10 More Growing Myths Cleared Up

1. Using water from your bong will make your shrooms more potent.

This is a common misconception many newbies have when starting to grow shrooms.
Tap water will work but purified water is better.

2. Injecting spores into your moms house plants is a good lazy mans tek.

As much as everyone wants this scenario to work it just doesn't so save your spores.

3. Cat litter is a good substitute for many substrate ingredients.

Save yourself the hassle. Many newbies have tried replacing vermiculite and such with cat litter only to find out later it doesn't work. It may resemble verm slightly but it won't work.

4. Eating a cake that just won't pin will get you just as high as the shrooms themselves.

People have tried this with the result being a trip to the can for a little praying to the porcelain God. Your system just doesn't like vermiculite.

5. Checking on your jars every 15 mins speeds up colonization.

This simply isn't true. They take time. You can spot noticeable growth every 24 hours or so.

6. "Bed-A-Beast" means running next door to bang your buddies ugly sister.

This is a casing material made from coconut husks.

7. Growing in bulk means trippleing your output from 5 grams to 15 grams.

Bulk growing means growing more than a pound at a time. At least a QP at a time.

8. Human shit is a good replacement for cow manure.

Many newbies have had this thought run through their heads. Don't you.

9. Colonizing jars need 90% humidity and 12 hours of light with the fan on.

They don't. They need dark and warm.

10. After growing your first abort you are now an expert and can ask questions on the Advanced Forum.

The advanced forum is for people who have advanced questions.

Hope this clears up some misconceptions. Please feel free to add to this list. We need to help the newbies disspell these myths before they start down the long road to becoming an accomplished mycologist.

I have no clue where you got this....so if I spawn horse dung with WBS and I only get a few ounces on my first flush then what is this considered? Its definately not a cake...but by your standars its not bulk either?

Hey, this post is in jest.  If you are growing with dung and getting a few ounces on a flush I would say you are well on your way to growing bulk.

Cakes can be eaten depending on the contents of the substrate. Brown rice cakes for example.....that doesnt mean verm coated with BRF!!!!!

Tests with distilled water and tap water (from well) have been done and there is NO WAY that distilled is better than tap. colonization was over a week faster (between 2-4 weeks) and more rhizomorphic. also this water was not sterilzed whatsoever. a measuring cup went under the tap and into the mixing bowl.

I knew a guy that drank the water from evil dicks bong....a 3 footer...it had at least a liter of sludge.....dick only cleaned it about once a month...I'll never forget that....especialy since it's on home video.....

hahaha... who grows more than a pound at a time???

bulk growing means using bulk materials like dung, straw, or compost, inoculated by grain or PF spawn.

you could grow an ounce of mushrooms with this technique and it's still called bulk growing.

or you could grow a QP with PF cakes and it is NOT called bulk growing.

I have to disagree strongly with your analysis of number 8. That is total bullshit! Gartz, Stivje, et al have found that the feces from human female virgins who are strict vegetarians produce Ps Cubensis fruit with yields roughly 20% larger than average, with an unusual .56 % psilocin and demonstrating incredible bluing. The main problem, though, with using this material for bulk spawing is locating the virgins, as they are incredibly hard to find. Especially vegetarian ones. Also the resulting fruits were shown to contain, along with various alkaloids, the hormone estrogen, providing the added potential of increasing breast size while shrooming!

IMAO, Number 3 is actually a very ACCURATE "myth". Some friend of mine whose name I cannot remember has used kitty litter many times, with great success, as a cheap and available viable substitute for verm. He or she finds that not only is it an excellent replacement for verm, but it is also very absorbent, providing more available water for the crop, and that the kind with baking soda maintains a well-balanced PH. Additionally, when using the perfumed litter brands, he or she observed that it produces mushrooms that smell just great, with a matching flavor....making them easier to consume!!! And some people find that the cat is willing to use the casing tray during the growing period as a standard kitty litter pan, allowing dual-usage of your "SETUP" !!!

I think that here, timing is the real issue. What you SHOULD do is check on them every hour, and use the REST of the time to post at the Shroomery, asking your questions with titles like "NO GROWTH", "NO GROWTH IN THE LAST 10 MINUTES", "CAN'T SEE NO GROWTH", or alternatively, just "GROWTH???"
