I don't think woodlovers are mean, it was purely my mind being mean this time

I hear you. I don't think of it as necessarily bad though. Maybe that's the wrong word.

These ones are a little mean. (excuse the background)

Woodlovers give me lessons, and sometimes it's the one I need.... not the one I want.

I've also had the time of my life on them!  Everything from standing under a cherry tree in the full moon light and listening to ever leaf in the wind at the same time, to the best sex marathon of my life :awesomenod:

I've also gone into my own head and processed years of CPTSD and guilt, which wasn't a good ride but a necessary one.

I don't have much to show yet, but I'm seeing germination on both plates I streaked!!
Very exciting stuff, already scheming about the patches I'm gonna make in the spring.

Streaked a plate with wild Gymnopilus Sp. spores on 1/30.

Took 5 transfers today. This thread is my ID of them, thanks to Moria841.

I'd settle for lemons, but I'd prefer Gymn's.

Azurescens from Long Beach Nov 2022 spores (drought genetics). Fastest colonizer and bounced back well from shake.

Alleni mycelium collected from Palo Alto Dec 2022 wood chips. Took forever to clean up that sample.

Ovoid from Seattle monster fruiting June 2022 spores.

Caerulescens from spores mailed to me collected from ATL metro area. Kind of wispy on grain, just like how it is on agar.

Cyans clone from stembutts of Dec 2022 Seattle park find. Very fast on agar.

All the cyanescens in a big bag.. just poked holes everywhere to drain the chips.. after 4 days of draining they looked moist, but not wet.. decided to just add the spawn, mix and the holes will provide fae

Apart from that azurescens also almost 100% colonized the chips.. same as the subaeruginosa.. gave them a final shake. However.. ran out of fermented chips, will need to ferment some more  had around 10 plates of leftover azurescens, 2 seemed to have bacteria riding along.. tossed those.. placed some fermented chips in a few jars, added it so some stuff that needed pasteurization. Voila, all genetics have been saved:

Will make 1 flowerpot with azzy genetics from Onno.. and another flowerpot with these cyan genetics from Tweeq ..

So you are just fermenting the chips and then adading the grainspwan after draining for 4 days? And with holes in the bag, isn't there any risk of badly contaminating the chips/bag?

No, clean spawn and you have nothing to worry about.. grainspawn in the jar does need to consolidate a bit though.. if the grain damages during mixing due to the rough surface of the wood, and some bare spot get exposed you will have trich in no-time.. so I mix carefully when adding grain to wood.. then, I don't touch the bags after adding spawn.. until almost fully colonized. If that goes well, I don't think you can mess it up anymore.. stuff will not contaminate. But uhm.. no, apart from that you have nothing to worry about.. chips themselves don't contaminate that fast, broken grains do. (I am not 100% sure though, if I say something which is false, please do correct me  )

Okay, because I am not sure if I should sterilize my bags with fermented chips before inoculating with grain spawn ^^ Got now azzy, ovoid and cyan colonizing grain and the woodchips are now in the third week of fermenting and I just want to get my next step right. First time with the woodlovers.

Edit: going to make outdoor beds in a small forrest right next to my appartement and won't have then in a garden or pots.

Well, I did pasteurize it, after fermenting.. just to make sure the critical part goes well (grain to chips).. as you can damage grains here. You don't need a lot of sterilized/pasteurized chips, just enough to expand to fermented stuff..

I don't see my own shortcomings, so do follow with caution haha! Good luck.. note I spawned to chips in open air, I don't have a flowhood & bags in the sab are a pain in the @#โ‚ฌ&*. Therefore decided to pasteurize instead of sterilize. You could even carefully lasagna layer to minimise damaging the kernels.. maybe.. didn't do that myself, but it's an option

Ah I don't have a FH either ^^ Only a SAB xD So that's also the reason why I wanted to follow your "way", since I would just spawn to chips in open air as well

Is it true, that even if it would get a small contam it isn't that bad since I would be spawning it in outdoor beds anyway?

I personally haven't been being careful about that and also haven't let my jars consolidate all that long either. So far no issues, but I wonder if it depends on the type of grain (I'm using wheat which is pretty sturdy in my experience).

Breaking kernels has not been a problem for me, I really like to put grain right to fermented chips.  I donโ€™t know the actual facts about the relationship between the fungi and the anaerobic culture you get with fermenting, but if there is a relationship Iโ€™d think pasteurizing after a ferment would cancel that out.  I do know the biggest reason for the ferment in my experience is to clear out competitors without using any propane or electricity during sterilizing or pasteurizing.  I see same results either way wether you pasurize sterilize or ferment, I just use each method to meet what situation I have.  If itโ€™s steady over 60ยฐf 15ยฐc I would lean on pasteurizing or sterilizing due to mosquitoes and stinky fermentors, if the chips Iโ€™m working with are older and have a heavier load of other organisms I lean on pasteurizing or sterilizing just to know Iโ€™ve killed everything off, a lot of fungi will live through weeks, or maybe even years in the fermentor.  One cool trick I learned is you can run, at least the geopot brand, fabric pots in a canner!
[u
This is all stuff that was grain right to fermented chips, other than the terrarium I didnโ€™t even drain the chips, just loaded from the fermentor right to the pots or coffee sacks, mixed with dry peat though, and obviously they finish draining in the sacks.
I hate to just ramble, but Iโ€™m starting to turn more towards just putting grain right to the outdoor beds.  I read a lot of people talk about rodents getting into the grain but thatโ€™s not been my experience other than Iโ€™ve dumped some bad grain and the rats who live near that bed seem to only get the bacterial kernels and leave the fungal ones alone.  Even the beds that are years old I can still find kernels.  I do see squirrels bury acorns in the beds, skunks and moles hunt for bugs in the beds but Iโ€™ve never seen any critters going after good clean colonized grain.  Iโ€™m thinking one of the things people see is a lot of critters fuck around with our patches, but I think thatโ€™s got more to do with the fact weโ€™ve got a large healthy organism thatโ€™s metabolizing and creating heat and exchanging gases so bugs nest in the habitat weve made then critters come and snack on the bugs.  At least here in the PNW putting grain outside in the fall during fruiting season seems to make the most aggressive beds.
Cool to see you folks tearing it up!

Wow thanks alot land trout! Love to hear your experiences, since I've heard alot and seen alot of your grows and success

This helps me alot to find my way with the woodlovers and I hope also someday to have my own garden where I can grow these instead of making wild beds^^

Also will definetly try the grains strait to the fermented beds in fall then ;-) Doesn't hurt to have more than a couple of wild outdoorbeds I think
