Identifying this LBM, possibly a psilocybe I found near a marshy creek, first time poster please be nice
    #27216017 -

Habitat:
Found It near a marshy creek surrounded by dead grass. They all seemed to be growing out of old moist wood/sticks, there is also a cow pasture somewhat nearby. This was when I was visiting central coast CA, pretty close to the coast

Gills:
Lighter brown but turned almost black when dried, not attached, I think? sorry I'm new to this lol

Stem:
Length, diameter, color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc.

Cap:
Caps were about a centimeter wide give or take, nutty brown and lighter tan, and smooth and not slimey or sticky, bell shaped but with no nipple, also turns dark purple/black when dry

Spore print color:
Almost black

Bruising:
stock bruises brown as well as the white mycelium. The caps didn't seem to bruise initially but as stated above turned purple/black upon aging

I hope you guys can help, I've been looking in all the books I have and can't seem to find this thing so I figured I'd come to the best!

Possibly Psathyrella or something closely related.

It would help if you could post larger and more detailed pictures, though.

Welcome to the Shroomery.

Also the dried caps have a similar distinct scent to cubies, altho me being new to this I'm not entirely sure what that scent signifies and it's impossible to describe. I will say none of my other mushrooms finds seem to have this scent tho. side note, I sure do love the scent of candy caps

Oh I know it's not a cubie but it has an extremely similar smell to them. Not sure what this smell means if anything but none of the other mushrooms I have found so far (mostly hardwood forest types) have had this scent to them. It's almost like a fruity pungent smell? Impossible to describe lol

By the looks, possibly Parasola conopilea or one of the other similar looking species in the Psathyrella associated genera.

Just a quick tip for migrating photos from phone to PC: if you're emailing and downloading or something similar, you often have an option to choose the size and resolution. If they showed up more blurry or smaller after migration, try again and look for an "actual size" option or something similar to make sure they retain their original quality. These settings can hide from you sometimes.. Cheers and welcome. New here as well.

Thanks for the advice! I'll be honest in an excited hurry to find out what this mushroom was I just posted them to my friends discord and dragged them onto my PC. Lesson learned I will be much more diligent from now on

Unfortunately your mushroom is inactive.

It is Psathyrella atrospora, or possibly Parasola conopilea.

Disregard "similar scent method" to ID mushrooms until you at least start recognizing most common genera of fungi.
Psathyrella is far away from cubes, and that "kind of similar" scent means nothing.

Peace 🕊️

Michael Kuo states that a good way to separate the two, is that the former grows in dense clusters while the latter usually doesn't.

Apart from that, I wouldn't be able to separate the two from pictures.

Yes, you are right. Actually I was aware of that, because I read byrain comment on the two species involved on MO:

According to Smith (I have no idea who is Smith), P. conopilus doesn’t form dense cespitose clusters like this and also he didn’t record it from CA, only east. P. atrospora however is a very common species this time of year in CA which was also described from here and is clearly different from European P. conopilus observations (See Zaca’s observations).
https://mushroomobserver.org/192332?q=1d0EU

Maybe big shot pictures would help to see how dense the cluster is, or even is there any cluster at all.

I decided for Atrospora (55%), just because byrain comment state it was described from CA and it is very common there. Sure, no way to tell them apart besides the cluster method.

I can try to get back and take a few zoomed out pictures but from what I observed they grew fairly spread out, like a foot or 2 aside from a few that had 2 or 3 offshoots

Also thank you all for your help, you have given me an interesting direction to continue researching mushrooms and a lot more to read
