Went out to check on some of my spots, but of course kept tripping over new ones!  All from SF.

some pins that I left behind:

And then there was this...

So, things are definitely not done out there

nice finds. good time to get out there and clean up.

went to harvest a last patch yesterday. This patch had started pinning well before christmas, and I found it as medium sized pins the day before christmas. Some pins kept pushing up the last days of the big rains before the new year. They still could have grown more but i gotta leave town so i grabbed them

a lot of the pins and fruits out there now started pushing up in the last week of december, and cyans can grow pretty slow, so now is a good time to go check. If the cloud cover and humidity keeps up, might keep growing a bit longer

I can't believe how awesome and long this season proves itself to be... especially the Bay and Sacramento area!

Nice finds everyone! Im loving the Cyan pics

Went to check some Allenii pins i found about a week or two ago this evening after dark and noticed there is a light shining on the patch all night. (It is near a doorway)

All on one side of the walking path were dried out and about 1 inch or less in diameter. This side was directly under the lights.

Had a few on the other side of the concrete path that grew to a good size, somewhat further from the lights.

Do you think the lights are causing this? I am not sure how lights impact fungi but was thinking there could be less irrigation or something on that side as well.

beautiful pic Alan, as usual.  I should probably try to get better at photography, but it really isn't in my wheelhouse.

How many flushes did you collect from this area and was there always a significant difference in size?

I was there a couple weeks ago and picked some that were 1-2'.

At that time i saw the pins coming up and then last night they were dried out and didnt grow much over the previous week or two.

Maybe not enough water and or time? I harvested because i saw some opinions saying if they're dry you may as well pick. Maybe thats not the case and i should have waited longer?

We had good rains for a few weeks prior to cleaning the patch up last time and not much since as well...

I think they got dry and gave it up.  The ones I'm finding that are still going strong are in deep grasses which keep in the moisture.

Good pointer there. Yeah i think you are right. This spot is in concord too and definitley a different enviroment than ive been finding them in, in oakland and berkeley.

Not much cover or foliage so i bet thats safe to assume.

Thanks!

You don’t here concord that much around here but I in fact found some out there this year as well. I’ve learned you don’t always have to travel very far to popular areas to find actives.

Concord, pleasant hill, Walnut Creek, Danville, Alamo, Pittsburgh, and  Antioch have all showed me some at one time or another.

Surprisingly haven’t add Martinez to that list but I know they are out there.

Good luck

I’m no expert, but from my observation the last two years with allenii, once they start drying out they stall and don’t continue to grow. Since conditions just aren’t optimal, it seems because  the downward spiral has already begun, it  simply continues regardless of conditions. To really prove this though I’d have to be examining the fruits every day to determine that.  I hope to have more definite observations once I get some cultivated spots going that aren’t an hour away from my house.

Martinez is home base for me.... Ive checked countless spots on google earth but it seems the wood chips are lacking in the area.
(from what i see residential might be the best places to look)

Attempted to cultivate a few patches scattering allenii around. We shall see in future seasons.

@Dandurn that is what i recalled so i appreciate the advice on that matter.

Hope everyone has a great day and are blessed in their foraging.

My outing yesterday did yield some fruits, but my spots are drying out fast and I made the decision to pull the trigger on some of the smaller ones that seemed stunted.

I suspect we'll need another big rain to keep this season rolling, and there's nothing in the forecast.

Good to know. I think i may go check my known spots this weekend and then head to golden gate park....

Heading to Oakland after work to check a cyan patch. Will update this evening.

Would like to score on some more cyans, then hang my hat until more rain.

I too went out and cleaned up my spots. Seems to me the season is basically over.  Lots of drying and dead pins, no new fruits, and no rain for the foreseeable future.
That said, it was the best season I personally had in several years. wound up with close to a half pound of dried fruits.  No complaints at all.

Same here, very big yield considering I didn't expect to find any.  I'm just wondering...isn't it possible that we could still see another flush if the rains come back and the temps stay low?  Am I dreaming...

I don't think so, and if I had to put $ on it I'd say no. I'd love to be wrong though lol.

Not to say some fruits won't still be found out there, but I feel the season for actives will def be slowing down from here on out.

I imagine ovoids will be popping up a lot more this time around than previous years though, with all the proper soaking rains we've had across the state...I've never found ovoids but I recall looking on mushroomobserver last year, and IIRC most of them were found around late Feb to early April.

I know some ovoids were found & posted in this thread early in the season...I've heard that ovoids can, or tend to, fruit during both the fall and the spring.

I didn't do much of any hunting this year...Just didn't have the motivation/energy to get out there and also had a lot of trimming going on for a chunk of the active season, and kinda tired of being in/around urban areas in general. I checked on a few spots I know of and didn't see anything (perhaps wrong timing), but I did come across one new healthy looking patch that was close to another one I've know about. It was satisfying getting to pick a little something though. I collected somewhere around 1.5 ounces dry, which is about the minimum I like to have on hand to last me through the year (tho I didn't work with mushrooms/psychedelics much at all last year).

On NYE I went to a show/party in SF...On my way out there I stopped by a patch I know of in the east bay hoping to collect a bunch of fresh mushrooms so I could give them out to people through the night (and nom' on em' myself lol), pretty much the entire patch was already rotted but there was one little cluster of 3 or 4 fresh/healthy looking mushrooms. I collected em' and ate them a couple hours later, so it was nice to also eat some freshly picked mushrooms this year. Eating them fresh is my favorite and I haven't got to do so for several years now.
