Leaving piles around for to long welcomes colonies of unwanted mycelium. In the past Iโ€™ve girdled trees so i had standing dead trees for future use.  Mixing dead wood, fresh wood, punky wood, blackberry brambles, alder cones    Chopped and chunked, shredded, chipped and all mixed up has worked good. Never soaked but rained on randomly.

Lol I've gotten my share of chipdrops, but they don't exactly dump clean hardwood chips right when you need them. I'm just looking for a 'barrow full or so, not trying to 'noc the whole neighborhood ...yet :grin:

Got some chips fermenting at the moment :grin:.. P..cyanescens are waiting. Apart from that azurescens and some subaeruginosa. I'll add them to the already existing patches, just to add some extra genetics in the mix.

You couldn't pay me to run that.  Chainsaw chains are designed for bars, that thing is an accident that's going to happen.

  I have long hair and one of those with two blades.  Itโ€™s called a dual saw.  Tequila and that little fucker is rather efficient.  Youโ€™d be surprised how straight you can cut.  Later on though it doesnโ€™t look so straight though.  Good enough for a hillbilly.

Tried to get outdoor Ovoids on Agar. Trich appeared, but for some reason it doesn't seem to be harming the Ovoid colony. Could it be due to the bacterial presence? This is very strange and cool. This seems to support the idea that Bacillus could be a protective factor against Trich.

Hi everyone,

I have a mystery that I'm hoping you all can help me solve. Perhaps it's not a mystery at all and I am just a poor cultivator/detective. Here's my mystery.

Last year I successfully cleaned and transferred nice looking Ps. Cyan mycelium on agar to many grain jars. I used spore prints from previous wild finds--at least two different patches from different areas. Everything went along swimmingly with grain jars colonizing rapidly and showing no signs of contamination. I then colonized fermented alder chips and grew healthy bricks of mycelium which I then seeded outdoor beds in early spring 2022 (March). I used the standard Stamets lasagna method of layering spawn amongst layers of fermented chips and then sprinkled some potting soil in each layer for good measure. The beds took off and colonized rapidly and in about a month each bed which measured about 4'x4' each (two in total) were a solid mass of mycelium. Fast forward to this fall and the beds seemed to have died back with only sparse amounts of mycelium left here and there.

So my question is this: what do you all think was the culprit in starting from a vigorous colonized outdoor woodchip bed in late spring early summer to non-viable bed that showed large die back?

Environmental factors were these: the beds were in a shaded, north facing area with dappled sun hitting it for parts of the day; I kept it moist but didn't overly water it and in fact for most of August it had to fend for itself as I wasn't around to water it. At first I thought the abnormal fall weather got me but it just doesn't make sense how the mycelium seemed to recede after such a strong colonization initially. Here are some pictures of the blocks of mycelium I started with and the beds I made to give you all an idea. Thank you for any theories/thoughts you may have as to why this happened. I am starting new beds this spring with new spores from a vendor and am hoping that this vector might have been the issue.

Iโ€™m in Whatcom County. And I agree, we went from hot smokey October to cold and not very wet quick. We seemed to skip fall entirely up here. I wondered if the strange no fall weather was the reason. Not sure. Digging through my patches however shows very little vigorous mycelium especially compared to what I had early summer.
