"...leading to enlightenment in general."

leading imples that enlightenment isnt here now, or that one must do something or go somewhere to attain it.

what can ever be lost? what can be attained?
if we attain something, it was there from the beginning of time.
if we lose something, it is hiding somewhere near us.

if you can't find the truth right where you are, where else do you expect to find it?

this is the purpose

I just dont see why in order to say that buddhism is a religion you have to resort to calling north american's "fake ass white motherfuckers"

Thats just dumb, and belies a total ignorance of what buddhism is about

yeah - with all the foggy notioned ego bashing activity going on, I would say the enlightened state is being suppressed in favour of what I do not know.

one does need to tune in if they feel out of touch with the moment

Don't worry, I'm quite educated when it comes to the Buddhist texts and its adherents, which allows me to discern from the real Buddhist and the "fake ass white motherfuckers".

North Americans have idealized Buddhism and wrapped it in plastic so that it is nice and tasty and easy to swallow. (gulp) The result is the common belief that "Buddhism its not a religion".

North Americans have made Buddhism a mere commodity to be consumed during the commercial break. They've stripped away all the labor involved and opted for a more convenient, hedonistic Buddhism.

However, if you venture off into areas of the world that have been steeped in Buddhist tradition for hundreds of years, you will find it is very much a religion, and that there isn't anything wrong with it being a religion. Its very quaint really, like drinking tea out of a wooden cup whilst listening to the wind.

I have been astonished to learn, by conversation with friends and business assoicates who are humble natural born asian buddhists, that they mostly have no idea about the satipatthana sutta, nor about prajna paramita and have never heard of abhidhamma at all which explains all mental states including supramundane etc.

But these natural buddhists do have statues and rituals.

To most people it is a religion and not a philosophy or science at all.

What is unique about it among religions, is that there is an underlying science of mind that is easily discovered, it admits westerners and easteners alike who want to learn to attain enlightenment, and unlike Kabala and other western religious esoterica which remain hidden until you are almost to old to inquire the underlying buddhist knowledge is actually exposed.

Alot of these replies are opinions, and while ist impossible to not have an opinion about everything, I find that all Buddhism wants to stress is: Dont have an opinion, just SEE, and you will see what IS.

I also found that alot of places mix this Buddhism with other beleifs to form alot of hybrid religions, and thats why there are so many different types of Buddhism.
The best thing about Buddhism is that it allows you to think and beleive whatever you wish to beleive, just, what you beleive, may cause suffering in itself.

For instance: Christianity is an awsome beleif, and it helps alot of people get through alot of pain, but it also causes alot of pain....And most people dont WANT pain! And Buddhim pretty much just says: Pain is inevitable, and no matter what we try to do, it will still be a fact of life.

Anyways, Im still new to this, so my comments are probably easily vunerable to other contradictions, and I may even be completely wrong, and I shouldnt even be thinking the way I just did, here in this post because it will just lead to more suffering later on because alot of people will disagree with me, and that will be hard for me to take, or just frustrate me...

The world is alot more simple than I make it is all I know...

Buddhism is great, its a religion that brings us together, it tells us to strive for our goal no matter the consequences, to beleive yourself and oppose obstacles with a pure heart, a pure spirit even if you think you lose at the time you will win in a spiritual way.

Buddhists can be white, your skin colour doesnt define who you are its just a representation of your physical manifestation. Your spirit is the core of your essence it defines who you are, perfectly.

Can we please not argue and call each other names in a thread to do with religion?, for that is not the purpose of religion, the purpose of religion is to learn to accept one another, including each others beleifs. If you dont agree with someone and you think their wrong keep it to yourself/

Buddhism aint philosphy its a way of life for many.

Im not tellin ANYONE to do ANYTHING this post is just a suggestion and my beleifs nothing more, dont squander your energy opposing it because these are my beleifs, i analysed this world and made these beleifs and i think their right and even if their not i will hang onto them, If im wrong God will guide me to the right path, i just gotta be patient.

Northern Soul i know what you mean about all the Buddhism being mixed up.

Siddartha Gautama was the creator of Buddism so anything written by him will be the core of buddhism. The thing is Buddhism wasnt really written down, it was an 'oral' religion but their is some stuff out their.

You are correct.

Most people belive buddhism to be along the same lines as christianity. Were buddha is the savior and what not. That is completely off wack.

Quite simply buddha was a man that felt there was more to the world then what he could see, and found what he was looking for, and he found it within himself. He found there were 4 basic truths that governed life. They were allways there, he had just discovered them. He had found that peace and sernentiy lies within yourself and the truths.

I honestly believe he did not want there to be such an organization of "buddhism". In a way that is against what he wanted. I believe that he just wanted people to realize that they could break themselfs from theire personal prisons, because they have the power to control themselfs.

I practice buddhism to an extent. but i do believe in a higher force that controls my reality. I do not know what it is, but i belive that by practicing meditiaion, i can channel then energy of this higher power with greater effeciency. To me meditation is a way to re connect yourself with the absolulte whole that simply IS.

I wouldnt call myself a buddhist, i call myself spiritual, using the techniques of buddism, understanding suffering, the end of suffering, the causes , etc... But i also believe in other things as well.
