Hypholoma fasciculare and Psilocybe cubensis?
    #4339038 -

I found some mushrooms growing in my garden- I've never picked any before myself but I have done some research on the net to find out exactly what they are. I have narrowed it down to either Hypholoma fasciculare or Psilocybe cubensis.
Unfortunately that's bad because as you probably know one is poisonous and one aint. I was just wondering how you tell the difference between the two types. I'm not going to eat them until I know exactly what they are coz I'm very inexperienced. I'll see if I can get a picture of the mushroom and the spore print soon to see if any of you can help.
(PS Were found in the UK)

Cheers

Well its not cubensis, they grow in cow patties not in gardens, and I dont think they would grow wild in the UK.

its "possible" for cubes to grow in fertilizer in a garden but highly unlikely , what is likely tho is for another to tell you just like me , to give a WAY better description and post good pictures , read the forum rules before requesting an id
PS- cubes grow in the UK i do believe ..

The two species are not alike in many aspects. At certain stages of growth or fruit body condition (age), they may look slightly similiar. My guess would be that you don't have cubes and possibly a totally different species besides Hypholoma fasciculare.

Ways to tell them apart:
An example, cubes fruit from cow dung, while the sulfur tufts are usually found growing on or near decaying wood.

Veil is another characteristic that separates the two.. cubes have a membranous veil, which leaves a annulus(ring) on the stem. It usually will appear to be purple from spores falling on to it.

Hypholoma fasciculare tends to fruit in dense clusters. I often find them in a woods environment.

Note the clusters:

Here is some more info on sulfur tufts:

Highly doubt you have P.Cubensis. To the best of my knowledge they only grow in tropical and sub-tropical climates (wild that is). UK is not going to qualify I'm afraid. It would have to bruise blue and unless you found it on cow manure I would leave it alone....but that is obsolete considering I'm 99% certain P.Cubensis does not grow wild in the UK. Cheers.

I doubt you have either species mentioned. As the others have noted a garden is not the right habitat for Psilocybe cubensis or Hypholoma fasciculare. The former grows from dung, and the latter grows from wood. I suspect that you have found some species of Stropharia.
