Hey anybody got a dang ol' ovoid print I could get my hands on? I got one from a trusted vendor and it seems they arent viable or/and extremely contaminated :frown: I got an azurescens print to take to agar and cleaned up so I'm a little sure I didn't cause what I'm seeing. Print might just have been old? Anyways I'd really appritiate some help. A guy on here said he has some and then I never heard back again. :frown: lol

I put 3 ovoid grain jars to a 50/50(ish) mix of alder shavings/smoker chips (not the chunks, unfortunately), 1 jar/shoebox. The jars didn't seem to be colonizing much more so maybe they were bacterial as mentioned before, they also could have been too dry. They smelled good, at least.

Bottom of the plate has some myc I would make multiple transfers from to try and clean up.

Checking on the wild tamed ovoids out on the porch this morning. Looks like they'll end up colonizing every wood chip in the tub by march/april, hopefully before they should start fruiting again. :thumbup: Flipped a few chips over for the picture ^

Some chips on top are looking a tad dry to me, so going to set the opened tub right out in the rain, the next time it showers for a bit. I feel real rain water is actually more beneficial than the plain drinking water I've been pouring in all winter, and might even let it repeatedly flood again, like last spring. IMO they need a good beating from mother nature. 

Thinking I'm gonna transfer a few of the well colonized chips to some fabric pots soon, full of fresh cut alder sawdust/chips. I'm exited to see how far and wide they can multiply this year! :smile:

It sounds like you have that tub outside, do you think they colonize better at outdoor temps? I assumed room temp would be best, but it makes sense that they'd be able to handle winter weather.

im over here chasing squirrels off my patch, they found my nocced up grain under the mulch and keep trying to run off with it before it can colonize the patch.

Chicken fence wire over the patch for squirrel blocking.  My big established patch normally let the squirrels go nuts off the fruiting season and just cover over their dig holes.  I don't like it when they flip chips over that are pinning though.  During fruit time I will prop up the wire fence with bricks stones if the mushrooms needs space.  I've seen some people fruit right through a chicken wire fence too.

My unscientific guess from limited experience is ovoid like right around room temperature to colonize or maybe a little less.

Yep. Outside, but under a roof most of the year. Since last spring anyway, when I added more chips, and started actually taking care. It was pinning by then, which is really what got me motivated to learn more about them. For all I know she had gave me a tub of dirt, you know?




They were frozen solid like 2-3 weeks ago or so. Now its like 50-60 degrees lately. Crazy PNW weather. Probably will be frozen solid again in the tub at least once more before the winter is over. The freeze/thaw cycles actually seems to be when I see it spreading the most. Like they woke up as soon as fall time hit.

I see you guys spawning jars full of grain with ovoid, and how fast the jars seem to colonize, which is crazy compared to how long mine has taken to start ripping into the wood chips. Your guys seem as fast as cubes.

From what I've heard.. having a mycelium that has already been established in the wild might be way easier to manage than new cultures from spores. I think I remember someone saying they might not even fruit for a few years or something too. Don't take my word or luck for anything, because I Didn't even know we had spring time fruiting "ovoids" up here until recently, and just been letting time and nature do all the work since I stumbled onto some. I don't have any answers, but I'm sure I'll have them forever :wink: 




I used a bag of alder smoker chips from the store to expand the original shoebox to.  Now that I did some homework over the last year, I know I can just chip up my own, and soak them for a few weeks. Or maybe even use my instant pot on the warming function for a few hours, to pasteurize some, to try bringing indoors as a substrate mix. We'll see. Outdoors though, no mold or contams I've seen have affected it at all. The whole tub is teeming with all kinds of microbes and molds, and even a few sprouts here and there too. I don't worry because I've seen it eat fuzzy mold right off a chip and some cardboard like nothing.

I read somewhere that they were supposedly the easiest wood lover to adapt to indoor conditions, but came here to find out that's not really the case...


Where: I have acres of alders around the property. Literally watched one fall from the wind storm this morning, while looking out the window. Literally begging me to chip it up.

Gonna fire up the chainsaw and start ripping away at the log soon. Might have to borrow a buddies chipper shredder and run some branches through it. Kinda want to see if it spreads faster through finer sawdust, but trying to be more patient and just enjoy watching it, instead of messing around trying to speed it up like I was.

I have a lifetime source of wood to chip up if needed. Big leaf maple is a hardwood and works right?. Plenty of them around, both dead and alive as well.

Maple works good. Ime even with your rakers filled down, the saw makes to small of chips. Cut the long way on your log and you get shoestring/hashbrown looking wood that works ok. Hatchet or axe does best for smaller quantities. Opinion only.
Around my parts theres so many suitable habitats it’s cool if squirrels or rats move the grain around.

I confess, I work for an arborist company.  I have access to bandit intimidators and a Vermeer BC1000XL :lol:

I get daffy duck greedy on days there's an oak, maple, or alder removal. 

Nice saw, I use huskys too.

I chipped up a gallon or two of doug fir branches with a hatchet which I'm soaking now for when my cyan jars are ready. It was a lot more of a pain than I expected.

Thanks for all the info, PsillySeeEms. The ovoids did move pretty quick once I shook them, I'd imagine chips take a bit longer to digest than some cooked grain though. Looking forward to see some fruits in that tub!

Any concern with bar oil from the saw mixing when cutting it up? I could run it dry, but doubt its a problem until I hear it is. Also I could set up and try out the alaskan mill attachment I got laying around somewhere, and make long rips with skinny planks, and just smash the them up into chips with a sledge hammer. Dust and chips both with a few long cuts. I don't want to mill alder though, but I do want to play with it, lol.

I should probably just borrow a buddies wood chipper, and go to town on all the smaller branches that will fit, that are already laying around by the tons.

I only need maybe 5-10 gallons worth for now, but I guess it won't hurt to spend half a day and get me a bigger pile going. I might need the whole pile by next year when I install a permanent bed. :wink:

The BC 1000xl looks like it could swallow a whole tree at once, haha damn.


Last time i borrowed the 5-6 hp chipper, I converted it to run on propane, and pretty much bypassed the carb issues it was having.. I know it won't give me trouble starting this time, and he like when I borrow his non functioning machines. lol

Here's one of the first fruits I got last spring. I had just added the new chips after seeing the pins, so as you can see, it has taken almost a year just to colonize the new chips in the same tub. I let some of the fruits release all the spores back into the tub too. The rest seemed to abort as soon as they figured out there was new food to munch on, or maybe it was the spores, not sure.

Its more like wispy rhizo looking tentacles in the way it spreads around, reaching across the tub to latch onto another chip. Not all uniform, like it looks spreading on sterile grains like I've seen. Mine have been much slower, but that could be the outdoor environment, the chips, or the way I been doing it.. All summer the mycelium hid away. I thought that's when it would colonize the most, but I was wrong. They like cold weather afaik. The PNW variety anyway..?

A bottom side of a shoebox of yellow subaeruginosa that has been slowly drying for 1.5 months now. A little longer then maybe start watering with cold water and some fridge time at night?
