Fuck me sideways, why did i had to watch it...

So to summarize: This entire thing was about social media (they got the title right at least) and monetization schemes. Also 5 min discussion why rice is such a great grain, full of minerals and all that. But yeah, is was mostly dudes shooting shit about "makin' money", explicitly or implicitly.

I'm seeing another potential avenue for a little passive income here, with a crusty old shroomery gatekeepers series on Youtube.

Primary topics of discussion:

-How can we watch and mock grifters without adding to their view counts?

-What is the right amount of being-an-asshole to deploy when someone asks why their UB tub is turning green even though they religiously sprayed with H2O2 twice a day, and then argues with the advice they receive?

-How can children of earlier generations navigate the world of everyone-gets-a-gold-star?

The key to success, I think, is to go completely over-the-top with voice distortion and facemasks. I'm calling dibs on T Pain-level autotune and a They Live mask.

I suppose the quasi resistance needs to gather intelligence on the grifter in question in order to call him out? :laugh:

Isn't that the exact problem that people complain about with social media "algorithms", increased negative engagement giving those things even more exposure?

Do the handful of you nerds make a difference? I don't really know but I'm with New Bod on this, I'm not gonna watch any of his things. Frankly it's more to do with how watching his shit will affect my suggested content

I'm not sure we missed anything. Think critically for a moment. People are naturally curious. They frequent this site to learn more about mycology. This site drives enough unique impressions to warrant a whole bunch of commercial sellers to advertise for a minimum of $200 a month, just to have their banners rotated at the top of the portal.

Here, a handful of people are ensuring that some youtuber's name is always on the front page of the most popular forum category on the site. He is getting better publicity here than the companies that literally pay a sponsorship because at least their impressions/ads are rotated out.

Those curious humans are going to wonder, "just who is this youtuber, is he really bad enough to warrant this much attention?", to which they are going to view his videos. As I pointed out above, the ones doing the calling out are also watching his videos, posting links, and driving engagement.

Then, on the back end, youtube is mining each end everyone of these views driven by shroomery's unofficial advertising to harvest out different subscribed channels, search histories, cookies, and friend lists to identify users which may also be interested in watching those videos. Just to further recommend these videos to other people who never even visited shroomery to see this thread.

You think you are hurting him, but have subsequently increased his importance within youtube's ranking and recommendation algorithms as a result. Yet, you think I've missed the point...

You want to hurt him, ignore him and only point out the deficiencies in his videos to those who ask about him. He is no longer getting free advertising by having his name at the top of the cultivation forum 24/7 and every google search hit from shroomery is about what makes him not worth viewing.

Ive never viewed his videos and likely never will, so I'm going to mute this thread so I don't have to see it every single time I log in to read the cultivation forum. Which, in hindsight, was probably what I should have done 1300 posts ago...

I'm offsetting everyone's flagrant views and clicks by never having clicked any ad or watched any shroom video except for RRs which I downloaded a century ago.

My view is that, by way of the algorithm, he's going to grow (his YouTube channel :lol:) regardless, and the minor amount of traffic he gets from this thread is negligible. Sure, not zero, but negligible in the grand scope of things.

I think having this here, with this many pages of reasons not to follow his advice, is much more valuable and makes a bigger difference on people who actually matter: those who feel the need to do deeper research than watching YouTube videos.

We live in a world rampant with propaganda, smear campaigns, and media suppression.  Clearly there is such a thing as 'bad publicity'.  Raw viewership metrics are useless, "ignore it and it'll go away" has never been an effective counter strategy, and calling people out when you don't know what they're saying is just plain stupid. 
Go ahead and mute the thread, it only removes you from the conversation.  :shrug:
