From yesterday:

Hericium coralloides

Hericium americanum

A few G. luteus with the haul

And the resulting hericium “crabcakes”

Beautiful Hericium species! In this part of the world they're quite rare so I never harvest them for culinary purposes. I only take a small piece to get them in culture, trying to disturb the fruitbody as little as possible. But I heard in other parts of the world they can be more common.

That’s a bummer to hear poison drink. Do you grow them out to eat?

Here in the northeast us, they are real common this time of year if you know where to look, especially H.americanum.  Just about every hiking area around me has them to some degree though they can be difficult to spot sometimes. As with most edibles, I usually leave behind far more than I take and often only pick one or two from each fruiting in an attempt to lessen my own impact. I don’t even mess with the ones higher up.

I do try to grow them out. I wasn't very succesful with the wild clones yet though. It was too warm for the H. coralloides to fruit during summer, so I decided to inoculate some logs in a nearby forest instead in an attempt to propagate the species. The H. cirrhatum clones are painfully slow but do fruit in warm temperatures.

They're obviously a lot more common in your part of the world, so I don't see a problem in harvesting for culinary purposes. Those 'crabcakes' look delicious, btw!

Great find! Awesome that both sp. will often fruit in the same place for several years. Talk about finding a happy place!

I’ve been noticing that hericium seem to like to keep good company for whatever reason. Earlier this season I found a patch of H. americanum sharing the same log as P. Caerulipes. Then a few days ago, H. coralloides (shitty photo but top right tree)with some G. Luteus (center left tree)

Yeah, this is my third year in a row finding both at the same time in this spot.
It's extra unique because the maitake is growing from a beech tree not an oak.
