Beatiful Bluhoney! Quite sexy veils on those too... How did you prepare the birdseed? Was the casing layer just the compost? Did the whole terrarium act as the casing, with a perlite layer on the bottom, or did you put a cased tray in the terrarium? What did you do for air exchange?

Yes the humidity was at 100%. But my friend has an aquarium air bubblier hooked up through a hole in the growing chamber connected to a pump on the out side which is on a timer that is set for 30 minutes every third hour. Although it is recieving O2 through out the day, the perlite(two inches thick) keeps the humidity high. They seem to enjoy this enviroment.

The bird seed was simmered until it was plump full of water, then placed in 1/2 pint jars with the lids turned rubber side up and left loose.then they were pressure cooked for an hour. Next the jars were placed in a homemade glove box and with a hepa filter running, a syringe of spores was taken out and the needle point heated red hot with an alchohol lamp. A few drops of spore water was squirted through the tip to cool it, and then quickly the lid was raised and in went 1 cc of spore water. After that the jars were shooken up very much so and placed in an incubater( aliens set-up) which consists of a large container with water in it with an aquarium heater set to 86 degrees was taped to the bottom submerged under water fully. The jars rest in a smaller container with a few holes punched in the very near top for air exchange in side the larger floating in the water. The larger containers lid is then placed on it and my friend puts them in a dark closet and leaves them alone for a week. Then shakes them and examines them. After full colonization, the cakes were broken up (2) per growing container, and mixed with unpasturized compost and a piece of plastic tarp with alot of holes punched in was laid on top of this. Now she placed all this into a dark drawer and left a heating rock on which kept the temps( according to thermometer) around 80. After about four days, the container was taken out of the drawer and plastic tarp removed. It was examined for contaminiants and then placed in a 3 foot by 2 foot by 2 1/2 foot deep growing box( rubbermaid) filled with two inches of perlite soaked with H2O2 and water. A heat rock was added incase of temperature changes. Three holes were melted into the growing box. At each hole was a tube connected to an air stone( fish tank bubbbler). which let air flow down onto the growing mycelia. At the other end of the tubing, the the sections were connected to a three way divider which in turn was connected by one hose to a small fish tank pump, which was connected to a timer. The timer was set to 30 minutes every third hour. The box was set next to a window with a mirror angled to catch the sun rays and send them into the box( old car rear view mirror). Back to the gowing containers that held the compost/mycelia, they were not cased with anything, and the humidity was at a constant 100 percent. The rest ... well you know.:)

Here is a pic of one of the sixth flush samui type. It grew VERY short but wow is it ever big and PLUMP.:) Have any others who use compost noticed that the flushes keep coming and coming. My friend is getting ready to try another experiment. she is going to add another layer of compost to this container with the sixth flush and see what happens.
