning on using small cake pans for pans and cover them every once in awhile between flushes and clean the green house then put them back in weekly.

The oysters. But you can kind of avoid that by harvesting them early enough.  I also had trouble getting the fresh air exchange good with them inside.

My gourmet tent is also in the basement. So the air quality isn't great down there.

I think they would probably fruit in my active tent pretty well. Because it has tons of fresh air exchange and high humidity, and the air quality is better in the room that it's in.

I've seen a lot of people try to fruit them in shotgun fruiting chambers and the stripes were pretty monstrous. So that was kind of my word of caution in the beginning and where that was coming from.

Only one day after inoculating these two Blue Oyster jars with a LC syringe there's growth.

It's my first time growing anything other than cubes, I also have two jars of Enoki.

Finally getting off my butt this season.

Started a mother jar of straw shiitake from LC.  Started two millet jars of wine caps that will go to sawdust spawn for spawning beds.  And started two more wine cap LCs using pokes.

Also did some active work.  Maybe tomorrow I'll get around to doing some lab dishes.
