help with id. sf bay area
    #2537694 - 04/08/04 01:59 AM (14 years, 19 days ago)

found these guys on a sunny, fertalized lawn in menlo park. no bruising apparent after 12 hours of being squeezed, somewhat nutty, shroomy smell. caps golden to light yellow. gills not attached to stem. spores were either black or a very dark purple. matured mushroom found next to this specimen had a completely planar cap. hollow stems. largest cap measured about 3 inches across. 65 degrees today was the high.

Seems to me like you may have found yourself a cubensis, althought im not even 90% considering im an intermediate hunter... best go searching some pictorials online about cubensis, theres alot of strains out there, and thats looking pretty cubensis like... anyways good luck, and remember, if your not at least 95% sure, kick it dont pick it.

dude, the fact that he said it was found on a "fertilized lawn" should instantly tell you that it's NOT a cubensis... please don't put suggestions like that into beginner mushroom hunters heads, for all you know it might be poisonous, and thinking its a cubensis he'll eat it and become ill.

bathrobe - im not sure what your mushroom is, the photos are a little blurry but hopefully someone here can help you wiht your ID

My first thought is that those look close to Psathyrella velutina. Of course, the photos are pertty fuzzy, so it's hard to tell.

Happy mushrooming!

Those are DEFINATELY not cubensis. Please do not *ever* suggest an ID if you're not sure.

I'd have to agree with ToxicMan on Psathyrella velutina. I've found many of these in my day and those fit the description perfectly. They're not active and not poisonous. Probably not worth eating either. I'd say toss them.

Here's a post I made back in the day to help people ID this mushroom: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Forum3&Number=1577376&fpart=&PHPSESSID=

I hear those wild san fran cubensis are pretty potent...lol just kidding. Just to let you know you will not find any wild cubensis in the states unless you are down around the gulf coast area. there is lots of information on this site you can read to increase your mushroom identifying skills. I learned a lot from this site! I recomend you buy an identification guide and review it!!!
