I do the jar thing, seems normal and smart to let them sit inside there.  I never wear gloves or wipe things down though.  I think those two things are largely unnecessary.

If you've never grown mushrooms before, here's how you start.  First, follow the Updated PF Tek, put 4 holes in jar lids not 1, and use a water tub! 
The next move is Shoebox Tek. After that you move onto grains, agar, monotubs.  Agar is easy, just do it.

The only time I left jars in the PC overnight also happened to be when I resorted to using jar rings to boost my bottom rack up out of the water, because I needed that extra space up top. Of course the vinegar rusted my rings. So, those 4 rings are dedicated to PC usage now!

youre not missing anthing. the tag used to get you better fuel mileage and shave 30 seconds off of sterilization time but that shit stopped working.

I confess
I Wanted it forever; I have been here since before it existed.I have a 4 rating. I have left for years many times. I have admitted more failure and crazy ideas than most best of all I don't have a lot of follow through. When I finally gave up and stopped thinking about it I got one.

It might not mean much but I cherish it. Even if the 30 seconds off of sterilization stopped working.
