Helping those less able to defend

When does one step in and when does one merely spectate?

Jump in if you believe you can help, then do something constructive!

Spectate if it's beyond your abilities, or if it's not something you agree with anyway.

To use a political analogy; some thought the bringing-to-light of prisoner abuse was constructive; others did not. I don't think things should be hidden in dark corners.

The Truth shall set you free!

I don't think there is any easy way to bring such a negative situation to light in a positive or constructive manner.

so we just forget about it then???

great point swami...when DO you step in

it depends on the situation...

for instance..if my friend is getting attacked by someone with a knife...I'm going to try my best to help him so he doesn't get hurt.

to me, violence is never an answer that will fully alleviate a problem, but then again, what about my friend being attacked with a knife? in that case I would use force to help my friend...so i guess then what matters is the intent.

when you do step in...what intent could be had in order for it to be "justifiable?"

--------------------
Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

I step in when someone is being physically attacked by another and I do not think the the victim can defend himself/herself. I would naturally not do so when the situation would be suicide or I do not think I would be able to help and hence my action would result in no positive outcome for the victim as well as resulting in a negative outcome for myself.

If two assholes want to pummel each other, I will spectate.

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

it depends what danger i could get myself in to. If the odds are overwhelming and i could be seriously hurt i would probably pass no matter the circumstance. (family excluded)

I personally would lay down my life if needed, so that another may live.

there are no easy to memorize, hard and fast rules for dealing with a situation ike that.  Its a matter of free will, good judgement, and the dreaded taking responsibility for one's actions.

sucks, dont it?

yeah right. You think you would but i doubt you have ever been in a situation like that. Survival instinct and self preservation is an awesome force, not easily cast aside.

"yeah right. You think you would but i doubt you have ever been in a situation like that. Survival instinct and self preservation is an awesome force, not easily cast aside. "

I have put myself in many situations for the sake of others where I could have easily lost my life.It was a risk I was willing to take to help others out.I have had to fight people armed with knives and various weapons(pipes, chains, bats,as well as large sticks, etc) to protect others and I've also had to fight multiple attackers to protect others and numerous other situations. Then again I do not fear my fellow human being. And I also have 11 years of full contact tae kwon do under my belt.

I have put my life on the line many times. And I will continue to do so.I do not fear death.I have had many near death experiences over my lifetime (most because of other's sick sense of humor and their cruelty)

Swami writes:

Is this just for one person helping out one other person? Are we to keep societies and countries out of the picture while answering this question?

One steps in when they feel like and/or think like they should.
