Personally I’m not attracted to punch tools at all but for those lacking in precise hand movements I can see it may be handy. Shaky hand days can be a real bummer, sobriety seems to help a lot tho ime.


I made a home-brew punch. It has a plunger in it in case the plug gets stuck inside the stainless tube but that only happens 1 out of 20 times. I hold the plate at a steep angle (nearly 90 degrees) and then punch. That way nothing is over the plate. Then I set the punch down and while keeping the plate at a steep angle, grab my knife and pull the plug out then put it onto the receiving plate.

The only reason I like using a punch is that it helps you see if the mycelium grows evenly and helps you see real sectors better.

Seems like extra work to me just to not use a scalpel. I also dont need to sterilze my scalpel before use. Iso the handle and fresh blades are sterile.

Call me lazy, i guess. :shrug:

As for a punch and the technique I mentioned above - it’s definitely not fast. If someone were doing 30+ transfers in a sitting I could see what a pain it would be but for a dozen or so it’s fine. To me, the growth pattern and consistency in comparison between plates that using plugs provides is worth it.

My 12 gauge all ss. 5 inch needle punch with ramrod keep my hand high enough from the dish to not be a factor.

I clone allot of outdoor grows. The outdoor grow produce very large fruit for me, but I end up with allot of mold and bacteria.

My needle punch does wonders.

Here some pics. that will show just how much better the needle extraction tool out performs a scalpel.

This Is the only time I'll use a punch tool. Other than that nothing out performs better than the scalpel. (in my opinion).

I would opt out of the towel and just use the lid personally. But -- if you do decide to keep the towel, I expect it to be white shortly :wink:. I would also expand your floor -- you'll want more floor.

I always felt like the clean towel misted with ISO and soapy water reduced drafts under the lid and adds a damp porous surface for airborne contams to settle and get trapped in. I have more bakers rack I use as the floor when working with a fuller box.

Anyone try one of those cheaper bacti-cinerators on eBay? Going for $150 USD vs $300+ for the real deal.

Obviously more cheaply made, but would it get the job done?

I have one from aliexpress i got for 130usd with shipping.
Its works perfect. I checked it now and was like 160usd.

I made my sab as tall as possible by getting a nice tall tote for inoculating jars w wedges, didn’t like having to be extra careful to not hit the top of the tub
