Pictures of Psilocybe fasciata/venenata * 1

Here are some interesting pictures i have found on japanese websites under the tag "aisenbon take" wich is the japanese name for Psilocybe fasciata.

In "Psilocybin mushrooms of the world" Stamets wrote that Psilocybe venenata is synonymous with P. fasciata. However i find that the mushrooms on those pictures looks macroscopicaly very different from the venenata grown by Workman ...but what do i know  :justdontknow:

This pretty timely.  I am looking into these species right now.  But from what I can tell there some confusion between Psilocybe venenata and Psilocybe subaeruginascens.  The pictures posted as P. vevenata appear to be Guzman's concept of P. subaeruginascens which is likely the same as P. septrionalis.  I need to consult my notes but I'll get back to this thread.

Pretty confusing, yes.

This one was labeled as P.argentipes but obviously those aren't argentipes...

Hmmm, well the figures that show the cheilocystia are a bit off when compared to the figures in Guzman.  The mushrooms themselves are very variable in appearance so its hard to pin this down.  The microscopic features of the mushrooms in my gallery are closer to Guzman's description for venenata than what is in those figures.  It may have been a mistake to make fasciata conspecific with venenata.  I'll keep digging.  What is the URL for those figures?

OK, here is a good indication of the quality of the information on this site.

"Psilocybe" cyanescens


This is not Psilocybe cyanescens but in fact Panaeolus cyanescens.  So it looks like the collections are real collections with accurate measurements and figures, but the names attributed to them are not accurate.

Some of these collections could be unrecognized new species, especially since they range outside of Japan.  I'll try to match up the descriptions the best I can with known species.
