If you act like you belong there and are prepared for questions from passers by there should be no worries. They are just begging to be found right now. I’m on my way to the Humbolt dunes tomorrow. Never been but it’s a hot spot according to iNaturalist.  If anyone has been putting off hunting their spots, I would get out there!! Good luck everybody.

Finally found some Cyans to add to my cultivation project starting this year. I had found a good amount of P. Allenii 6-8 weeks ago, but never could locate any cyans. A little bird gave me a hint, and I was able to locate a small patch of Cyans. All I need now is an azzy print and I’ll be set (for now) to start my project with Allenii, Azzies, and Cyans.

Im speechless. The mushrooms gods have blessed me. Found 2 more patches today in Concord.

I think its possible theres some cyanescense mixed in? Let me know if you see any. Have not found that species yet.

Also got some HUGE Allenii today. 3+ inches maybe even 4+

its possible there could be cyans. hard to tell from those photos. I only see allenii. Fully mature allenii can also push their cap edges up a bit wavy like those chunky big ones you found

I went back to the spot I was at yesterday, did a more thorough check, seemed like they were all over the place. Slightly better haul than yesterday



Also saw this, looks like the tree trunk is about to swallow that baby amanita whole

This is a great year for hunting. Actives everywhere. I went back to my spot where I hunt allenii. I didn’t expect to find much, if anything, because by this time last year, most of the patches were covered up with leaves and/or there was just no activity because of the lack of rain. I brought home a major haul, and discovered a couple major patches fruiting in spots I had looked over several times last year and found nothing. The rain has really helped out a lot this year and is causing a lot of fruiting in places that aren’t ideal (or at least where I didn’t find them last year). I wish I had taken more pictures, but when I get in the zone, I lose sight of pretty much all but the hunt.

This is probably the biggest or one of the biggest allenii I’ve found. Especially for one that’s completely intact. It’s just over 3.5 inches wide. I also found several albino allenii that were deep up underneath some shrubs. I don’t know exactly what causes this, but they were right next to a huge flush of allenii and they had blue bruising on the stipe. Except for the bruising, the rest of the mushroom was very light, almost white. I’ll get some pics in a bit.

A lot of older Allenii will get that wavy look to them. I’m not an expert at telling them apart, but I’d say more than likely it’s all Allenii. Last year, I thought I had found cyans because I found some that looked like this, but when I asked for ID everyone said they were all allenii. I found some allenii this year that I thought might be ovoids, but alas, everyone ID’ed them as all allenii. Sometimes you find little pockets of mushrooms that have a little different look than what you’re used to, but they’re most likely all the same kind. I think there’s many different factors that can play into that like genetics, microclimate, etc.

Thats a good looking patch. This is my. first season hunting so im looking forward to finding good spots as the seasons come and go.

I went and buried some ugly alleni i found in spots with new mulch (as of this year) hoping to propagate some new patches close to home base.

Have 2 decent spots from this season to check next year. May get to go out a little more in the next week or so but i'm guessing this season is close to a wrap?

This season will probably go through January at a minimum. It’s my understanding that if conditions are right cyans fruit multiple times until we get some good freezing weather. I don’t think allenii are quite the same, but a lot of patches will probably have 2 good flushes since we’ve had a good amount of rain. I’d say keep looking any chance you get during January. We just
had two days below freezing, but a lot of patches are semi-protected by low ground cover plants. The next couple weeks look really good temperature wise. Hopefully there’s more rain than the forecast shows at the moment though. This is only my third year hunting, and only my second year finding actives. I too am taking any stem butts and rotten mushrooms and am planting them around my yard to start my cultivation project. All I need now are some azzy prints/fruits to get my project finalized. Maybe some of these lifetime hunters can weigh in on the season?

After searching hard the past few months in San Francisco and only finding two small patches, I came away to Carmel By The Sea to see in the new year with my family.

Right in front of the front door of our Airbnb was a cluster of nice big Allenii fruits



Note my mushroom hunting partner in the background (trying to train him to sniff out actives)

I have read that people have trained dogs to sniff out chanterelles and other edibles. An update would be cool at some point on this.
