NatureGrl’s grow-along * 2
    #28446166 -

I’ll use this thread to journal my first grow. Help appreciated!

Here (hopefully 🤞) is my first project, lids:

I also soaked white rice (which is going to end up in our dinner) and popcorn.

Does anyone think there is trouble on the one metal lid under the micropore tape? There seems to be a little air bubble, as the metal was a bit ragged from the drill. Should I ditch that one?

Tonight I’ll be cooking the corn, then using the instant pot to sterilize three jars.

Better to err on the side of caution I would take off the tape file or hammer it smooth the reseal with MP.

Yeah I'd get rid of those sharp points, I'd be concerned with them poking through your tape very easily.  You can sand them down or just use a hammer like med man said and smash them flat. :mushroom2:

Were you going to use white rice in your grain jars, or just your dinner?

White rice, as I understand it, doesn't have the nutrients that mushrooms need.  Brown rice can work though.

It turned into dinner when I read the same; not enough nutrition…

I was not planning to eat the rice….but as I researched, I learned the same and about the lack of nutrition did some popcorn instead.

At this point I have three quart jars sterilized and I just made some agar:

I’m thinking I will wait a few days to check my grain jars don’t grow anything unwanted.  Anyone care to chime in with the general timeline for that? I think I recall reading a week. I haven’t read anything about how long to wait to inoculate agar.  Building a SAB tomorrow, but need to figure out what size holes? I have a 3” bit from hydroponics.

I also have a “shroomtek” and grain bag, but have yet to figure out how to get the agar in those.

Summary questions:

SAB hole size
How to get agar into grain bag
How long before inoculating grain jars
Should I skip spore syringe right into jar, and just use agar
Need research on how to store part of my spore syringe for next time if I fail.

SAB hole sizes - 4-6”

How to get agar into grain bag? - Look into the tiger drop.

Grain jars should be inoculated as soon as possible after sterilization and cooling have taken place.

Syringe to Jar or Agar? - I would absolutely put your MSS to agar and work to get some clean myc before noc’ing up your jars with a dirty syringe.

Storage? - In the fridge.

Make sure with your SAB - the dominant hand hole is a tiny bit higher and offset than the other.

Thanks again, I will try that idea.

Here is what I did for agar:

3 g potato flakes
2 g telephone agar
1 g honey (maybe a tad more)
1/2 c water

Boiled and added to pouring bottle. Added 2 drops blue coloring. Lightly tightened the lid, placed on towel in instant pot surrounded by 5 empty jars. Cooked on high for 20 minutes. Let it natural release and hold on warm for 50 minutes.

Cooled to <150on counter. Wiped tools (not the condiment cups) and gloved hands with 70% iso. I used Philly golden teacher’s tek with updraft from 250deg oven while pouring. Stacked to cool, put jar of hot water on the top container which eliminated the condensation.

The instant pot went off PuddinLicious’s post, but I wonder if I cooked my agar long enough…

I guess I’ll find out if I’m a dirty bird…

I would look into a FH/FFU or even using a Bunsen burner.

Oven is SUPER old school and I’m not even sure is a proven method.

Or….using a SAB to pour which is proven 🤷? I used oven method too when I had my first grow kit for PF tek did it work…? Sure but it’s PF Tek so I probably coulda just done it open air and been fine. It’s success I wouldn’t really put onto the oven air either.

Personally I use a Bunsen burner for all my manipulations: agar, grains, liquid culture and it works very well for me as long as I stay within a radius of 10cm around the flame.

All my work is done without SAB or LFH, just a Bunsen burner.

Thank you all for the encouragement and advice!

In my enthusiasm I found some YouTube vids…and the Philly guy seemed solid. Noob/dumbass is my excuse🤦🏼♀️

My first attempt at a SAB was a total fail. Lowe’s only 5” hole saw was $50 and the og reason I skipped a SAB was because hubs doesn’t want me buying a bunch of one time use stuff. (I don’t want to do that either, but he’s a chemical engineer and thought the oven draft was adequate)

Anyhow…I bought a cheaper 6+” saw for drywall and it could not get a grip into the plastic, then hubs ended up cracking the box with a knife. He does not like the idea of melting plastics. So, now that y’all know the details of our marriage🤪…I’m heading back, buying another bin and the expensive saw.

Hoping to inoculate my agar tomorrow.

Have you tried scoring the circle with a new, sharp blade yet?  This is how I cut my holes.

Use a utility knife (there are blades made just for scoring) and using light to medium pressure slowly trace the circle you want to cut, then repeat a few times til ya create a weak, circle-shaped line in the tub.  Then it should begin to break free with a bit of wiggling.

Buy the saw blade, too, just in case.  Lol.  If ya don't need it, return it.
