Yes, watertub.

Lmfao "trich appeared".... I see 3 different molds

But it is really weird that none are touching the ovoid myc.

There are only 2 molds I can see. Anything I'm missing? And yes, the Trich appeared. The penicillium was there before I even placed the Ovoids in there  I figured it would go to shit anyway, so may as well put that plate to use.

The Trich is technically"touching" the ovoid myc a bit (it started after the Ovoid grew out slightly), but the bacteria may be inhibiting enough that the enzymes can't dissolve the Ovoid myc. No idea.

Hi everyone,

I have a mystery that I'm hoping you all can help me solve. Perhaps it's not a mystery at all and I am just a poor cultivator/detective. Here's my mystery.

Last year I successfully cleaned and transferred nice looking Ps. Cyan mycelium on agar to many grain jars. I used spore prints from previous wild finds--at least two different patches from different areas. Everything went along swimmingly with grain jars colonizing rapidly and showing no signs of contamination. I then colonized fermented alder chips and grew healthy bricks of mycelium which I then seeded outdoor beds in early spring 2022 (March). I used the standard Stamets lasagna method of layering spawn amongst layers of fermented chips and then sprinkled some potting soil in each layer for good measure. The beds took off and colonized rapidly and in about a month each bed which measured about 4'x4' each (two in total) were a solid mass of mycelium. Fast forward to this fall and the beds seemed to have died back with only sparse amounts of mycelium left here and there.

So my question is this: what do you all think was the culprit in starting from a vigorous colonized outdoor woodchip bed in late spring early summer to non-viable bed that showed large die back?

Environmental factors were these: the beds were in a shaded, north facing area with dappled sun hitting it for parts of the day; I kept it moist but didn't overly water it and in fact for most of August it had to fend for itself as I wasn't around to water it. At first I thought the abnormal fall weather got me but it just doesn't make sense how the mycelium seemed to recede after such a strong colonization initially. Here are some pictures of the blocks of mycelium I started with and the beds I made to give you all an idea. Thank you for any theories/thoughts you may have as to why this happened. I am starting new beds this spring with new spores from a vendor and am hoping that this vector might have been the issue.

Outdoors all sorts of things will eat myc. Slime molds, Trich, bugs, worms... Sometimes it just happens. I'm pretty sure the myc is still alive and well inside the chips tho.

I’m in Whatcom as well. I didn’t get out much ,but when i did it was a mushroom ghost town. Even the normal indicator species where nowhere to be found. I had a couple tubs that were just basically forgotten about, when that cold hit, I brought them indoors and that’s the only fruits I found this year. I don’t think it’s anything you did. I just think it was just a weird year all around. I’ve been picking Whatcom county for 20+ years and granted I didn’t get out much this year, but this is the first season since the beginning of my Pickin career that I found nothing. so don’t get discouraged. Some things we have no answers for yet.

Thanks Adas--this is a likely hypothesis. Any of these could have feasted during the summer and eaten back the mycelium substantially.

Thanks nothingschanged--I saw very little in terms of fungi this fall as well--in fact I've seen more pop up after the last snow/freeze than this fall. So perhaps the environmental conditions this fall just stymied fruiting.

Unsterilized Transfer [Re: TheDuder] * 2
    #28139018 -

Sorry for cross posting but didn't realize this thread was still alive.

I found an Azzie growing out of a small branch that was decomposing. I brought the branch home and placed it in a small jar with some damp alder chips. No sterilization was used. The mycelium is now colonizing the alder chips nicely and there is no observable contamination in 2 weeks. Is the lack of contamination a surprise? Can I carefully remove some mycelium and transfer to agar plates or more alder chips?

Damn, beautiful myc!

I'd just take a piece, dunk it in H2O2 (3%) and place it on Water agar. Should work wonders.

Put it to agar and toss a chip in more chips too or even try dropping the branch in a new jar.

Nice find!

Dumping this years tubs into a mix of random shit, mixing then , back in tubs and giving them to a friend. He doesn’t want to put in any work and make a clean dish. Lol, so this is all i am doing for him. I took a load of chips to him the other day. We shall see what happens.

Seconding the point about outdoor factors. I've had a couple healthy outdoor beds suddenly die off/die back in a similar way. What is the landscape like around your patches? I have found (or at least suspect) that some of the coniferous trees in my area - grand firs in particular - tend to host molds in their bark that will wipe out psilocybe mycelium pretty quickly, even if they start out healthy and are on the right kind of wood mulch. Usually when this happens the chips end up stained dark and sometimes even black where the mycelium was originally. Big bummer.

My ovoids are devouring the wood chips/shavings, they probably need some heftier material. These were spawned 9 days ago and look over 50% colonized:

Cyanescens jars are also coming along:

This is going to be a fun spring :sunny:

Interesting points Roostre, thank you. My growing area may host such molds indeed. I have a number of mature doug firs in my yard--not necessarily immediately next to any of my patches but within 20 yards approximately. I will look through the chips in my beds tomorrow to see if there is any of the dark staining you mentioned. I have had success in years past with patches near a huge doug fir so I am hoping this isn't the culprit!

It's still perplexing to me--even if the colonized patch didn't fruit, why would it just die back so much and almost seem non-existent with the exception of a few areas with mycelium here and there.

I also wanted to share an observation/lesson from my cultivating experiments last spring that might be useful/interesting to folks.

In researching different mediums for colonized grain, I read discussions here of using saw dust instead of wood chips. I chose to inoculate saw dust with some of my colonized cyan grain to see how it would go. Well, the grain colonized the saw dust rapidly and in about a month I had multiple gallons of completely colonized saw dust. I was very pleased.

I used these fully colonized saw dust bags to colonize outdoor beds made from fermented alder chips. Both of the beds I made with the saw dust spawn however never really took off compared to the spawn made by just adding my colonized grain to fermented alder chips. Neither saw dust spawned bed seemed to do very well and never really took off--including not fruiting this fall. What is my take away? From my limited one time experiment, the alder chip spawn was much more vigorous and took off faster than the saw dust spawn that just seemed to be slow and peter out. This year I am skipping the sawdust.

Very interesting Nef--since the environmental conditions needed to grow Psilocybe subaeruginosa are interchangeable with places where cyans grow, are folks having luck with starting outdoor patches in areas of the US such as the PNW? Nef have you found cultivating Psilocybe subaeruginosa so far similar to cyans in terms of germinating on agar etc?

An update on my subaeruginosa myc. T2 from my self-harvested spore print is looking much cleaner. Really interesting to see the different genetics coming through in the 3 plates:

QQ to the woodlover pro's:

Just got some beech-woodchips, are they too small or should that suffice for cyans, azzys and ovoids? I would mix it up with a bit peat or wormcasings (ofc pasteurized) to then inoculate them with grainspawn. (first time doing woodlovers so^^)

Or would you recommend an other approach?
