Jehovahs' Witness Called me Today
    #2861624 - 07/06/04 02:18 PM (19 years, 8 months ago)

Poor bloke didn't realize he was running into a buzz saw. I was polite, but when he stated that he wasn't selling anything, I burst out laughing. "Of course you are!" I thundered. "Does your religion teach dishonesty as a core value?" *stunned silence*

hehe.

atleast your all-around skeptical

You dont just give the kids who've been abducted by aliens a hard time, you give the people who try to put religons on others a little something too.

Swami, whats your stance on religon? Any specific religons you adhere to, or believe in?

Swami, whats your stance on religon? Any specific religons you adhere to, or believe in?

IMO there are only two valid reasons to belive in a religion:

1. By example: its followers live happier more contented lives (based on religious not cultural reasons).

2. The underlying tenets can be shown to have some valid basis.

I know of no religion that meets these simple criterion. (Yoga comes closest, but in its purest form does not require belief in deities or after-life or even chakras, but specific physical practices.)

Swami, are you farmiliar with Taoism? I'm sure you've read into it, since you're quite educated.. but basically, Taoism is simply choosing to be fully aware of the "here and now" at all times. This means not thinking about the future or dwelling on the past. To always think about what you are doing at that very moment.

I think it meets your criteria, but I would STRONGLY hesitate to call it a "religion". It's more like a technique, but one that can be applied to any practice.

It does not require that you change the things you do, but simply that you do then with all your heart and mind. Full commitment of attention to every action.

Any thoughts?

Yes, it has practical results, but is not a religion. One need not even study it to practice it. All great athletes are "in the flow". This is a matter or technique of focusing and no extraneous beliefs are necessary.

Count yourself lucky. Normally they will knock on your door. A couple of them came by once when me and my friends were tripping. I told them I worshipped Cthulu and produced several "tomes of worship" and paintings. They left with weird looks on their faces.

One of my good friends is a Witness and when he tried salvia for the first time he freaked out and began praying loudly for my soul in my parking lot. I get that a lot. I seem to attract religous zealots concerned for my soul. Hee hee.

Well, from the tarnishings that I can see from here, your soul DOES need quite a bit of work.

I love to discuss religion with the Jehovah's Witness', but they usually grow tired of hearing my views on it and cannot wait to leave.

When I was in High School, a Jehovah's Witness called me, and I debated with him for hours. Of course, back then, I still was a Christian, so I didn't have as firm a ground to stand on as I do currently.

"IMO there are only two valid reasons to belive in a religion:

1. By example: its followers live happier more contented lives (based on religious not cultural reasons).

2. The underlying tenets can be shown to have some valid basis."

well, i posted this a while ago and i think it relates pretty well. I consider all of these to be 'valid reasons' to believe in a religion, if that religion can provide these things...

1. many forms of meditation can induce pleasurable, interesting and beneficial states of conciousness.

2. The OBE , or out of body experience, is a real experience that is different from any other form of dream or hallucination and can be achieved by anyone, regardless of faith or religion. (note: i dont know the extent to which this experience corresponds to the real world, but the state itself is real, unique and achievable)

3. Hallucinogenic Drugs are more beneficial to the user when done in a spiritual context, and proper grounding in a spirituality like shamanism can make the differance between a fun but pointless or bad trip and an amazing spiritual one that really leaves a positive lasting effect on your psyche. Not mandatory, but it helps.

4. Belief and adherence to religious/spiritual tenents like "do ontu others..." and "love thy neighbour" as well as belief in things like karma, are beneficial to society and the world as a whole.

5. Having a personal path on which to base ones life and guide ones pursuit of self improvement CAN lead to greater happiness, clarity, and contentment.

6. The value we put on an experience shapes the value of that experience. Example: if we follow society's oppinions, dreams are meaningless, or at least irrelevant to the 'real world'. we are early on taught that dreams are like little movies that play when you sleep, but once you wake up you get on with your 'real' life...

if you buy this, you will often stop remembering your dreams and certainly will not gain the benefits possible when you think of dreams as opportunities for self-analysis, spiritual exploration or simply concious enjoyment. In other words, if you belive dreams are meaningless, they will be for you, if you believe they are the gateway to worlds of inconcievable wonder, they will be for you.

7. Cultivation of 'spiritual' techniques like zen no-mind and shamanic 'stopping the world' have practical real world applications in nearly any activity or field. The underlying systems have been used in japan to develop the worlds best archers, painters, poets, swordsman, martial artists... no matter what you choose to do, zen can help you excel.

Does a healthy religion include one that has mandatory practices of getting on your knees and physically vomitting out "the devil" ?

One of my in-laws is in the ER because he tried to kill himself. He's been in and out of severeal different churches trying to find the one that's closest to Jesus and the last one had the above mentioned practice. He was raised by dogmatic christians and made to believe there was a strict line to salvation and that most of the people in the world are evil sinners. How can years and years of this type of childhood progamming not completely destroy one's mind?

Religious fanatics are so fucked in the head and they're taking the innocent children with them.
So fucked.

Depends on whether or not one upchucks corn chowder or an actual spawn of satan, does it not?

That is nothing but self abuse. That does not have the hallmark of mature religious practice...even for fundementalists that is extreme.

*Cue Twilight Zone synchronicity music*

Just flicked on the tube on Court TV. There is a trial because an autistic boy died during a prayer service where an exorcism was being performed.

Weird!

Aren't they the same thing?

--------------------
The very nature of experience is ineffable; it transcends cognitive thought and intellectualized analysis. To be without experience is to be without an emotional knowledge of what the experience translates into. The desire for the understanding of what life is made of is the motivation that drives us all. Without it, in fear of the experiences what life can hold is among the greatest contradictions; to live in fear of death while not being alive.
