I just dump  Boiling water over the Coco coir and gypsum in a big cooler until it hits field capacity. Once it cools its ready to use. 

For a casing layer you just cover the grains with a half inch of the coir, it's super easy, and colonizes quickly

You can build a huge SAB from polycarbonate sheets.  You just tape the seams and it's strong enough to support itself along with tape.  You need really strong tape.    Your better off building a really big one so you don't need to keep graduating to a bigger one as your needs change.


Nice to have a small one just for agar in my experience. Big one for 5 lb spawn bags.

I have had great success with a large still air box with agar. It’s really easy. Agar is one of the most fun and simple parts of this hobby

Its worked for me more than once. At one point in time spores straight to LC was considered a standard and acceptable practice. But you always wanna over shoot your grain production because not all of it is gonna make it...

Is spores to LC optimal? No....

Does it work....

This is is a little reassuring. I was thinking the same. I’m still debating on using the LC I have incubating or order more spores and go to agar then LC. That’s going to put me a month behind schedule through. I’ll post an updated pic of the jars later today.

Can always drop some of your LC on agar. Make some transfers in hopes to get a clean culture then can take that to LC if you want. Or go straight to grain and expand anything that looks good.

So many roads you can take.

I find trial and error to be the best teacher.

Yeah, put the LC you already made to agar. Don't think about your schedule, which sounds like a schedule you shouldn't have made. Also, fucking up 100lbs of grain will be far worse for the schedule lol

Yea I was confused why everyone is saying not to incubate LC at this temperature. Im only following the instructions that came with the jar.

UPDATE: DAY 6 AFTER INOCULATION



My only concerning thing that I notice is in the last two pictures of the jars prior to mixing, there’s a couple spots growing directly on the side of the jar. Is this mycelium or is it something else?

Yea that’s what I will do, I’m just investing everything in to substrate right now to produce as much as possible. After I reinvest the first harvest i will buy a couple large laminar flow hoods so I can have a long work area to work with lots of bags in a sterile environment. It should be a lot quicker because I actually ended up with twice as much bins and substrate, the order took long to arrive so they sent a replacement… both orders ended up arriving, lucky me. :grin:

I will test the temperature differences. I’m going to put this LC on agar and then put the agar in new LC. I’ll do 2 jars, one jar will incubate at 72 degrees, and the other will incubate at 82. I’ll post progress comparing the two.

How are you even keeping it at 82, have you fashioned some type of heated incubator?

Yea it’s actually super simple and cheap. Surprisingly it works perfectly! I can post pics of that today. But basically you just get 2 27 gallon black heavy duty tubs, fill one with a few gallons of water. Then I got a 200 watt aquarium heater from Walmart and put it in the water set to 82 degrees, then put the second bin inside the first one so it’s floating on the water. It takes a about an hour to stabilize its temperature, works perfect for me. I got one of those 2 piece thermometers for 12 bucks at Walmart too, so I can keep the sensor inside the second tub so I can have an accurate read of the temperature inside!

That's called a TIT incubator or Tub In Tub incubator.  I made one of them over a decade ago when i first started growing becuase all the info back then said to keep grain in the dark @ 85-86°F.... my spawn production got way better when i stopped using an incubator.

Anyone who has been growing long enough knows what a TIT is and or has built one.

You dont need it. But you grow how you wanna grow.

Yea I’m starting to lean towards your preference. Especially if incubating at 80-85 degrees is outdated. It’s much easier and space efficient to just keep a small room at a constant 72 degrees with a simple space heater. That’s what I will do for the spawn bags, I can just put them on shelves so they’re not touching.(I heard if they’re touching then they can reach dangerous temperatures)

It looks like you've done some research. Unfortunately, a lot of that info is outdated or debunked. You've came to the right place to learn. I probably wouldn't have continued cultivating if I didn't find my way here. Check out this link. That's the thread that helped me get started.

There's plenty of other great methods (teks) written by other amazing cultivators that are just as good and possibly better for your current situation but that's a good one stop place to gather a basic understanding.

I went ahead and knocked up 3 spawn bags to see if this LC is any good. 2 of the bags are showing small signs of growth. The third bag I trashed. I'm just trying to decide if the bag came already contaminated, if the LC is contaminated. I guess we will see in a couple of days. I'm going to put some of the same LC on agar plates tomorrow.

All three of those bags have green mold from the looks of things. 

I'd just go straight to agar with some fresh spores tbh man.  It's gunna be a headache getting any clean growth from that LC.

It's totally doable, but it would be a hassle. 

The mold definitely came from the LC, I'm only assuming because your other fresh unused bags don't have any mold in them right?

No brother, those are 3 pics of the same bag. The other two bags are still colonizing, no signs of green mold In those, there's actually signs of some ropey mycelium growth. I will go check again in a few hours. But yea, I shot up 3 bags with the LC, the green one was showing white fuzz the second day after inoculation, which leads me to believe the bag itself may have came contaminated and only started showing it after the temps were raised.
